Really, this is an useful and interesting interview, a great tool for my paper. Of course, she could be the new Hannah Arendt. Amazing her approach of human development and women!

23:01 - 35:16 Her feminist view on religion, especially in India. 35:16 - 39:14 Law as an avenue of social change for feminism in America vs India. 39:14 - 44:41 Freedom of religion in USA. Separation of church and state doesn't necessarily mean religion is being marginalised in the social sphere.."Any (school) prayer you choose is going to include some and exclude others." We should talk of equality, not separation."We don't want to have a state which burdens religion...or favours religion."

She is pretty amazing. I'm going to add her to my list of people I admire hehe. It was very interesting what she said about the separation of church and state, and I think it is important to reiterate that the separation is not meant to marginalize religion, but rather to ensure fairness. Thanks for posting these :)

@Johothebozo Perhaps she is, but I'm not sure what you mean by that. Is idealism always so bad? Have you seen that video with her and Bill Moyers on the Fragility of Goodness? Good stuff.

The level of intellect most comments show proves how detrimental the demise of the humanities actually is! Most comments show a blatant lack of the following skills which are cultivated in the humanities: being able to deal with something first, actually having a look at it and thinking!!! about it before dismissing it, being able to differentiate, being able to see something from a different perspective, having respect for other human beings.

looking at the comments, it strikes me as rather stark how much sexism, envy and prejudice there is. And then those points made: as if our world, our societies could be dealt with, organized, maintained sustainably, in a fair manner without people reflecting, adressing problems, getting to the bottom of things. Maybe one had better actually listening to what M. Nussbaum has to stay first instead of dismissing it out of hand.

@lilygalore you are the one who needs to listen to the video. Gandhi did NOT invent village councils. When she claims that Gandhi created village councils in India, Nussbaum shows that she did not make it on merit but is just an affirmative action beneficiary.

Kreisler nods his head way too compulsively, makes me suspicious he's thinking more about the next question than what she's saying

@noodoo19 I, personally, didn't get that impression from Kreisler during watching this interview. If, however, it is the case that he is "pleading for her to end her response so that he can actually have a purpose for being there", I'd be willing to bet he's just uncomfortable with the fact that a woman has more prestige in philosophy and, thus, more to say on these matters than he does...

I hope you've overcome your catty misandry by now. That said, thirteen years on, there's never been a more profitable time to vilify straight white men. I trust you were already well-trained, and are now taking full advantage.

Understanding of the reality without catholic faith is limited to limits of reason or even more. Faith in Jesus gives the believer share in God's reason. What about that?

does she really have to recite 1/2 a book to answer 1 question? kreisler's body language often seems to be pleading for her to end her response so that he can actually have a purpose for being there.

otoh, if nussbaum really converted to judaism, it proves that she believes in the one and only one god who has a p3-nis. what sort of intellect is that? she actually converted to judaism after comparing the religious texts and finding truth in the jewish texts?

Yes lets get distanced and unhappy here people. No woman no understand. All matter, allso that of tne mind can be summarised in a 4 degree calculation based on the possibility of some kind of mental euality not governed by mediocracy, but on perception/recall/energy evaluation. This all mouths out in bickery over scraps..

Gandhi did not introduce village councils! She is all fluff and explained the Mumbai attacks as Muslim angst due to persecution. OTOH, the Russian experts were accurate and provided details of factional feuds in terror groups. Nussbaum is a racist who claimed Hindus are violent because they are sexually frustrated. She suppresses the fact that Amartya Sen did not marry her. Knowing Sen closely does not make one an expert on India. She routinely uses conspiracy theories in her works on India!

OK, im into rasism, im into bigamy and irresponsibility, im from norway and yes im white. I have a brain, and brains, in the manner of compassionate thinking. Martha nussbaum is trying to legitimate feelings as a discoursive topic, and i feel that thats not a clerly delinated didactive topic in a mathematical or logical sense yet. I dont say that any approach, not even the materialistic approach to theory through economics, can be ruled out here. The dicourse between humans cant do that yet..

Ms. Martha is so wise and learned, a small amount of time spent harnessing the wild horses of the mind, at least on a verbal level would make her an even more powerful speaker, teacher. less is more, slow and steady winds the race, leave some emotional space for the imagination.
