Well, I think it ties in more to the lore actually since the vortiguants hadn't had any actual intention to hurt freeman (due to the voritguants hating the nihilanth), they only were required to due to their shock collars. While cool, it's pretty odd to include a stealth system in this part of the game considering the player's got an arsenal capable of killing *literally* anything.
@jcdenton21876 жыл бұрын
It almost seems largely unintentional to me. Like the Alien Grunts at the end only turn to look at the sound of the explosion, whereas basically any game with a sensible stealth system has enemies move to investigate them. The Assassins are the only enemy that does something and even then it's incredibly basic. Tentacles are about the only enemy I think stealth was a big thought for since they are basically unkillable and you have to distract them with sound and avoid making sound yourself around them.
@laurabranigan77616 жыл бұрын
i believe that too. TENTACLE was a enemy to the player learn some stealth. but the game doesnt took advantage of that because its meaningless use stealth or not.
@minh32646 жыл бұрын
Not really, some people wasted a lot of ammo fighting the big headcrab boss and stealth is a good alternative to pass the guards without wasting health armor and ammo. The part where the grunts turned to the explosion is pretty basic. You can do that to other enemies, not just this section.
@jcdenton21876 жыл бұрын
vandal 33 That's a good point. Even then, it could be hinted at more or just be a bit more fleshed out. But at least now I can actually see a reason to even include stealth for this section
@laurabranigan77616 жыл бұрын

Half Life 1 has a great atmosphere! The low poly graphics, fuzzy textures, lightning system, funny and low bit rate sound effects (I'm convinced that the tentacles are just cows and the vortigaunts are just a recording of somebody saying "DIE!" in a really raspy voice), even the lack thereof of background sounds in some areas other than walking sound effects or the crunching sound from the tentacles (as weird and specific of an example that is) makes this game really unique. And it is really creepy and melancholic to walk through abandoned, old maps. My favorites are the map with the hotels set in very early morning (I think it is called 4 am) and the futuristic map in the Scientist Hunt mod.

Although I'm impressed by the whole addition of a stealth path in the level, you can really tell that they had been running out of development time at this point. The tentacles, especially, were very obviously not made for Xen. They still move up and down as if it was the rocket chamber, and sparks fly off when they hit stuff even if it's not metal. Plus, they just make footstep sounds when they hit the xen rocks. It's a shame that Xen had to be so rushed.
@jcdenton21876 жыл бұрын
Definitely. Xen shows its signs of being half-baked rather badly. Visually it's pretty interesting and I like a lot of the world they've made of Xen. It's just a shame it's so unfun to play through.
@MarphitimusBlackimus6 жыл бұрын
The dirt footstep sounds when a Tentacle hits a surface here is intentional. Tentacles are defined by the mapper as to what sort of surface they "tap". In Blast Pit, they use the metal clang sound for the silo. In Surface Tension and throughout Xen, they use the dirt footstep sound for dirt. There's also a setting for tapping water, but this is not used in any of the games.
@wolfcl0ck6 жыл бұрын
Really? If that's the case then Valve really just got kinda lazy then

This is a rare example of poor communication of Valve's part. They didn't do enough to make it clear you could stealth your way through this section, nor is there much incentive to as you're facing a similar density of baddies that you've dealt with in previous sections of the game. Nice find.
@sparkz95026 жыл бұрын
Gaben said himself that Xen was one of his biggest disappointments. The dev team was clearly running out of its creative energy by this point unfortunately. Hopefully Black Mesa can do Xen justice.
@jimbojones51366 жыл бұрын
LMAO poor communication? Do they need to hand hold you through this? The route is a reward for those who explore the map my friend
@Replica_Films20006 жыл бұрын
i dont get it Xen was awesome typical situation where something is good but only the devs think its bad or well maybe his vision was cooler but who cares you cant say that and then Make Hl2 the way it is and pretend that that was the better decision
@llSuperSnivyll6 жыл бұрын
So many people complaining about "hand-holding" in a way it makes me doubt if they even know what hand-holding actually means. The complaint about poor communication is very sound as... well... how many people even know you could stealth through the level instead of run-and-gun? It is not cramped with enemies and you have lots of weapons and ammo. You've seen more dangerous maps before to even bother with stealth in this one. If you get detected they send you a whooping two grunts and two controllers... as if that were dangerous or anything. What should have been the case here is the map spawning a ton more enemies if you alerted the guards. This way, when the player dies after being overwhelmed, they think "I've got to avoid triggering the alarm" - they get a motivation. The case it actually is barely does any harm at all to the player - maybe wasting some Gauss ammo or Magnum rounds, which is laughable - there's no motivation. Stealth is actually a waste of time.
@Sumguy216 жыл бұрын
Jimbo Jones given how many are claiming they've played the game many times without seeing this, I believe valve has been too subtle about the possibility of using stealth in this section.

Why do those Vortigaunts remain neutral? Are they tired of being slaves? Are they paying attention only to their work? Are they a different kind of Vortigaunt? Is it a bug?
@Tamamo-no-Bae6 жыл бұрын
I think it's intentional, it's their way of subtly rebelling. If you stay too long a controller pops up and they all turn hostile.
