Thanks, Marlene, for this video set on African Greys and parrots in general. The truth is these birds can be challenging on many levels and this lasts a lifetime, not a few years. This is important information and getting a bird is a complicated thing and not to be entered into lightly.

I was told my Timneh African grey had the IQ of a 5 year old human. My two sons had high IQ's so I thought I would be prepared. Wrong! My grey does full conversations with me. He likes to take things apart. His rope perches he unscrewed and I found them in the bottom of his cage. He knows how to open his cage door. He opens the door and then closes and locks it. He has a dry sense of humor. I bumped my knee on a table and he laughed. I told him it wasn't funny. He said uh huh. I said no, it hurt. He said "So, sorry." Then he laughed. He can take the back off the tv remote, take the batteries out and run. He internalizes everything. I can tell when he is thinking things out. He also is tone deaf. He sings, but really off key. And when he thinks I have been home too long, he asks me if I am going to go bye bye. If I say no, he says Sharee, go bye bye. He is definitely opinionated. But I have had my grey for almost 24 years. I took him home when he was 10 weeks old and he had weaned himself at 5 weeks and started talking when he was 6 months old. Most greys don't start talking until about a year old.

it’s weird to me how cody makes some of the noises my african grey makes lol. my experience with my african grey is, he’s a lot more demanding than my smaller birds. he does need to be more intellectually stimulated. he picks up on my behaviors and i find it so amazing. he’s starting to be more noisy, i don’t mind, i actually love it. he also loves to show off in front of people that aren’t me. he’s an amazing bird to have but he’s very challenging at times.

I have an African grey JOJO. He will be 20 next year and I am 37, so I got him young. He is so awesome, and so intelligent. The one thing I wasn’t ready for was how messy they are- you are constantly sweeping, wiping things down, and dusting.

I'm watching this and it sounds as if my Timneh African grey was sitting right next to me! I love love love her and have adored African greys since I was a little kid. But I will say, I'm glad she wasn't my first parrot and I'm glad she's not my only parrot. We have a great bond and mutual understanding and respect for one another, but I don't think she'll ever have the same adoration for me like my cockatiel does. My green cheek conure is a tiny, evil genius and louder than my grey any day of the week!

Love your videos. Over the last few months, I’ve become completely fascinated and enamored with birds, Greys in particular. But your videos, as well as a few others, have convinced me that even though I am ‘old enough’ and financially able to, I would not be the best parent for many of the reasons you mention. That being said, I do want to get involved in volunteering my time and resources. So thanks for all you do and for bringing awareness to these magnificent creatures.

Leave the egg, or she may try and lay more. Provide extra calcium. You can replace the egg with a fake if you can get one but you can just leave it until she gets bored of it.

I think two things to add is they are more dusty then other birds except cockatoos so if you have allergies they may not be a good fit. Also they have more of a tendency to be calcium deficient so its good to focus on that in their diet. You can just never stop learning when it comes to any bird from budgies to macaws!! So fun to see crazy Cody she is so fun!!❤❤❤

Sorry if not the right place to write this...but as I am not into Instagram etc., thought to bring up. Would you consider a " cleaning and repais" vlog reg. what it takes to keep up the house w your flock? Assume you have multiple air filters? I know you have to do woodwork or wall repairs. Most people have no idea ....Meanwhile, explaining Grey behaviors was very thorough.. Enjoy your informative vlogs.

Not all parrots like rough scratching or skritching their head or neck. Some prefer gentle stroking instead, and will seem to fall asleep while nodding off while you're petting them. My CAG and one pionus were like this.

I have a yellow napped Amazon. What started as baby sitting has become my velcro bird. He cuddles, sleeps, follows me. I can't leave him at all.... the owner is a afraid to take him home, in case it would stress him out. I was scared of him in the beginning, i never had one. I cared him on a stick, cause i have seen the damage he's done to his owner, her daughter and many others. So far since him and i became buddies, he hasn't bitten me, and i can do anything to him. But all i have read is negative about him. But he's nothing like what i have been reading.... i need help with my new buddy.... i need to know if this the norm for him.

If you are thinking of getting a African Gray parrot. Do your homework first . Please Please don't get one if you not sure. It's not fair on the bird if it's gunna be locked in a cage i let .my grey is out of his cage at 7am he's out all day an goes to bed at 7pm I got him when he was only 12 weeks old he's now 5 ..I just hate the thought of a parrot only being let out for a hr or 2 like some of these forums say .. Charlie my grey has clipped fethers he gets of his cage an walks around our house he will climb on the stairs them onto the bannister. We have 3 large dogs an 2 cats they all get on well the dogs an cats give him respect..only cos bit them when he climbs down of his cage an the dogs on the floor they part like the red see an let him past it funny😂 I suffer with mental health . My parrot 🦜 ♥️ is a ray of sunshine when I feeling down bit depressed he always listens to my problems an dusnt judge me ❤ plus he very protective if my wife tries to sit to close to me on the couch he goes nuts ...so if you are thinking about getting a African grey please read up bout them first. Hey Marlene (and comment section)! I really want a medium size to bigger size parrot. I have had two budgies for about a year and they are really fun! You would never think that they have that much personality. Anyway, my dilemma is that I am a student and I participate in travel basketball. My concern is that I won’t have enough time due to travel. The longest I would be gone is 3 days. Any advice?

I've had Rosa (10 yr old rescue Congo African Grey) for 2 years. Started watching your videos months before I got her. Yes, they are like noisy curious toddlers that never grow up. Borrow a toddler to see if you are ready! Just like a toddler, establish a routine right away. Especially if uncaged for most of the day (covered quiet time, bedtime & eating schedule). They are content with predictable routines and having someone nearby. Caged only when no one is home. Rosa is a one person bird. She tolerates my daughter and husband, but bonded with me. We're working on cuddling, without stimulation. She laid 3 eggs last spring, so we're not repeating that again!! Lol. Head scratches and shoulder time only right now. I love her and all her constant chatter.. but she gets downright obnoxious vying for my attention if someone else is in the room with me. I can see why some birds get obese, don't over-feed them to quiet them. They aren't screeching because they are hungry, they just want to BE with their person.

I love the abuse I get from my CAG. Sometimes I come in from work and say ‘hi. I’m home’ The parrot replies can be ‘oh no’, ‘shut up’, ‘heeeeelooo’ With CAG’s you just can’t predict what they will come out with. But thats not the most impressive part of owning a CAG. It’s their timing that just leaves me opened mouth. Once I stubbed my toe on the coffee table and the parrot (who was in his cage) came straight out with ‘ohh. Ouch. Ouch’ ha ha

I am planning on becoming an avian veterinarian Marlene!🕊 I've lived with birds my whole life too- my parents had a Senegal and a Meyers since before I was born. Those birds are sadly no longer with us, but now I own a Goffin cockatoo named Cheeky. I got her at age 14, which sounds awfully irresponsible, but I am so very committed to her and so are my parents. A year and a half after I rescued her, I sustained a Traumatic Brain Injury. It is draining to say the least, to look after my feathered toddler, as well as care for myself. Yet here I am, age 20 with years of experience already with parrots that I hope will translate into my veterinary career. I also volunteer at a wildlife rehabilitation center, and a avian vet clinic, while still living with my debilitating condition. Thanks for spreading awareness of how hard these pets are to care for Marlene! 💕
