Not every budgie is fully tame, even ones that are beloved pets, the fact that Pablo will sit on your chest is actually really good for a tiny shy bird like that.

Yes, I had untamed budgies and they would never ever go even close to me, getting them on my chest would be unthinkable. They would sit as far as way from me as possible. I'd say that Pablo has been tamed somewhat

Pablo definitely seems like a tame bird who was either just bonded to one person or hadn't been handled in a while. My tamest budgie is super cuddly and sweet with me (and a few select people) but if a stranger tried to pick him up, they'd get bit big time, if he didn't fly away first. My other budgie isn't hand tame in the slightest but she'll come up and talk to and take treats from just about anyone as long as they don't try to handle her. Budgies have super finicky personalities.

If I may, I think I know what's going on with that little budgie, see I work at a PetSmart, and we sell budgies and finches. So if any PetSmarts are like that in your area (assuming you have one around) that could be why that little fellow likes the finch, it's familiar to him. As for him being so timid, it could very well be possible that he got out of the box on the way home so he has not really been handled and tamed yet. You would not believe how many times a little kid has opened the box in the car or outside the store. My advice is, if the bird has a band on its leg, take him to a pet store and have them look up the numbers on the band, then if they sold him to the person that owns him, then they'd have that information on file, including the phone number and name of the adopter.

I work at PetSmart too, none - or at least most - of the parakeets don't have bands I'm pretty sure. The other birds do like the Canaries or Green Cheeks. It might be state thing though? I'm not sure.

@@thatwitchgirl It must be a state thing, cause all of the birds at the store I work at do, well, not sure about the Finches, but we don't sell Green Cheeks or Canaries (though you would NOT believe how many people come in asking for Canaries, or demanding we order some) One time a Dicks Sporting Goods not far from us found one of our birds in the tree and we returned it to the owner.

One thing I wish was widespread knowledge about birds is that they are smart. It baffles me how so many people think they are stupid animals. I took my conure out on a walk yesterday, and when people would stop me to ask questions about her, I'd have her do a few tricks. People were fascinated by even her most basic tricks of waving and spinning. One person even said they had no idea you could teach a bird anything. I think the overall welfare of parrots would increase if people saw them as the brilliant beings that they truly are and not just some loud cage ornament.

Yes! I get so many questions when my flock joins me on my dog walks. Some people have even been shocked by the fact that you can take a bird out of its cage and out to the town, or that you can form bonds with your parrot just like you can with a dog. At least those people take the initiative to ask and are open to be educated about parrots. :) And my Toos live for all that attention.

This is why I am so for cockatoos. Some find them the hardest but they are so personable. Look at jersey. She played hide and seek, soccer, and how much more. My macaws were always lumps on a stick. They were certainly affectionate one on one, but they never picked up on the Spontaneity , the fun of running around and doing silly things again like we see jersey do. Yea, give me a cockatoo any days of the week. They can be tough at times but wow are they so worth the time (not that any other birds aren’t, to each their own)

You mentioned how difficult it can be to get a bird to stop plucking, and sometimes they have a relapse if something stressful happens, but it seems like you are doing a great job in rehabilitating her. @@MARLENEMCCOHEN Hey, maybe you can help me with something. I lived in the Philippians for a years and a half when I was a kid. A restaurant we went to sometimes had a pet bird in the back. It was a local talking bird that me and my brother would play with. I've tried to find pictures of the kind of bird but can't. The closest I've come is the 'Common Hill Myna. He had a yellow stripe like those do, but he was otherwise pure black and... my brother says I'm wrong about this part, but I seem to remember him having a rainbow colored bulb between his beak and forehead, it looked like he was wearing a pearl or something. Do you know what kind of bird that was? Maybe a hybrid between different types of mynas?

you do a wonderful job teaching people about parrot care, it's not easy and its 24/7 job. but they are so lovable. I use to raise birds, then I find out how many of the poor babies get rehomed, I stopped breeding. I could not bring more birds in this world when there are so many that need good homes. I have been working and rehabbing birds for about 25 years. I have 7 birds and most came from multiple homes. so I know what you're saying, Marlene. I have yellow sided green cheek his owner has cancer, could no longer care for the little guy. He chases my husband around the house (he is a woman's bird) you have to understand the bird you adopt, Clippy is a Vinny, he loves going under my desk in a box, watch out if you get close to his box lol. My 7th birdie baby was in a shelter that was not licensed for birds, they were going to shut her down, she gave the birds away. Kiwi went to a lady that worked at the shelter, that home didn't work out, her elderly mother had him, (he attacked men) she didn't want him and I ended up with the little guy. I can turn him upsidedown, working on teaching him to raise his wings, so loving (if your a woman) were working on that.

Marlene thank you so much! Because of your videos I have adopted a budgie and I am trying to make his life the best it could be! Even if he will never want to hang out with me (outside of his home) I will try! Next year I'm going to volunteer at a pet shop that has an African grey which is in a very bad shape the bird has a small, Cage they're feeding him rabbit food and basically he is in rough shape and I really want to help them . So next year I'm going to volunteer at the shop to help with the bird, because I know that, with proper education, I can try to help him and I want him to have a better life. I already asked “is he adoptable” because he is in a pet shop, but they said no, because he is just for show so I'm going to try to volunteer and help the bird! ❤️ I just wanna say thank you because without you I would not know what anything about birds! And without you my budgie probably would be in a bad state, he would not have the cage that he has right now, he would have a bad diet and I just wanna say thank you so much!💕❤️

😂😂😂😂❤. Merlin, Merlin, Merlin. And I JUST CANT, Jersey I love you so much your the biggest ambassador for ALL cockatoos. Ok I have to tell you that Brando sounds exactly like you, seriously. How your voice goes high and that sweet talking you do. This species has a unique chirping and differant sound, like that little robot on STAR WARS that spins around making click and beeping whistling noise. As for rocky, well he IS AFTER ALL THE KING OF YOUR CASTLE, so makes apologies rather sits back and watches all his village nutcases make fools of themselves, all while one of his chosen " Cody" collects money to keep said CASTLE running smooth. He may call Jersey the village Clown, while Vinny is in charge of GUARDING the CASTLE, as well as open and taste test all that comes in, doing repairs when needed keeps him busy. Of coarse no CASTLE is complete without a 👸👑💋.

I love that you have vision and goals to help birds in the long term and setting up your brand to do that is wonderful. I've never felt irritated by your advertising, you do it in a way that's not obnoxious lol! I am one your viewers that live vicariously through you to get my bird love fix so I don't any need for products but I support your vision 100% I only realised just how wonderful parrots are through watching you and I so wish that I could have a bird of my own but with 3 cats and disabilities, it would be irresponsible to get one because besides having trouble with dealing with the upkeep and cleaning involved, my cats would definitely spend their life trying to get at it. I have a hard time stopping them getting the wild birds outside so I know they would try get at a pet bird. I would have to get a macaw for it to have any kind of safety around my cats and macaws aren't exactly starter birds or affordable in any sense!. I still hold the hope that someday I'll be able to get a bird tho!

OMGOSH BRANDO IS GOING TO TALK!!!! I just had to get that out lol. I love that you mention their calling for you is okay. I happen to have an IRN who chose to talk, so I trained him to talk to me as his call to come back, but his loudness wasn't unexpected. And in fact, the only loud call he does now is his warning call (he thinks the giant light posts above major city highways are hawks lol because the lights are in a fanned-out cross pattern) which is nice for people who bird-sit for me so I can teach them the difference instead of trying to teach them his difference screeches. My goal upon retirement is to buy some acreage and build giant aviaries on them, free from hawks and other predators. I plan to do this in Florida because that's where I'm from (currently moving around every three years since I'm in the Navy), but if there were others in other states, it would be nice to hook up with other sanctuaries across the USA so we could have somewhere to go in case of hurricane evacs. I'm hoping for central florida land, but panhandle land is usually the most widely available.. because it floods more up there. Sooo.. yes. Need a backup. I have a feeling that the next generation will be much more educated and helpful than ours because this seems like a new thing. Social media platforms like yours and BirdTricks have really helped to raise awareness in the last couple years. I'm not the biggest fan of being on electronics constantly (which is ironic, since that's what I do for my job), but I'm considering making at least an IG to add on to you guys and maybe start a KZbin channel if I get enough content/people/whatever on IG. We need more people who take action, not just people who sympathize, though we need plenty more of them as well. Retirement is in 12 years. I'll be saving and planning and gathering as much in the way of resources as possible during the next decade. And maybe will be able to put this dream into action by my 42nd birthday. :)

Just bought some of Marlene's Signature Blend for my two Budgies. I'm so happy you talked about budgies a little in this video. I have been working so hard to get my shy little budgies used to my fiance and I and while one is more brave than the other, one of them is pretty confident and steps up 8 times out of 10 when we get him. Also, our more shy budgie was also found outside and we could not find his home. So crazy how many of these little guys get lost and never found. I think it would be amazing to set up sanctuaries in your name that are publicly funded (as well as maybe funded by an attached bird store where you sell toys, food, supplies, cages, merch, etc.) and with the reach of your channel you can easily find people to work and volunteer in the sanctuaries who love and understand birds and set up a system that would be sustainable so that there is always someone to run the sanctuary and that person can choose another person to take over once they step down so that those birds will always have caretakers. I mean how amazing would it be to see Marlene Mc'Cohen Sanctuaries still making a difference 50 years from now?! That would be an amazing legacy to leave the birds and bird community. I for one have wanted to open an animal sanctuary for years and I would literally drop everything to go, move somewhere and help set up and run something like this (also I'm an artist so I could paint cool murals and signs and stuff!) and I know there are many others who would be more than happy to help you set up and run something like this. I think that you should start a go fund me where you figure out how much it would cost to start, including buying the property, building aviaries, getting supplies, doing repairs, etc. even if it's a lot of money (which of course it will be) I really believe that with all of our help you could totally do this and I'm sure there are companies and organizations out there that would be thrilled to become donors and help you as well!

A project that big you’re gonna need a lot of help and planning, and such, but you have one of the first sustainable sanctuary plans which the community has always talked about needing. We love hearing Somebirdie wants to do it one day! Our birds will outlive us! I think the idea is beautiful and so my offer stands to help if u need whenever is the time needed ok. But you know best what you can handle & when. I think I see your vision of growth over time, and wow what an inspiring goal! And watching you grow in your KZbin path has been really neat to see too! Very similar to our goal, but when I think about creating a sustainable rescue I then catch myself thinking “that’s lofty as an ideal goal... if you can do it.” So stay positive cuz you have a good team around you. A lot of loving friends and family who are well educated on bird issues. I always love that about your channel. We still need a team over here on mine, so we can’t crank out content like some of you can. Lol. But we’re doing good and the birds love it (it was all Tupeck’s idea too believe it or not! He had a whole business plan laid out and begged for 4 years. Lol) Btw our cockatoo is having her first gotcha day on 9/21 as a live Twitter event (& her 20th bday) so come by on that day and join in the festivities. My flock are all obviously big fans of yours. Time tba.
