The contour controls the amount of mid range that you wish to scoop. If you turn it all the way down, it is bypassed. The frequencies control actually selects the frequencies you want to scoop. If you turn it to the left, it will scoop the mid-bass frequencies. If you turn it to the left, it cuts the higher mids. That's why the freq. Knob didn't work in the distortion mode

I dug my old jackhammer out yesterday. For the first time in about 18 years. I bought it back in the early 2000s when I was at the "all the gain, no tone" stage of my life. I didn't get a good sound at all and gave up on it quickly - yesterday, stuck to OD1 and was all "Holy hell, this pedal is actually amazing!". Quick youtube video search later and I find this video. 100% agree with all of this. Seen as an overdrive pedal, it's a cracking bit of underrated, inexpensive kit.

I have to admit, I watch this video about 10 times a week because it always push me in the mood of getting a Marshall jackhammer because it’s just the perfect Marshall in the box pedal. The frusciante thing is my favorite of course and it’s my aim, but you can get a great AC/DC tone too, and of course a great modern Marshall metal tone. And you’re so great and interesting in your explains. I’m on my way to get one, just need to find the great deal. There are many people who are just out of context with their prices. So I’m patient and as soon as I find the great deal I promise you’ll be the first to know it! And I will dedicated it to you. Greetings from Belgium and have a great Monday !

Using Jackhammer as a brain of pedalboard is one of the best advices anyone ever given! Jackhammer is literally the cheapest pedal I owe (20£ on secondary market) and it works as a base of my sound much better than any other pedal I owe (about 12 overdrive pedals). It gives me a great thick tone, very slightly overdriven only when I strum hard and clean when fingerpicking or playing individual notes… and all my other pedals work amazingly with it! All boss pedals, ehx and ibanez tubescreamer sound brighter and with a bit more gain for solos or just for any kind of fun. Previously I used m133 micro amp to push all my overdrive pedals, but now I use m133 only if I need to make it louder. Jackhammer does all the other work. I can not express how much I appreciate this video and David’s channel. Thanks man! Keep going ✊

I just got it delivered today! I have a Peavey Bandit red stripe, and luckily my practice space has the same amp, but sometimes also a Roland cube from which I just can't get the sound I'm after (pretty much the John sound). That's why I wanted to get the Jackhammer to get my sound somewhat right regardless of the amp I'm playing through. I tried Dave's settings and was initially disappointed at the Jackhammer. It sounded very mushy to me and had a lack of clarity. After I fiddled with all the knobs for a bit and compared it to the pure amp sound without any pedals, however, I got it to behave just like I wanted! I haven't played much through it yet but it seems like it does exactly what I got it for. It also gets rid of any volume jump with the DS-2. I'm not sure yet if I like that, because before, when I played through the Bandit (on the lead channel of course) I had a very slight boost which I kind of liked. If anyone is interested these are the settings I used in my room. I've yet to try it in a louder space in a band setting. Jackhammer: - OD Channel - Volume: FULL - Gain: 08:00 (anything more and it sounds way too overdriven for John stuff.) - Bass: OFF (to me this indeed sounds like overkill at anything over 12 o'clock.) - Treble: 12:00 - Contour: 10:30 - Frequency: 11:00 (changing the contour and frequency settings from Dave's is what got rid of the initial mushiness I experienced.) Bandit: - Lead Channel (Vintage setting) - Pre: 2 (this is about the maximum setting at which the amp is truly clean. I put this around 3 without the Jackhammer.) - Low: 3 - Mid: 1 - High: OFF - Post: 1 - Presence: 10, Resonance: LOOSE, T.Dynamics: 100% This just goes to show that tone is in the hands :) To me my sound is pretty close to Dave's, even with these different settings. The added mid-high range EQ everywhere might also be due to me using probably the cheapest pickups ever, and I prefer a sound just a little brighter than Dave's for my own playing.

The tones your getting with the jackhammer are unreal. Your favorite setting with a strat sounds like John Frusciante, and with a Les Paul sounds like Paul Kossoff! Turn up the gain a bit and the strat sounds like Stevie Ray. I ordered this tonight, after seeing this video. I may have to get two and put em at differnt gain levels Great playing too.

The Marshall Jackhammer is probably one of the most underrated Overdrive pedals in the world. I have so many high-end (expensive) OD pedals, like the GreerAmps Lightspeed, Timmy, OCD, Tumnus and many others, but no matter how I tweak the more expensive pedals I am not able to get a better (cleanish) tone with it than with my Jackhammer stacked with a Boss Blues Driver in front of it. Must be in front or else the tone sucks. Bluesdriver stacked with a Jackhammer and a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe is sheer magic. Even the Jackhammer alone gives amazing tone with my HRD. The Blues Driver is just the icing on the cake. It's insane you can get these pedals for about 35 dollar or euros second hand. Recently i purchased a second Jackhammer and I felt a bit guilty purchasing it from another player. More expensive is not necessarily better. Besides the Jackhammer is build like a tank. I also have a Guv'nor (GV-2) which is also an amazing pedal and use for the dirty, gritty, grunty, distorted tone, which I prefer above my Bogner La Grange. If you can't get an amazing JCM like tone with the Jackhammer and Guv'nor with your Hot Rod Deluxe then you are really doing something wrong with dialing it in.

Ah the Jackhammer - my first distortion pedal, and I got so much use out of it - so many gigs. I still have mine but I don't really use it these days - I find it excessively "marshallizes" the tone of most things. If that's what I want for any particular reason it's a good thing, but with some amps, it just colours the sound too much, to the point where it stifles the tone rather than really adding to it... ...but that tends to be the kind of amp where you'd be better off using something more simple like a boss blues driver.

Awesome pedal.....for you. You make it sound amazing, But I had one and couldnt get on with it.Do you think you get a different sound than others because you play at full volume? Most people cant do that. But in all honesty you are a master of tone....If I heard you playing on the radio...I would KNOW it was you,and thats the sign of the greats...you have your own style (with influences,but who doesnt have influences)...And the settings you us on amps and pedals ....well guitarist magazine should do an interview with you ,because you are an enigma.Like turning the EQ right down (and I believe you when you say your amps arnt modded)......But for others it's muddy.....do you think your high volume is the difference? Either way you sound amazing.Tone really must be in the fingers.I bought a brand new professional strat and it's really bright sounding and lacks mojo........I think I'll sell it and get one of the new 60's reissue strats........more history,and many of the best used 60's strats :)

Hi Dave I have recently come across all your guides and videos and ive gone out and got a jackhammer, im struggling to find the right settings to get this going at to use with the ds2 and Ibanez wah. im running a voxac30c2x have you got some settings you can recommend for the hammer with the frequency and control ? I currently jump the channels which throws the jackhammer compression out the window

I bought the JH a couple of weeks ago and started to mingle and experiment with it, I've been trying to get a srv-like tone, but i cant seem to get that crisp and bright tone. I got my amp setup at clean channel and vol at around 12-1 o' clock. Amp's EQ is treble on 3 o'clock, mids on half, and bass on 11 o'clock. How should i setup my jackhammer or my amp accordingly? (My amp is an Orange Crush 20rt)

For a SRV tone I would recommend a tube-screamer-type pedal like the TS9 or the Maxon OD. The JH-1 is more of a Marshall in a box. :)

Hi Dave, thanks for your amazing reviews and information. I had a ds-2 on a Marshall Origin 50 head and it didn't work for me. I bought the jackhammer after seeing many of your videos to try to get that Frusciante distortion that I love, but still with the jackhammer on the ds-2 does not behave and have a lot of noise and a big volume jump when max out. Any advice on the amp configuration? I use a Telecaster whit simple but active pick-ups. Could this active thing be the problem? Thanks again for your amazing content!

Hey Dave! I’m building a Frusciante style pedal board and was wondering, should I use a Jack hammer, or a golden plexi for Johns tone? Which one helps with the DS-2 and WH10 volume jumps most? Thanks!!

I really don’t understand... I have the MG, I just bought the Jackhammer and have all the same settings that he has... why does the tone sound so bad? Like not having the treble on makes it sound so damn muted... I don’t know what to do anymore.

Ive been having the same problem, especially at lower volumes. I've discovered today that for me the problem is the frequency knob. Having it all the way up has been murdering my tone. I've turned it down to about a quarter and it's made a huge difference. Good luck

Hi Dave! Looking for a JF/Dave Simpson tone, I got a Jackhammer, a Ds2, an Ibanez wh10, and a Big Muff. Is it worth it to add a Guv'nor 2? I've watched your vids but still can't understand if I need one or not (and how it behaves with the others). Keep on rocking! Thanks!

Hi Dave - does the Guv'nor work as well as the Jackhammer with regards to the compression/volume jumps of the ds2 and wah? Is it only limiting the volume of those pedals because the volume on the JH is maxed? If it's set at a lower volume, do you then get volume jumps? Many thanks
@thedavesimpson
@thedavesimpson 6 жыл бұрын
Sadly the guv'nor doesn't work for this no. Its limiting the ds2 and wh10 due to the gain from the pedal. Its compressing the signal and keeping the pedals in line. : )

Awesome video Dave, incredible playing! I just bought the JH and have yet to try it out properly cranked up, you’ve given me some great setting suggestions! Question for you, I’m pretty new to this and just have a Marshall mg100dfx combo amp. I’ve been struggling to get a good tone out of it, it always seems to sound shrill and harsh, hopefully the pedal will help. What eq settings would you suggest for the amp, with it only having a little speaker, not a full cab? Thanks again!

Thank you very much and I would set it a few different ways. Depends what your after. ON the clean channel i would set it like Gain 10 Bass 2 Middle 3 Treble 1 On the the overdrive channel i would set it to od one and use the jackhammer to boost the gain Gain 10 Bass 5 Middle 0 treble 0 contour 0 volume 10 You will have tweak these for them to work for you though. : ) I hope this helps. : )
