I think it's nice that you explain the pedal setting but, it also important to show drummers how to set your bass drum by adjusting the drum spurs in the front of the bass drum. How high, how low the front end should be sitting off the ground. No one on you tube discusses this. Just saying. Good luck

I love these short tutorials you’ve been releasing lately! I’ve been watching your channel for a long time now and just sucked up everything like a sponge! But I just wanted to say these latest tips and questions being answered on these videos have basically helped me with the last few things I needed to figure out in order to increase my speed AND overall control of my double bass playing! I can now play at 260+ bpm very accurately with very little exertion or effort and for a very long time once I’m warmed up! I was a twitchy, tensed-up, sloppy mess anywhere above 200 bpm only a month or so ago and now I’m here thanks to what you’re doing...so I am forever grateful! I would join the academy if I could, but as things are right now it’s not in the cards. Sorry for the long rant, but thank you very much! You’re doing a lot of drummers around the world an amazing service and deserve a lot of praise haha!

what technique you use bro?
@aarondillon59864 жыл бұрын
Bashing Over Racing I basically use the same technique as Simon schilling or david diepold. I mainly apply the ankle technique as explained by marthyn, but I also make some use of the swivel technique, but that’s mostly to keep loose and in time when I’m doing higher tempo stuff. Lately though I’m finding that I’m swivelling less and less as I get more and more control with just the ankle technique itself and relying less and less on the swivel motion. I believe I was depending on the swivel a little too much, maybe even relying on it to produce some of the force in my strokes, but now that my ankles are more controlled I find myself only swivelling at really high speed and more just to keep time a little easier.

@@drumtechniqueacademy Cheers Marthyn. Finally I found the Pearl Eliminator Settings that work best for me.. beaters set to 75 degrees, drum throne low with thighs as shallow angle, 20mm short of full beater extension, springs medium loose, and then work through all four standard cams from hard to easy (red to white), between rehearsals. I just want to comfortably get to 184bpm so I can play Deliverance!

Hey, Marthyn. What you explain really helps me a lot! Thanks you so much! One thing that has not been covered yet is throne positioning. How to find the right distance for putting the throne (say, the center shaft of the throne) relative to the pedals and how to find the correct height of the throne? Could you please shed some light on that? Thanks again.

Throne height, and angle of your feet
@DrummerJez864 жыл бұрын
i'd love to see his thoughts. but what seems to work for me is sitting pretty high. legs have a downward angle.. not crazy but above level by a bit. angle of feet also not vertical. a bit foreward of the knee. you really have to experiment. but those 2 ideas are a good starting point

@Marthyn Is there any video or opinion on footboard height/angle? My Trick Pedal allows for footboard height adjustment relative to the beater angle. I’m a beginner and this alone creates a huge variation in the way the pedal can feel.

Just for my understanding: When using the speed setting you need triggers or a base drum mic, because you're not able to get enough volume? i.e. when playing on a accoustic set with no mics at all?

Hello Marthyn one of your students from North Carolina - Perfect - Just what I am currently working on. Using Pear Eliminators with the red cam, 45 degree beater angle at slightly under middle spring tension, easy fun playing speeds between 170 - 190 BPM. You answered my question go back to a 70 degree beater angel for more power, and probably lower my spring tension. What I really need is help at the freakin 140 - 150 range, gee help us with in between using leg and ankle technique. I suck at using swivel, technique and like the way you teach us how to use the ankle technique with out using a swivel at least for now. On your next tutorial help us with those in between leg / ankle technique if you could. Love your teaching style and thank for the awesome lessons.

Really instructive video! For me, after 26 years of practice, I've discovered that the most confortably setting is a power setting (beater near 60°) with a spring's tension between 90% and 100%. I play with double strokes technique but wanna try the ankle technic. Thx for your tips Marthyn ;)

Thanks for your tutorials. They are helping me improve immensely. The issue I've been having is getting an extra beat when I relax my calf muscle after contraction. Especially at slower tempos. Similar to heel toe double strokes but totally unintentional. I've found that switching to heel down for slower tempos is more comfortable but it causes lag in the transition. Any suggestions? Thanks again!

Hey there! Loved the explenation. One question. Besides all the throne height and positioning... what about the footboard height because never saw anything about that? For example I have the demon drives and i have set the footboard for standard position, beaters are at an 70-80 degree angle and I get this senastion of the pedal „throwing” the beater at the end of the swing Cheers from Poland!

One struggle that I have is to find settings (pedal and also seating position) that allow me to play fast double bass but also play more groove oriented stuff where doubles in the right foot are happening more frequently. For groove stuff I use the slide/moeller technique and I always found my playing to be inaccurate when everything is geared towards speed. For my single foot doubles to feel and sound good, I need the pedal to feel a bit heavier and not so feathery light but also buttery smooth. Is it just not possible to find a sweet spot for both speed and groove ? Or is the approach you show here definitely viable for "both worlds" ? I would love you input on this.

Great explanation! It would be great if you could cover the footboard settings too. I have a Pearl Eliminator P2002C pedal and as you know you can also move the heel forwards/backwards and you can adjust the footboard height. It would be great to know how to tune these properly. Thanks!

Marthyn, thanks for your incredible videos, you explain everything in so much detail, and that opened my eyes on how much mistakes I made! I watched your video about ankle technique a couple of days ago and realized that this could help me a lot, cause I'm struggling with mid tempo 140-190, there are days I could play theml and there are days I'm not, so I immediately run to practice it, but I should have watched this first, cause I have high spring tension, and my legs are so tired now after two days of work out, that I can't play anything at all. I'm pretty skinny guy, so I assume high spring tension is not what I need :) I will try again after couple days of break. And are you lefty and play the right-handed set-up? If that so, so do I, I'm lefty and I have also a couple of thoughts on how that could affect my playing. Trying to lead with the weak side is not the fastest way to master things :)

Hi Marthyn! Your videos have helped me out a lot with the ankle technique but got one question or an idea for a future video maybe?:) I mostly used to play acoustic but the last months I have only been practising double kick at a digital drum set which means I have only played with my new ankle technique on this. How big of a difference will it be when I switch over to an acoustic kick? I have a Roland KD-9 which seems to decently resemble the acoustic feel.

What about beater length/height? How do you balance it with spring tensions down angles? Will this work with double and triple strokes?
@jpadlero4 жыл бұрын
Silly question, does footboard height influence ankle technique? Also about footboard, the length changes the position of the foot? for example, if I'm using longboard pedals I should step forward or right in the middle as you recommend to shortboard pedals?

Hey I am having trouble with my slave pedal where it has less power than the main pedal I use pearl demon direct drive pedals and I heard there was barely any pedal lag at all but when I got them the left one just seemed to be really weird compared to the main (It could just be the weight of the drive shaft but I'm not sure)

Ok, cool video... But I Play with Heel Toe technique ... What setting do you recommend?
@wgerd984 жыл бұрын
Incase he doesn't answer, like he said about the ankle technique it is a "to each their own" kind of thing. Its best you experiment for yourself and find what works for you. But as far as what I have experienced and heard, max spring tension, medium to high footboard angle and 45° beater (adjust as necessary). Larger beater angle will give you more power but generally speaking the second stroke (toe) will not have as much power anyways so just trigger that shit
@wgerd984 жыл бұрын
Personally I use a larger beater angle than 45° but that is more for the sake of having balance and power when flat footing at mid tempos
@MW3BOT4 жыл бұрын
Depends if long board or short board. I have my beaters at 40 degrees,pedal board in the middle height,and about 80% spring tension. I am using tama speed cobras,so i have longboard pedals. I have tried max spring tension,and it makes it really hard to play slower tempos. As for short board pedals,i used them before i got the speed cobras. It was easier to max out the tension because my foot covered more of the pedal. Same beater angle a footboard height. This is my experience with my pedals playing double strokes. I play doubles from 140bpm to 280bpm
@wgerd984 жыл бұрын
@@MW3BOT do u play barefoot? I wear steel toe shoes and also have speed cobras. Because of this my feet would have too much weight to go that low on beater angle. In fact i recently switched the stock springs out for the heavy ones that come on dyna sync. I have that maxed and the pedal still is wayyyyy to light for me.

what about bass drum tuning. size of bass drum, muffling, unported vs ported vs no front head. that shit has a big effect on bounce back. it would be interesting scientifically. a just past wrinkle batter head will def rebound slower than a cranked head. but where is the happy medium that sounds good while giving decent rebound.

Wouldn't a bigger beater distance be better for speed since the spring will want to return alot more when playing fast, near the bass drum? Or is this just extra work and won't actually make you be able to play faster?
@robertsmiley65434 жыл бұрын
The reason why you move it closer for speed is because it means there's area to move through so it'll take less time to actually hit the bass drum. That's why in his other videos Marthyn talks about adding a bit of pressure from I believe your hipflexors when you go faster because it pushes the beater closer
@TheSlayerswe4 жыл бұрын
@@robertsmiley6543 Yes I know. So if you have a higher beater distance and use your hip flexors n to push down the pedal a bit and shorten the stroke, you the spring will be more "extended" or what you call it and so the pedal will want to return quicker. But I'm asking if this is actually something which will benefit you if you are playing max 270bpm or if it is just extra energy used.
