The reason Jack Nicholson has two roles is because Burton had orders from execs not to kill off his character. So Burton gives two roles to Jack and kills off both

I think that, and other trivia, goes to show that Mars Attacks is a movie that's best enjoyed with some context about the stuff behind the scenes. I feel like Doug's criticisms largely came from expecting a different movie. Obviously requiring a bit of insider info prior to watching a movie doesn't give it a pass, in fact I totally understand that it makes people dislike it, but I think it's given a little too little credit nonetheless.

Mars Attacks is a movie based on an overly violent children's trading card game from the 50s. If you go into it expecting it to just be a comedy movie, you're watching it for the wrong reasons. It's like watching Watership Down and getting mad that it wasn't a feel-good movie about cuddly bunny-rabbits. It's not technically a comedy; its JUST a goofy 50s B-Movie made in the 90s.

'Mars Attacks!' is the epitome of movies made in the '90s. I really couldn't see it getting the green light if the idea for the movie were pitched in any other decade. People loved quirky movies during that time period for some reason. Simpler times I suppose. I personally love the movie, but a lot of it has to due with the nostalgia I get when I saw it so many times as a kid. Great times, man...

There is something strangely... mean in the way this movie treats its characters. Like you are suposed to hate these people and want them to suffer(as in those horror movies where every one is a dick), but the movie doesn't really give us reason to either like or dislike them. They are mostly just... going on with their lives. I don't know, it's kind of messed up.

Unfortunately for you, this is how advertisement has to work for youtube videos. He has to make it known throughout the majority of the video where it will be bluntly noticed. Just a single momentary talk at the very beginning would get him in trouble - he can't keep it for the end because most people may not see it at that point, and so he HAS to add a full on advertisement HALFWAY through the video even if it annoys the shit out of most people, tolerate it or quit youtubers who need to do this. Or just mute your audio when the ycome on an d skip it so you don't have to tolerate it. Literally 1000 different options then yelling at Doug who NEEDS to do this legally to satisfy your selfish overly expectant ego.

That's exactly how I felt about his review of The Mummy (the 1999 version). It's weird; it seems like there's quite a few that have actual, good constructive criticism, and then there's just plain criticizing for the point of criticizing. Am I the only one who feels that way? Because I actually like his videos. But this - and **especially** the The Mummy review - just felt like hating on a movie just because. Edit: Because there **IS** a difference between "constructive criticism" and just "omg, that was awful; did you see how awful that was?"-type criticism. The latter is just finding things to pick at and criticize; the former is where you actually say "wow, that was awful" and then end it with "here's why and how they could have made it better". That's how many of his episodes are; he'd say it's awful/great and then explain why. Not so much here. It's just weird to me.

My theory is that the translator doesn't work properly. The scientists who built it are going on a LOT of assumptions as to how the Martian language works. Linguists spend years studying and translating languages and these guys just come in an say, "Hey, we made a translation machine and it only took two or three days." Take the scene when the Martians first land, how do we know they're really saying, "We come in peace"? They could be saying, "We claim this planet for the glory of Mars," or "Surrender now or die!" When the hippy releases the dove, notice how the ambassador scowls. This could be out of annoyance as to how stupid humans are and thinking, "OK, maybe killing a species as stupid as yours might do the universe some good!" Well, that's what I think anyway.
@sonic8005
@sonic8005 6 жыл бұрын
Eh. The Martians are supposed to be just dicks so lying through their teeth is probably part of the intention. The implied reason for why some of the rays leave green skeletons and some leave red is that they are keeping score potentially.
@heavycritic9554
@heavycritic9554 6 жыл бұрын
Isn't the point that the translation was wrong? The Martians didn't actually come in peace, and they were probably not saying "Don't run! We are your friends!" in earnest while they're slaughtering people like animals (they had figured out what the translator was, and were trolling the hell out of the people they were killing - them trolling humanity is kind of a big thing). The person who created the translator was the man who was completely certain that the Martians would have to be peaceful since they have attained a higher form of society. When the "mows like a harvest" thing comes up, the humans think it's an error - but that may well be the only thing the machine actually got right.

That's kind of what I was going for, though. That the Martians have realized how bad the translation from the device is, and they say whatever translates into "Don't run! We are your friends!". Either way, there's some galactic level trolling happening in that movie. :)

I really don't think you get what Burton was going for. He made a Z list 1950's horror film with A list actors. It's a homage and reference to Ed Wood, it's the natural progression from that film. You criticised that the character's deaths don't mean anything. However, you didn't see the funny side and shock (at the time) to audiences that Michael J Fox, Jack Nicholson (twice) and Glenn Close die in a film. They never die in films. The film was meant to shock. The humour was in the absurdity and the shock value.

So, in that sense, it's a lot like Terry Gilliam's Brazil or Zero Theorem. I don't see that as a criticism either. If a movie sets out to be a laugh-out-loud film, but fails to meet the mark (case in point, Boeing Boeing, ergh, that was such a swing-and-a-miss), then I'd criticize it for being unfunny. But when a film sets out to be a kind of a cynically humorous social satire, then it's kinda unfair to fault it for not being a belly-flopper.

I love Mars Attacks. It's just a silly and stupid movie, and it knows it. It's not a parody of another movie, it's a parody of itself. Love it.

Yeah, I'm also not on the same page as NC on this one. I really like Mars Attacks. I always took it as a parody which is played straight. So of course you don't have an overabundance of jokes. Everyone in this movie is trying to act as if this was real afterall. Still it manages to poke fun at the scifi genre, politics and society as a whole. I for one got most of the tropes Burton was referencing. The characters obviously don't have arcs and only one decisive trait, because they are charicatures of well known archetypes.

The curious thing is that if this is one of the last real parodies ever made before the crap like Epic Movie and Meet the Spartans started to flow, and NC himself has a video criticizing that kind of parody and yet here we have him pointing out the exact opposite of that...

In a way Mars Attacks suffered the same fate as Starship Troopers. They were both parodies released around the same time which failed at the boxoffice and critically and I think the audience failed to respond to them for most of the same reasons. However, unlike Starship Troopers it wasn't ever redeemed afterwards and didn't develop a strong cult following.

Remember Garbage Pail Kids? It's one of those. It's a movie based on a Topps trading card set that had some disturbing (for the time) artwork. Except Mars Attacks! translates somewhat better to a movie because there actually was a narrative of sorts in its trading card set instead of just a bunch of grossly disfigured children.

Strange is right. Watching them all play it so straight with such a comedic theme is in it's own way mesmerizing and confusing all at the same time. specially when your waiting for most of these large and slightly strange personalities live up to that extreme and it just never does.

I always felt this was a satire of 1950’s Martian invasion movies. The characters were always a little off, the aliens taken a bit too seriously, and the whole film absurd. This film captures that completely.

Actually, "Mars Attacks" was supposed to be like a cheap, old B-movie based on trading cards that were made in 1962. The Mars Attacks trading cards even had the martians kidnapping women, burning cows, shooting dogs, using the same weapons and robots, and other stuff you see in the movie.

Same- I was 6 when this came out so it kind of scared me, but still, it introduced to me to the macabre, heck I was so glad to actually SEE satire and parody to crappy movies such as Independence Day. with all the fake patriotism and so, it was refreshing to watch this movie. This movie is based on a pack of 60's trading cards, and you could say it has this 60's Mort Drucker Mad Magazine feel were it shows you the same scenes and dialogues as the movie it is parodying but with a twist and laughs. But just like, let's say the Grinch (this movie is way much better than that movie though) there's this amount of filler which makes it kind of... mmm... eh... this should've been like Batman Returns, but it's as if they gave us the 1989 Batman version- much more retained. Not saying it's bad, it could've been much more--- heck it even stinks executive producer with that happy ending. With all those celebrities, Tim Burton was way too conditioned.

@DetectiveMekova
@DetectiveMekova 6 жыл бұрын
He pointed out that he knew it was a satire, but it doesn't do the satire bit right. It doesn't commit to the satire because either it was too serious or too goofy. So in the end it fails at both. As a homage to 50's movies, it's not good because it looks too nice. Too clean. It just doesn't work. It's like if The Room had a big budget. It just wouldn't work because the movie itself isn't supposed to be serious, so why spend so much money on it?

Yes, but you can make something campy while still having fun characters and dialogue, something which Mars attacks didn't have. And even if you like over the top violence, there were little to no variety to what the martians were doing for most of the movie, there were too many scenes of them just shooting things, as opposed to all wacky weapons and gadgets they could have used.

Elric the Impaler I'm not saying that the movie needed any deep message or complex story, but just having all the characters be bland cannon fodder was boring and underwhelming, and the action scenes were repeated too often with no variety, plus it doesn't make sense for a movie that tries so hard to have a colorful and goofy aesthetic to have so few jokes in it. I'd say Starship Troopers is a much better example of a movie that's campy fun but while also being a satire of war and sci-fi movies.
