I think for what the DSL20 is, it performs well in many areas, and is a good budget alternative to something like the silver jubilee which many may dream of but can not afford. They have similar tones but the jubilee excels with the cleanliness of the gain structure. It’s nicely defined across the sound spectrum. It’s not that the DSL has that much more gain. Gain and noise are not the same.you can have high gain with it being well defined. I do think either is a great option and it may come down to budget.

Spent a good 3 to 4 hours demoing both these amps at PMT Manchester ( thanks for the patience PMT), also looked at the dsl 40 cr....Came home with the mini jubilee... no contest.

Absolutely. Shame about this shocking video but that aside, the mini jubilee covers way more ground despite less controls and the difference in tone is immediately noticeable. I did buy the dsl40cr prior but big mistake, horrible toneless amp.I quickly sold it for the jube. The jube is a great amp. I love mine.

I love Marshall overdrive, distortion. I bought a Mesa Mark V 25 and have been putting it through the ropes. I was going to buy the Mini Jubilee but glad I went with the Mesa. @Al I personally know people that purchased the Jubilee and after hearing the DSL they wished they had purchased the DSL and had $700 left to work with. I believe the same would go for the Runt. Nobody knew Marshall would do so well with the re-designed DSL. And it is quite different then those other two amps. I am speaking from experience from fellow players that I know that wish they did not have to introduce solid state pedals to achieve the gain of the DSL. Also, the clean is fantastic and nearly nowhere to be found on the Jubilee which is to be expected but equally appreciated on the DSL. Also, internally the build quality of the Jubilee is nearly identical if not identical for $700 more. Not a bad amp at all. These are just my observations and my experience talking with Jubilee owners who experienced buyers remorse.

@Al Agreed. I was more complimenting the DSL by my statement and can see how owners of the Jubilee would be aggravated by such a comment. While not sarcastic, it was mean to be taken partly in jest and should not be looked at as a burn. Also, FWIW, "boutique" amps are all good until you realize that they are usually not all that satisfying long term. Marshall has 'that' sound. And I would buy a Jubilee for reasons other than what the DSL does. They would compliment each other quite well. Cheers!

I own and love the DSL20. In this video, the DSL sounds beefier, but not as articulate. The Jubilee sounds thinner but retains note definition much better. Run them together to get the best aspects of each!

Love this demo of two similar but different amps. Kind of a lab approach to a demo - takes the players playing skill out of the comparison. Sometimes demos are convincing because of a players skill and not the quality of the amp. DSL seems to have more gain. Jubilee seems to have more texture and life and playing sensitivity - but does not have the gain range of the DSL. The price difference is not trivial. If you don't need the higher gain of the DSL, the Jubilee may be worth the extra cost if you want a more expressive and sensitive amp. I also love the tone of the Hughes and Kettner and their modern looks is super cool - but the are more voiced for modern vs the more classic tone of these Marshalls. I am sure the Hughes and Kettner beats both of these for more modern metal tones.

Great analysis! Just wanted to chime in and say that I spent a 1/2 hour demoing a DSL20CR in my local music store today, and with the tone-shift clicked in and a ts808 running into the front it had plenty of the punch and articulation that modern metal players chase after (and wayyyyyy more than enough gain, for me at least).

Def liked the Jube more. But at $500, the DSL will be hard to pass up. But for me I think gain past noon may not get much use. Also, I agree that the tone with Tone Shift engaged isn't very appealing.

If you like Slash's tone then buy 2525. It's scooped and trebley, but 100% Slash's sound. 2525+EQ pedal will give you unlimited combinations of sound.

DSL for the win (IMHO)! Another very cool demo! I think zero presence really muffles both of the amps' tone though - especially on the Jube. PS-The tone shift button is pretty worthless!

Resonance and presence set on zero makes the DSL sound thin and fizzy with no bottom end... That's like setting the bass and mid knobs to zero for the demo... 🙄🔰 Put all the tone shaping knobs in the median position for sound tests... 😉👍

DSL: - more gain - more compressed in a bad way (I'm not sure if it's just the gain difference) - excellent marshall tone for the price Jubilee - better articulation on mid range tones - winner of this round This was a good example of tonal differences between these two amps. Either so I would prefer in real life to compare best clean/crunch/distorted sound against each other. Knobs are there for that you can compensate the tone where it's needed. Can't wait to get my dsl20hr. I don't mind if 3x more expensive amp sounds little better on youtube :). Thank you for doing this video.

Had dsl20, tried different speakers, tubes, cabs, guitars. It sounded ok, sometimes good, but it sounded like a cathode biased, vox/ Marshall. It doesn't react like a jcm800, 900, or 2000. Ended selling it after trying to like it for 1 year. It always sounded like a 66% Marshall, something was missing.

Thanks for posting this video. The frustrating thing for me is no music store anywhere near me has the Jubilee to test out, so we only have you-tube... I have the DSL20 head but I am thinking of up-grading to Jubilee. For my ears there was a difference but not that much, but a lot of comments are that Jubilee is way better. That's why I wish I could find one to compare myself. Great vid though.

Using only drive isent the right way of tweeking a marshall...it has alot of what pickups u using so us EQ and presens for optimal tone on each Amp..

You know both of these amps sound a bunch better if you crank the master and heat up the power tubs and the dsl eq isnt like the rest of the marshalls. Depending on which speaker your running you can use both the bass and the res. But still high midds and highs. Good video though.

Thanks for the demo! Although the price are miles apart the Jube has the far superior tone in my book and more headroom it seems. Also I could not hear any real clean tone from the DSL, which on the other hand seem to have much more gain on tab - question is, is it usable. I for myself need a real dynamic clean tone once in while.I agree with 2550marshall btw that the presence control setting you prefer don't necessarily agree with my ears but this is personal preference, as my humble opinion above.

I get a beautiful clean tone with mine. I'm running an Epi Les Paul with Probuckers straight to the head and it sounds like glass. Keep the gain below 9 o'clock and back off of the guitar's volume slightly. I was actually pretty impressed. I mean, it doesn't sound like my Mesa, but it didn't cost me $1800 either!!!

Quick Note : Tone shift works on the DSL20HR amp's EQ section on BOTH channels.Have not had the DSL20HR long but have found I use the Tone Shift more on the clean channel even if it is just a quick On/Off while adjusting things.

the jube is way better. Crank that DSL master to 2 0 clock and play it, then switch to 10 watt mode and listen for a change in tone. Now do same thing with mini jube. The tone don't change on the mini jube when you switch power levels. So I have no idea why you would buy two 20 watt EL34 amps that just don't make sense. Especially when you make it seem as if they are both same quality when the DSL sucks with its useless pentode triode half power level. All DSL's suck because of this.

I had a problem with mine when using my looper through the fx loop. If looping a clean track and switching to Ultra for a lead the volume dropped way down. When looping a dirty phrase and switching to the classic channel the loop got way loud! Anyone else?

Here is the major difference why the Jube is best. #1 Was built in England. #2 the poweramp is much better, because it is not pentode triode power scaling like the DSL is. Which is why you don't hear any difference in tone when you switch the silver jube amp from 20w to 5 watts. But when you switch power on the DSL from 20 watts to 10w you can tell something gets a little sour sounding. That's what sucks about pentode to triode power scaling. The mini Jube is in Pentode configuration no matter if in 20 watt mode or 5 watt mode that's why poweramp is better. That's the only thing different between these amps other than two totally different preamps. And also the DSL might be MG15 cabinet particle board. Where as the Jube is Baltic Birch the real deal. And plus jube has higher grade parts as well. Oh and also the Jube has a choke which the DSL20 don't. The Jube is by far way better. These new 2018 Marshall's are for beginners who don't know if they are gonna stick with guitar or not. So Marshall had to come up with something cheap so the price can be lower.

Tim Right why would they lie about It? I have built some tube amps before and know for a fact there are other attenuation methods that are not pentode triode crap. You regulate the voltage into the power stage and will keep the curve on those EL34s but with less power. Several boutique manufacturers use a similar attenuation model with very honest results. If you want to be bitter, that's your problem pal. Marshall done a solid improvement on the DSL range. They will give some boutique manufacturers a run for their money. Kudos to them. If you are the owner of a previous DSL model, don't feel bad it got better and you may loose some cash.

I could, if I so desired and even if I could build them, it would be just faster to go and buy one as they are not that expensive. The MIDI switching alone would be worth it, since constructions on point to point would be a nightmare. I don't know why you are so worked up. You are convincing me you a 2005 DSL40 owner. I wonder if you had to put up with 1997 DSLs owners feeling "cheated" by Marshall. Now I am questioning myself why am I wasting my time talking to you. Cheers from Brazil. By the way, I am happy with my main 3 amps I play. I don't really get caught up in all amps with tons of features and frills. The simple amps always are the winners when ya set them side by side and listen. That's why I use 3 amps with AB box. 1959, 2203, and a fender for super cleans. ya really don't need any more than that. Shit Rhoads only needed 3 gain stages lol and it all was great.....especially the Tribute record. Happy scales dude and cheers as well on these notes.

I have a Hughes and Kettner Tube 50 Combo that will put both of these amps to shame. I also own a Hughes and Kettner Grandmeister Deluxe 40 head, with a 2x12 quarter stack cabinet, with 2 Celestion Vintage 30's in there, that will also blow the doors off of these two amps. Friedman is also some more good amps that would bury these. If you want amps with alot better sounds and features, Hughes and Kettner, or Friedmans are the way to go. Marshall is overpriced, poor sounding, overrated garbage. Just my opinion. Thanks for posting this video.
