@@landajimmy If everyone could experience the tone of a properly set up vintage Marshall , Friedman and the rest of the copycats would be out if business. Amazingly for how much they cost , you can actually buy a real vintage Marshall!
@GoogleEqualsEvil4 жыл бұрын
@@johnmarshall3903 The irony and hypocrisy of someone calling Friedman and other amps "copycats of a vintage Marshall" (which isn't true) is off the charts since vintage Marshall's are literal copies of Fender Tweed amps. Specifically, the first Marshall amplifier (JTM45) was a direct copy of the FENDER 1959 5F6-A Bassman *circuit* and everything Marshall produced after that up to the early JCM800's, were just minor modifications of that same Fender 5F6-A circuit. They literally stole the circuit from Fender. And yes, they stole it. When you directly copy someone else's intellectual property without compensating (paying) them, that is theft, period. Personally I'm not a big fan of Friedman's tone (and would never own one), probably because I never liked the "Jose" tone. He basically just took a lot of Jose Arredondo's modifications (and others) from the late 70's / early 80's and incorporated them into his amps (two examples right off the top of my head - the 2.7k cathode resistor being repeated in the preamp and the diode clipping for extra saturation / distortion). That said, a Friedman of equivalent price is a far more versatile amp than any vintage Marshall, offering 2-3 channels with a lot more distortion and more tone shaping ability. In regard to price, a vintage style Marshall is a MUCH simpler amp with far fewer components, which makes them cheaper to manufacture. That includes the 1959HW shown in this video. It's significantly overpriced for what it is. There is nothing about it that is superior in terms of quality of components or manufacturing. On the contrary, the boutique brands like Friedman that are made in the USA, are significantly better quality and cost the same or less than the Marshall 1959HW (which is $3,300). At least this new 1959HW is decent quality, unlike actual vintage Marshall's. Original early Marshall's (60's / early 70's) used the cheapest parts they could find and were some of the worst quality guitar amps ever produced. Their poor manufacturing quality also came from their lack of standardization of parts. When they ran out of a certain value, instead of waiting to resupply with the correct value, they would just use whatever they had on hand. That resulted in many inconsistencies in tone from amp to amp. That's why musicians of that era would go into a musical instrument store and play every Marshall they had to find a good one. That often meant going to more than one store! If you want a stellar Marshall Plexi (1987 / 1959) it's worth it to buy a made in USA boutique version that is better in every way. Bray, Suhr, Germino, etc. Paying more money just for the Marshall (for a circuit they stole from FENDER) name is retarded.

The 72/73 super leads have more bite and are more aggressive. They have more gain . The pre 72 are warmer and rounder like Pages tone how the west was won. He had some early 69s plexis but didn't start using them as his main stage amps until February 72 but before the 75 tour he had them modded and they became much more biting and strident.. they became even cleaner sounding but less warmth.

Great sounding, grew up with that tone but seriously, it's a great sounding, expensive paper-weight. It does one thing, does it very well, but. And don't be fooled into thinking you'll get the tone with an attenuater. A large part of the tone comes from the physics of what speakers do at high volumes, not just the output stage. Great demo tho.
