How lovely... how absolutely lovely. Martha's brilliance looks so totally effortless one forgets the music is difficult... and Barenboim as ever is fabulous. For those who don't know Spanish, what Barenboim says before the encore is "This isn't really an encore -- it's a tribute to Pia Sebastiani, who was a great figure in Argentinian music, who recently passed away. She heard us play this last year and particularly loved this piece, so we're going to play it -- the Bailecito (little dance) by Guastavino -- in her memory, and we will ask you not to clap at the end so we can just go away with the thought of her." How touching!

Martha stated that she wanted to become a doctor instead of becoming a superlative pianist ...I cannot imagine the world of music being denied of Martha`s performances , if as a doctor she would have been the equal the pianist she became ...only a very small portion of the world`s population would know of her and would not be entertained by the her amazing talent , she made the right decision for the world ...pianist was the right choice.

I never understood why Beethoven didn't like this concert at all, which instead contains unforgettable pages and is very stylistically compact. He composed it at a difficult moment in his life - let's not forget that it is actually the first concetto for piano and orchestra that he composed - and perhaps it reminded him of that unhappy period. Then, in Martha's hands it acquires an incredible brilliance and depth. And Baremboim takes perfect tempos to highlight the various melodic ideas as well as the usual care and refinement of the "colors" and of the sound itself. How they both do it is a miracle. And then 3 miracles: Beethoven and the two interpreters. Orchestra is amazing.

This is not the first concerto Beethoven composed. The concerto in E-flat WoO. 4 (known as concerto "No. 0") was composed some years earlier, but never published.

Bravo, Martha, Daniel, and the Orchestra......Daniel gives his musicians the responsibility of listening to each other and Martha.......he stays out of the way...doesn't put on a big show.....but brings out the best in the orchestra........that is a maestro. The encore performance........goes way back when they performed as child prodigies growing up in Argentina.......Best of friends.....You will not probably hear a better two piano performance.......other than the Mozart from previous posts.

It’s only when you Beethoven played by Beethoven experts like this company that you can begin to comprehend the extent of his musical vision and, for example how daring his compositional structure is - how he goes way out on a limb to get what he hears and is not intimidated by convention. Barenboim and Argerich have known each other since they were children in Argentina, and they have remained close friends. Martha is one of the few musicians who is not intimidated by Barenboim, who can be an overbearing bully.
