Such a pivotal moment in the series. Raynor spends his earlier cutscenes slipping away into the distance, especially fading into alcoholism. The burden of the visions Zeratul gave him is too much to handle. But as soon as he hears Tychus trying to talk shit on his name, he snaps out of it, and becomes the strong and rhetorically effective leader that everyone knows him to be. This isn't my favorite cutscene (especially with some of the ones in LOTV), but it is a damn good one that deserves every ounce of praise it gets.

You know, when I started playing the game, Raynor(having played Brood Wars to, like, 2/3 of the way) seemed to me like that lame, over-used, generic "Good Guy Hero". But as I went down the campaign line, he gradually got more complicated and more interesting... And then came this scene. And that is where shit got real good and qualitative. Man, that is one good game, scenario and character development. And god DAMN does Raynor deserve respect :3
@UnitDCCXXXI8 жыл бұрын
+s3dchr Too bad they spit-shine all of his morally grey moments to make him appear like a hero anyway and so rationalize his flaws away, and make two of the best characters from the original games into mindless tyrants. WoL frankly sucked compared to previous titles and expanded universe stories. I'm glad the games improved on character development in HotS and LotV. I still hated Mengsk in HotS, but Amon is slightly more interesting if you pay attention to his motives. His dumbest appearance, of course, was also in Wings, where he comes off as a simple "For the Evulz" powermonger. He's a nihilist who believes all life is suffering in Legacy, so while he starts sounding like a broken record very quickly, at least his motives make sense. His "Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds" moment in the Epilogue wasn't too bad, either, since it raises a lot of questions about the morality of the Infinite Cycle.
@ConradKurze4 жыл бұрын
dude, that's just bullshit. They made Raynor just another spaghetti western hero. A retired knight in shiny armor. I mean it's not bad. But sooo cliche. He was a bald cynical cutthroat, who settled for a sheriff job in 1st SC.
@fulldisclosureiamamonster27863 жыл бұрын
@@ConradKurze He wasn't bald, cynical, nor a sheriff in SC1. Original comment had it right, Jim wasn't really as fleshed out as Tassadar or the Overmind in the original game. He didn't really have a character at all beyond being a generic good guy human and he doesn't really seem to be affected by the deaths of people under his command or his morally grey companions whatsoever (it's at least a little understandable with Kerrigan; most people don't realize that the Raynor/Kerrigan romance had actually been an idea since SC1, but it got cut out during development so they only seem like comrades and in Brood War Jimmy ended up looking like he was just stupidly trusting. It was more than a little strange that they retconned said romance into being canon again in SC2, but I digress). Either way, his character is pretty cliche. But at least he's a cliche with depth in SC2. Robert Clotworthy also gets to show his range as a VA compared to when he was just confident leader man 90% of the time in SC1.
@ConradKurze3 жыл бұрын
@@fulldisclosureiamamonster2786 He was a marshall at the small Mar Sara colony. Become that as a result of a deal with the Confederacy, to pardon him. Which i see as pretty close to the sheriff, also he was called that several times i think. Ok, maby not cynical, but sarcastic. At the apperance, check again the old Starcraft icon, he was balding, shaved short and with monobrow. Not to meantion completely different face features. It's quite obvious thet they not just changed, but PG13 polished his appearance in the S2, as well as every other design and game aspect. Though i agree with last thesis, that he became just a deeper cliche in the sequel. Which is not a good thing IMO, but easier to sell to kids i guess.

Huge firefly fan, just recently played starcraft 2, this whole campain is EXACTLY like Firefly, the soundtrack has many taken from firefly. I mean all I see is Jayne and Mal going at it. Its firefly with a hint of blizzard and instead of a dozen people the missions deal with hundreds, so the storyline is a little closer to war than post-war. Matt is like a combo of zoey and simon. Obviously in the girl is inara, tosh is like the mercenary in the show and the agent in the movie and river combo.

13 years later and I'm looking at this scene again. 0:27 Tychus might have been drunk, but now that we know what happens at the end, it's clear that he has a bit of clarity in his head, and a really pained expression reflected in that booze, because he knows what'll happen on Char. He wants to beg Jim not to go there. He wants to convince everyone that it's not a good idea, because he doesn't want to be the one to kill Kerrigan and ruin his friendship with Jim. And so, in order to look the least suspicious, he puts on a show and causes chaos, spouting things that would turn people against Raynor. ...Sadly, none of it worked, and he could only brace himself for what happens. Now that the decision's been made after the bar brawl... he has no choice but to go through and follow Raynor to the end.
