Marshall Origin - A Cheap AND Good Marshall?
The new Marshall Origin is an affordable, all tube amplifier. It looks sort of vintage, and it's supposed to be able to give you some seriously good tones. Does it? That's what I aim to find out here.

I just recently purchased the Origin 20w combo and I'm absolutely blown away by the tone of this little thing with just a 10x speaker ! I think the 20w head with 2x12 is the way to go for me.

I love Marshalls (spent the past 50+ years listening to bands use them ) and this sounds awesome - but you make virtually everything sound awesome Elmo ! Great bit of Hendrix - now that really hit the spot for me as I always like to see how others paly his stuff so I can learn even more variations. Rock on :-) .

Elmo. the Tilt Control according to Marshall is like jumpering the old Marshalls NORMAL and BRIGHT channels like we use to do years ago (i'm 65). It does do about the same thing tone wise.

Hey Elmo, you said you have no idea how amps work, you are just a guitarist. So am I, but recently on KZbin, I hooked into a legendary, highly respected and internationally known, American vintage valve amp restorer called Uncle Doug from Texas. This guy really knows what makes the shit tick and he is multi-skilled in so many ways, I wish I could jack-plug straight into his brain and steal what he knows because it is simply amaaaziing!!!. I have to confess that generally, I haven't a fucking clue what it is he is talking about, but the more I watch his excellent amp breakdown and repair schedules, the more things start to make sense and take on a form of meaning that subliminally gives me a kind of base level understanding of how a valve amp operates and the real talent that goes into designing and building them - It's genius really. I am hooked on a more or less voyeuristic level on his vids - they are very relaxed and soothing to watch and rather reassuring in that somebody has dedicated his whole life to amps and how to save them from oblivion or the dumpster. It may bore you but I hope it doesn't - Check him out and let me know what you think. He, at the very least, deserves our high respect for his crusadorial efforts to to preserve musical electronic design history and he is not too bad a Texas lick player either - God Bless Him he is a real Treasure. Cheers Alex the K.

The only thing I wish this amp had and they did different is a Standby Switch and move the power setting switch to the other side by the input jack or to the backside of the amp other than that this is the perfect amp for 90% of R&R from 1965 to 1980 when Marshall came out with the JCM 800.

I have seen tech reviews on this line of amp from what I have heard there are reliability issues with them due to materials and construction. With that said you can't expect the highest quality at a low cost. They do sound good for what you are paying. So if you're like myself you do the best you can with what you have to work with. Keep rocking mates!

You're correct there. The sv20 and sc20 are twice the price, but if you're not gigging (or not regularly) the origin series are a great option, for affordability. Loud too.

Got a 50 watt version head and it sounds great with any pedal you go with. We will see how long it lasts. 1 Watt is pretty damn loud and maxxed out gives you that AC/DC tone with no effects. It really reminds me of an unmodded JCM 800 from the 80s...love mine so far

I just got the amp. It sounds great. I was surprised how much I loved the clean channel. The thing that wasn't apparent from your review was how much the overdrive/distortion sound in your demo was a pedal and not specifically the amp. That said, I put a turbo rat in front of it and it sounds great. Surprising because I don't really like the rat. I've had it for 20 years and never use it and maybe now there's a reason to have it. The other thing is I chose the Origin 20 over the 50 because the low power switch was supposed to be a fraction of a watt. It's still very loud and I'll have to be careful at night. No possibility of natural overdrive, it will have to come from pedals.
@joshbarron1380
@joshbarron1380 7 ай бұрын
it has the overdrive knob you pull?
@merwinjm
@merwinjm 7 ай бұрын
@@joshbarron1380 There is a boost foot switch, but its not really an overdrive or channel swich. More like if you are about to play a solo and your guitar volume is already at 10, hit the boost, and you'll be a bit louder. I also use it when I switch to a guitar (like my Gretsch) that has lower output pickups. I've gotten to know the amp better since I commented, and you can play with the volume and gain to get a good overdrive, but it's still pretty loud for home use, even on the low power setting. For a while I used an attenuator, but recently, I dialed it back to a nice clean and use pedals for my distortion sounds. It's just more flexible for playing a variety of music.

I COULD HAVE BOUGHT A MARSHALL ALL TUBE HEAD FOR UNDER A THOUSAND!!! I always wanted the digitech Johnson millienium Amp because of its great before its time effects chip that changed the game...this amp was first introduced in 1989....They are solid state power section with 2 preamp tube for the gain channels...it really does a good Hot rod Plexi ...so I can add a o.d pedal..it's a combo 150 watts with 2 Celestine vintage 30's (just those two speakers made over 30years ago are worth 300usd) but seeing this Marshall Origin I may sell this combo and get the 50watt...it sounds sweet....

Got to try out the 5W combo version of this amp yesterday. Absolutely loved it, definitely gonna buy one soon. Originally I was planning to get new pickups (DiMarzio HS pickguard) for my Strat, but I've now decided that I'll go for the Marshall instead. It's only 20€ more than the pickups, and it sounded amazing. By the way, the Tilt knob is based on the idea of blending the channels on a Plexi.

Hey Elmo, I really love your channel. You serve up a lot of really good info about amps. I also love your playing. When you do a demo it's in the context of what someone would actually set up for actually playing a song. I have run across so many effects pedals demos that are totally worthless. The reviewers usually set things up in an extreme condition. Their sound is so far away from anything that a guitarist would ever use in a live setting. I just can't tell if a chorus pedal might be something I want to buy when the only thing I hear is the thing turned all the way up for each parameter. ugh... Yes, most demos sound like really bad sci fi movie soundtracks from the 60's. As for the Marshall Origin 50, I tried one out at Guitar Center. It was cool. But at the same time I can see the corners that Marshall cut on the build quality of the box. But, it's certainly not a disappointment or anything. It's what you get for that price. I ended up going with a Mesa Boogie Fillmore 50. I do love it. But....it cost 3THREE TIMES AS MUCH and isn't really a fair comparison. Over the years I have tried to get into Marshall but it just hasn't clicked yet. I do like their sound. Those Plexi's are something special. The JCM 800's are also fabulous. I also think that their new 20 watt versions that are made in England are very cool too. Thank you again for the great reviews. Do you ever review Mesa stuff? Well, keep up the great work. peace!

Love my two 1959 SLP's reissue's and they suck peddles up ! Loud as hell ... Oh if you take a Rockman Head Phone amp into both heads stereo .. it's a game changer !

The Tilt control is like jumping the channels on an old Plexi and instead of adjusting the two volumes for the Normal and Bright channels you have a mix control between the two. It seems it sounds different than a plexi, though. More bright and cleaner.

Thanks for the reply! An A/B test with the 1987x would be revealing!!! By the way, 1987x is still in production, it is listed in the Marshall site under the Vintage Reissues section and the SLP100 Plexi under the Handwired section. The prices are far away than the Origin's, though!

Yeah. Just had a look, and it seems it still is. I wonder where I got the impression it isn't... Seems it's almost 4 times the price on Amazon.

Nice review Elmo! Always wanted a Marshall tube amp, but as you know I'm not much of a guitarist, so I invested in DW's instead. Kidding aside, this thing seems awesome for the money, so I may have to revisit that thought. Now, I just need one of those t-shirts, but with "drums" on it instead. ;^)
