My favorite version was from the movie Shrek. I was really apprehensive when this came up as a recommendation and I almost didn't watch it. Once I clicked the video, I was a Pentaholic. I fell down the rabbit hole and I just couldn't believe how I never found this group. This group really is the reason why groups like Home Free and other acapella groups are so popular.

Got me all crying in bed! Im old! I remember Leonard Cohen's original version of it. Written in 1984. I was 18 at the time so my knowledge of religion at that time was 1 Born Catholic, 2 Became agnostic in 10th grade because I saw through the lies. I still hadn't figured out what a Jewish man was doing writing a religious song. However I studied a lot of religions around the world (A book called the Encyclopedia of Religion) I still have it. I learned a lot from that huge book. The fact the Hallelujah is not just for Catholics and Christians. Even though I am now Atheist I dutifully respect other people faiths and truths and opinions. Now that I know there are 4600 religions in the world I've decided to celebrate as many as I can while I am alive. Thank you both so much. Cohen's song tells a story of broken love, true love remembered and mourned, guilt, penance, and of finding peace. The song's thematic content is oddly fitting for its history.

I don't think PTX realised but this is not a religious song. The thing that David did that 'pleased the Lord' was to 'begat' Solomon and so found the dynasty that ended with Joseph. The cry of Hallelujah was basically what David shouted whilst begatting.

When my Grandmother passed away in the 90's (she was a devout catholic) there was a song we wanted to play at her funeral mass but was denied. We wee informed that only "Approved" songs can be plaid in the church. I believe it was Sarah Mclachlan. So we could only play it at the cemeteries. I know people who have wanted to use this song at certain times within the church walls and we're denied. @@shirleymoffat3338 Agreed. Very similar to the verse that Kirstin sings "I've seen your flag on the marble arch". Think a lot of people these days don't get that reference due to the fashion trend of waxing. Love the line that Mitch sings as well, "All I ever learned from love was how to shoot someone who outdrew you", I.E. he'd learned to hold off until his partner had climaxed, but now that his partner no longer "cared for music", it resulted in a cold and lonely "Hallelujah".

Scott and Mitch had a side channel called SuperFruit, I have to explain all this so you understand, On there Scott talked Mitch into doing his favorite song from his favorite Broadway musical, the Play is called Wicked, the song is Defying Gravity. The play is the Wizard of Oz told from the perspective of the witches. In this song one witch Elphaba (strange name I know) is arguing with Glenda about learning how to be the first witch to fly on a broom. (the name Defying Gravity makes sense now). You kind of need to understand all of this to not only understand the song, but their "costumes".
