Hi Marlene. I noticed during the video that you had your focus lever set to AFS/AFF, which in turn gave you the ability to choose between the two from the quick menu while in Program or iA modes. I found that if you choose AFC or MF on the lever, both of those focusing methods are also available in the Program mode (and iA, A, S, M, etc). The difference is that if you choose AFC or MF, when you go into the quick menu, there is no option to change - because the choice was already made by putting the lever to either AFC or MF in the first place. With both AFS/AFF and AFC, in Program mode, you can then adjust the AF mode in quick menu and choose face/eye/body, custom multi, etc. Adjusting the AF mode is not available as an option in quick menu using iA. Thanks so much for your tutorials! I've been learning a ton about my shiny new G9 from your videos.

Ah yes that's a bit confusing and I should have gone deeper into that! In the iA modes if you press the Fn1 button you get the two choices of focus modes - tracking and face/eye/animal detection. Same for AFS/AFF and AFC. You can see the small symbol on the top row on the LCD. If you are in P, S, A, M mode, and press the Fn1 button, you get the full range of focus modes. Thanks for bringing this up! I'll do better next time. Cheers!!

@@ImageMaven From this reply, I just learned something new! I didn't realize pressing fn1 in iA mode would bring up the choice of AF mode. I thought that since it didn't appear as a choice in the quick menu, it couldn't be changed. Thanks!

Same two bodies and lenses here, except your 17mm is my 20mm. - Our summer in NZ is coming to an end while you look forward to warmer and longer days. Just as you guys, we are also in isolation. We may see some light at the end of the tunnel in one or two week's time. - I really enjoy your instructive videos. Your subjects and interests are so varied that everybody can learn something from all of them. - I like the way you use a pencil to point things out in screen menus... so much easier to follow your style, rather than follow someone's thick finger.

I'm happy you can see the light at the end of the tunnel. We are definitely still in the tunnel in Calgary. Canada is huge so there are hot spots still dealing with a very serious situation. Glad you like the pencil pointer! It also saves me from displaying my beat up hands too much. That is the 15mm f/1.7 (you probably made a typo). I love, love this lens. So sharp. It's my only prime lens. I had a tough decision when deciding between the 15mm and the 20mm. How do you like the 20mm? Thank you for stopping by. Take care. I hope you have a safe and healthy transition out of full isolation mode.

Hi Marlene I recently took the plunge and purchased a used G9 plus a new lumix lens 100-400. All very new after having a bridge camera, a friend introduced me to your you tube site and I am finding your tutorials so good. Just found today I can convert to a digital zoom x4 in P mode which is very exciting for bird photography. Great way to learn watching a tutorial then playing - thank you
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 2 жыл бұрын
Wonderful to hear this, Karen. I do suggest though, that you do some tests with that 4X digital zoom. Compare that digital zoom, with taking a shot at 400mm and cropping on the computer. You should use a tripod for this test and shoot the same subject with both settings. While you're at it, try the 2x as well. And maybe try at different focal lengths 100- 200- 300- 400mm. Also when handholding make sure you are using a very fast shutter speed with that 100-400mm lens. You should try for 1/1000s or you may get motion blur, which can sometimes be mistaken for out of focus photos. This will be even more noticeable when using the digital zoom. Hopefully you've seen some of my birding videos for more tips. Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment. Welcome to the community.

All is relatively well where I am in Florida, although businesses are suffering down here. Luckily, I can work remotely, although I have to go to the office once in a while just so I don't go crazy. I hope we can all get through this Covid mess we're in soon. I can't wait to get out and about to shoot more. My local park is getting a bit boring subject-wise. Maybe the arrival of spring weather will help! The G-9ers have been very loyal to me over the past couple of years and I so do appreciate that. It makes me want to help them out even more. Howdy Marlene! I recently picked up a GX85 because I wanted to get back into photography after more than a decade of being a camera phone shooter. In the early 2000's I worked in a photo studio, took a lot of classes and even did a fair amount of business on the side (portraits and events mostly) but then I got serious about web development as a career and kinda let photography fall by the wayside. Now I'm coming back to it and boy has camera technology changed in the last 10-15 years. Really enjoying your videos to understand some of the features available on my kit and get out there taking better pictures with more confidence in my understanding of the tools. Thank you!

When I do KZbin videos, I don't have to do marketing. I just get in front of the camera and teach. If people watch, I'm happy about it. Thanks Marlene; as always, informative and easy to follow. I'm still looking forward to using iA+, with RAW, as I can go walking and do relatively quick snaps. Unlike you, we're having a hot Autumn and it's too hot to go out walking in the day. I'm thinking I'd prefer using Manual as against the 'P' mode as it offers all advantages of the G9; so for tripod work it's the Manual mode and for 'fast' work the iA+. Thanks again for thinking of the 'G Niners' in these times. Our Prime Minister is indicating we're on the 'road out' regarding Covid-19, so perhaps soon a new normality will emerge. Mike in Oz

Hey Marlene, came across your tutorials just a few days ago and wanted to say a big thanks! Watched several now. We got a GX9* about 3 weeks ago and are just dipping our toes. My partner found this Program Mode tutorial really useful as she pleased that the new IA+ is more tweak-able than the IA she's used to on her old P&S FX37 (still love it!), but wants to have more choice than the Photo Styles IA+ offers on the GX9. She feels vindicated by your suggestion of going from IA+ to P only once she's comfortable! Useful to discover that the Styles themselves can be tweaked. So the tweaks overwrites the current Style, huh,( until you reset to default)? (OK I'll try it!) Will leave specific comments and thanks on the other vids! Still locked down in Scotland! PS. I'm only writing this as my partner insists maintaining a zer0 web presence! *btw, Good to see that so much of the menus on the G9 are applicable to the somewhat simpler GX9.

Thanks Marlene. Very helpful info as always! To answer your weather question, I'm in Central Texas and we keep getting cool fronts (40's - 50's F) interrupting our warm, muggy Springtime weather (80's F). So, P Mode chooses Aperture and Shutter automatically, right? Generally speaking when might a photographer want to choose this mode? Can you think of any situations when it would be useful? I know that "it all depends" on a lot of things, but I'm just trying to get a basic feel for why it is on the camera in the first place. Hope you are yours are well and staying safe!
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, P Mode chooses Shutter and Aperture for you. Why use it? I think if people don't understand Shutter or Aperture Priority, or can't decide if f/stop or shutter speed are important in the moment, they could use Program Mode. I never use it myself, but people wanted to know the difference between P and iA. In Program Mode you basically make all of the ISO, WB and other set up choices (as you do with S, A and M), but you let the camera choose the exposure. Having said that, I do sometimes shoot in P Mode for Video when I'm in a quickly unfolding situation. (Shh, Don't tell anyone.) And some cameras default to P Mode for video automatically, so it's good to know about it. And I think P Mode helps people who are learning, to understand their cameras better if they know what each mode is best for. We finally have some great weather here in Calgary. Hit nearly 70F yesterday and today. We're loving it! Snow is finally gone too. Prepping the veggie patch for seeding soon! So far so safe on my end. Hope the same for you and your circle. Hi Marlene, I fly large scale drones. I use the Panasonic GH4 and love this camera. My go to settings is manual mode for video, set to infinity, and program mode for pictures. Do you think this is the best settings for a camera that is moving through the air? The camera is attached to a gimbal stabilizer. I'm also using the Lumix 12-35 mm lens.Thank you for your excellent take on Panasonic cameras. David.
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 4 жыл бұрын
Hi David, I don't have any experience with Gimbals but is sounds like you have things well in hand. By Manual Mode for video I take it you're referring to manual focus, you didn't say what exposure mode you're using for video. As for Still Pictures, the exposure should be the same whether you're shooting photos or videos. The light doesn't change. The only thing I'd worry about is that you have a fast enough shutter speed to freeze the motion of your photos when flying fast. But if you're far from your subject, and using that 12-35mm lens, that wouldn't be as noticeable as when you're close. Not sure I added to your knowledge, but great to have you stop by to chat. Hei Marlene, thank you very much for all the well made tutorials. I just got a GX9 and your videos help a lot because not even the long manual explains everything in detail. There is one thing I can't figure out right now. Is there any setting that activates Face Detection AF in other focus settings like "Single Point AF" or "229 Focus Points"? It may sound weird but I'm used to Fuji cameras where I always used single point AF but as soon as there was a face in the frame the camera said "ok, let's forget single point for now and instead focus on the face via face detection." This way I never had to change focus settings. Do I always need to change between focus settings when I want to shoot a portrait in Program Mode on a Lumix?
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Panda, No, but it sounds really nice! It's slightly different on Lumix. With my G9 if you set it on Face Detection, and no faces/bodies are detected, it defaults to 225 area (but double check that for the GX9) But I typically just use AFS with Custom Multi focus on the default settings and either touch the LCD where I want it to focus or half press the shutter button and it usually gets me where I want to be 95% of the time - especially for stationary objects. And even with my skateboarding shots I tend to use it that way. I would say practice a bit and get to know the focus stuff with your new camera. Everyone kind of works out their own way of doing things. FYI you should download the online PDF extended manual for your camera. It has all the possible combinations of focus settings. Thanks for your question and enjoy your new camera!

@@ImageMaven Thanks for the reply! I went trough all the settings and didn't find what I was looking for but I wasn't sure whether I overlooked something. The sheer amount of settings this camera has is crazy (in a good way). At least now I know that it simply works differently on Lumix cameras. Yes, the Face Detection mode uses 225 Points when not recognizing a face. But when you tap on the screen it temporarily changes to Single Point AF. So to me it looks like an odd hybrid of AF settings. I'll play around with the different modes to see what works best for me. So far I like the Lumix a lot. Thanks again for making all these great videos. You explain everything so well. And I think your combination of photography and skating is very interesting and cool.

@@OoviokuoO I agree that all the possible settings are overwhelming. Gives me lots of video topics though. What I try to do when learning a new camera (especially a new make of camera) is to go on a photo walk. Then play with a minimum amount of settings and test them out - whether that's focus or something else. I find if I change too many things I lose track of what I'm testing out. I definitely need to do more work with focus on moving subjects. There is so much more capability than I currently use. Glad you like my skater photos. I get a lot of chance to play and practice at the skatepark as I have a ton of friends willing to help me out. Have fun!

Not sure if it's exactly the same. But you can try using "Light Composition". It's a bit complicated to explain here but you can look that up in the PDF owner's manual. Page 241. Hope that helps. You can also do multi exposures. Page 202 of the manual.

@@ImageMaven thank you, I saw it's a function similar with what you can do in PS. Live composition is great (have it on my phone saw it on Olympus) you set your shutter to 20-30", and the camera will only catch the light from the thunderbolt without blowing your image of there are 3-4 consecutive lightings. I also found other way to catch the thunderbolt, I do some time elapse 1.6" shutter at each 2 seconds 200 images and you IF I get lucky I can catch some good images :).

Ah neat. You can also try 4k or 6K photo mode in Pre-Burst for lightning. That's what I do.

@@ImageMaven I was thinking of that, but using time lapse you put the camera on tripod, you pres once and then you waite and pray that you are lucky to get some good images from the 200 shoots that the camera is doing :). With 4k 6k you need to stay focus on the sky :), but i will also try that soon and let you know the results 🙏

@@CorneliuStefanEsanu Yes try it. I never had any focus issues as I am usually quite a distance from the storm.

Hi. When I half press the shutter button it takes the shot almost instantly. I've got it on AFS? Any advice?

Yes it's a light touch. You'll get used to that shutter button in a few days. Keep at it!
