We already know how the algorithms of platform capitalism and AI models can be tools of mass manipulation for companies, movements, governments and other political actors that use them to reinforce biases, spread misinformation and enable new forms of surveillance and mass control. The question, then, is whether we can reverse the process and gaslight AI. A lot can be learned from the history of deliberate interventions in complex algorithmic systems: what are their weaknesses, what skills are needed and how we can force AI to change its worldview before it transforms ours.
