If Seagal does have a thyroid disorder I can sympathize with the weight issues. I lost half of my thyroid in 2016 (tumor in my neck that had grown into one lobe) and within just a few months I had put on 50lbs. I stabilized at about 70 over my usual weight and have been working on losing it since. 99% of my diet is vegetables and good proteins. The only sugars, carbs, etc. I have are the small amounts find in avocado and other healthy foods. I exercise every single day (weights and/or cardio) and have lost less than 20lbs in 18 months. It's a legit struggle.

You and Rokas are indelible within the Martial Arts community. I feel it goes beyond that. I respect people who are genuine, humble, truly compassionate and empathetic. You and Rokas have that. As human beings we judge, that's what people do. You first do it as a subconcious safety mechanism, more primal. Then you have those who do it to feel more content. Whatever that may be for them, go with the crowd or a self-esteem thing. You and Rokus both give an unbiased view and that goes back to being genuine people. I have seen all types of men and all types of things happen. Fought in Iraq and Afghanistan to another extreme of dealing with addiction and what that brings about. I am in recovery now and living a good life. I have always had martial arts in my life and can accredited my values and moral code to that, even before joining the military. My father was a great teacher and is back at it, which is awesome. Thanks , Jesse ! I like the way you are talking behind someone whom you met, i.e. Steven Seagal. One should not blame the other whom we have met and experienced the courtesy discussion, especially in the public. I give you my heart. You are the realest martial artist ever. - I have seen a lot but never talked with commentators being the keyboard fighters who have never ever proven their own skills. I do not know if Seagal is a real martial man in the arena; but I believe he is a tough guy in a street fight because of his size and weight. I myself have experienced some accidental street fights. They are much different from a fight on rules, including MMA/UFC having very less rules. For instance, one will never know the poor floor condition (slope with some natural obstacles) can be the unexpected weapon, when fighting. An experienced Muay Thai fighter can be the loser in their street fight.

There's a lot of good comments here pointing out the flaws in defending Seagal, one that bothers me a lot that I haven't seen is the idea that he just had a hard time pulling his punches with stuntmen. If someone as tough as Gene LeBell is calling you out for beating up on your stunt team, you're doing something wrong. I would be really careful with Seagal. You guys are honest and forthright and it is easy to be taken in by a professional conman. Seagal is problematic in a great many ways and I'd hate to see you guys pulled into it. It feels a little propaganda-esque these videos. He's trying to present himself as something he's not. I like Jesse but I definitely had some issues with some things he said about Seagal. That "I don't care what you do with your private life" is understandable but when you are talking about abuse and rape, that's another thing. Traditional jujutsu does go to the ground, just like HEMA with their dagger combatives. Samurai armour is not so heavy it would impede you from getting up off the ground. You can easily run in well fitted samurai armour, hell, you can run in well fitting plate armour. I knew a woman who would run five kms in her plate armour.

About the bjj part I believe his criticism is about pulling guard strategies being a thing instead of "oh shit I have to guard against the top opponent". Even so, my master (he trains people for both pure BJJ and for MMA) would answer that you need to train bjj guard, especially half-guard, if you want to be able to knockout people efficiently when they are guarding against you.

What you also have to be careful with is assuming that whatever a woman says happened must be true. Seagal has never been proven of doing anything that anybody knows of. And there's 2 very recent examples of what happens when the believe women thing goes a bit too far. You have people like Johnny Depp and Marilyn Manson suffering because of accusers who can't keep stories straight and are lying all the time.

Agreed. I don't know a lot about Segal so I wouldn't make a judgment on him publicly, but his reputation really precedes him in reliable sources and very consistently. "We are all not perfect" is powerful phrase that teaches a great lesson of humanity, but it's very reckless to throw it around with people you, admittedly, don't know much about outside of your project with him.

Narcissists are able to stay in character for much longer than a couple of hours. Having met and worked for seagull back in the 90's, I was able to see that he was/is a con man. His arrogance was always present. This young martial artist seems sincere about seagull, but I believe he got conned. My Sensei lived in Japan during the same period of time as when seagull was there. The martial arts community was skeptical, at best, of seagull back then. This young man should do a bit more probing into seagull. seagull is not a good man.

What are you talking about lol, His skills were highly sought after in Japan in the 70s and 80s. He completely revamped Tenshin Dojo and many world class black belts studied with him. Haruo Matsuoka and Larry Reynosa are both world class students of his. Too many Aikido elitists didn't even know how to apply it in real combat, yet all of Seagal's black belts were always well versed in practical application.

Leaving aside rumor, accusations and hearsay Steven Seagal publically exhibited/exhibits certain behaviour and views that I strongly disagree with. Personally I would go so far, that they should disqualify him from getting any promotional coverage. That said I do not know the man and I can not judge him as a person. From a martial art point of view I want to add, that applying an excessive amount of force during training is not a problem of power or built (in my experience). It's either a lack of control or a concious decision.

That is because your experience, is within the Lower Levels of Expression. When you learn and master higher level "Internal" arts methods... its very easy to accidentally injure an OP. I was doing a demo with an MMA fighter. My one arm, against his two (bare fisted). We agreed on Medium levels of power, to keep things relatively "Safe". After a few min. of not being able to land anything on me... he got Embarrassed and Angered... and amped up to full speed, full power, with true intent to harm. Problem is... you cant "SEE" power. Power is only "Felt"... and so by that time... its way too late. He tried a high hook to low gut-punch combination. I easily swatted the hook away, then stepped back while dropping my arm into the path of his full force strike. I had chose to only use about a 10% level arm Deflection tech. That would not have caused much more than a mild bruise, as medium levels.. at best. However, because he used his full potentials... it nearly shattered his wristbone. The injury swelled up nearly double in size, and he was in great pains for many days to follow. That said, he was seriously impressed, after I showed his how and what went down. I had to explain it to him... because he was standing there wondering how the heck that I was not curled up on the ground, in tears. You see, the arm deflection is not just performed with the arm. Its actually a whole body-mass tech. So, It was essentially like trying to strike a falling 180 lbs metal bar, with all of your might. As for your decision to Cancel someone, based on accusations... Look no further than Johnny Depp Vs Amber Heard. She manipulated him from the start... trashed his reputation, and tried to Ruin him with false allegations. She was such a bad Liar, that the Jury (and everyone else) were easily able to see through her BS... but... many other females are far more cunning, and thus... far more destructive. Weather or not Seagal is an actual abuser... I could not tell you (he might very well be). But Im not going to believe anyones words on the matter, without actual concrete evidence. Our country was founding on "Innocent, before being proven Guilty", and for good reasons. As for Politics, there are many sides that are hidden from the general Lemmings... and a corrupted Mass Media machine... that has been PROVEN to spout Propaganda and LIES, for many many decades, spanning many many historical events. I'm really worried this is one of those instances where you begin to idolize someone just because they are famous and nice to you. When there are dozens of accounts on him being a horrible person to the point of possible child sex trafficking, a few anecdotal takes trying to justify him kind of falls flat. Well… I have met stuntmen and stunt coordinators that that have said similar things about Seagal: he hits the stuntmen when he doesn’t need to. For example, when someone gets ‘punched’ in the face for film, it’s the the illusion of getting punched when a fist crosses the sight path of the camera and the target, and the reaction of the person being ‘hit’ is what sells the action - no actual contact is needed. Seagal would actually hit the stunt performer. Yes, on rare occasions, contact is used, and it is done knowingly. However, Seagal would make contact when there was none planned in the choreography. It was never chalked up to be an accident, and the stunt performers were basically told to suck it up or get off the set.

Way you explain it seems like he was just bad at his job (being an actor not a Aikido full speed demonstrator) and that the studio found more value in their high paid star then the regular people who are the stuntmen (the actual real Heroes) so they had to deal with it and say nothing.... Any trained practitioner can tell when someone new is resisting in a dangerous way, and the correct thing to do is back off and not train that technique until they understand the danger. I watched Jesse's video before I saw this one. Since I follow both channels, I was glad to see the shared collaboration between martial artists. I would agree entirely with Jesse's comments about being interested only in the Martial Artist side of Sensei Segal. Being a life-long martial artist myself, I can appreciate, admire and learn from Sensei Segal's Aikido\Aiki-jitsu\etc. lessons, without necessarily agreeing with any other aspects of his life. Keep up the sharing\collaboration between the different Martial Arts disciplines ... it is a life-long pursuit but well worth it!

First of all I highly respect your work and since I am practicing Aikijutsu myself, I find it very informative too. But the latest news that I heard about Seagal, is that he‘s now off to film a sort of propaganda documentary about the russian side of the Ukraine conflict. Now I really understand the thing about not being interested in someones political pov, but we cannot look away from actions like this. As a martial artist who is so devoted to a peace bringing martial art, reinvented after the massive destruction in Japan after WW2, this takes away all my respect for Seagal. There are many many innocent people dying in this conflict. Supporting war is a crime in my eyes. As I said Rokas and Jesse I really admire your work and content and don‘t want to blame you at all, but since you are Europeans and have a responsibility as content creators and martial artists too, I needed to say this. Edit: Besides that multiple women accused Seagal of sexual harassment or assault. There were several lawsuits too.

Well, I´ve seen the quickness of Mr. Seagal in the clip with Jessie and it impressed me, that an (elder) man of his age and weight can perform such tasks. My impression is that he hits like a bulldozer when he is pushed to do so, and I guess that his fighting style and weight are exactly coordinated with each other. Seagal is no fighter for rounds, but one who could finish an unwary opponent within seconds. Don´t know if he´s even just one of the best fighters out there, but he is definitely no one I want to mess with. I´m 52 by now, and my experience tells me, that a man who has the mental ability to seriously injure or even kill people (that is to say a man with killer instinct) is in fact dangerous as hell, and will be superior to most if not all regular martial artists who never had to shed blood in a confrontation. Even if this man doesn´t know any martial art himself. As far as I´m able to judge Mr. Seagal from here he is absolutely able to physically hurt sb. And he is (at least) a routine martial artist on top of that. And that´s my personal definition of being "dangerous".

This should be important for Rokas - since the first video I mentioned - the issue is not Aikido, the issue is how you perform. There are several styles of Aikido, some generate more sloppy techniques than others, but the bottom line is: that it's your responsibility to be critical and to improve your technique, despite the style you're learning or training on.

Steven Seagal is completely legit. His movies are definitely over-exaggerated for the action movie crowd and I highly doubt he worked for the CIA like he claims but in terms of his actual martial arts ability, he's as genuine as they get, probably the greatest American Aikido practitioner of all time. Would his techniques translate well in modern day MMA/UFC? Probably not, but when he was in his physical prime he would absolutely hold his own in a fight with most people. Especially given how his style of Aikido is more brutal and direct rather than the softer modern style you see today. Also his first five movies are still great, just ignore the rest.

I worked with him in China when he was shooting a movie with Tyson. Him and Tyson never fought, it was always the actor fighting the stunt double of the other actor ( for ego reason). Fun fact: samurai and also knights did go to the ground, because their armor was very effective and if you had only a sword or even a spear, it was really difficult or sometimes even impossible to hurt the samurai or knight, so they grappled him, took a dagger and went staby-staby to the armors weakspots (eyes, armpits, neck, etc.). So yes, they definitely went to the ground. 👍

Yes, but for exactly that reason, that staby- staby to weakspots is alot easier on the ground, they most often tried not to go to the ground themselves. A standing and moving knight that can threaten with his primary weapon and keep foes at distance is really hard to hurt but once you go to the ground you can easily be dogpiled by 2 or more guys and will potentially be killed or incapacitated. I dont know about Samurai but for european knights there are alot of incentives to not fall down. I believe there were instances where they had surrounded armored fighters and were unable to inflict damage on them until the knight was too tired to keep his arms up and surrendered. If that dude falls to the gound it wont take that long no matter what techniques he knows.

I know more about HEMA than traditional Japanese martial arts, but the goal was never to go to the ground like in BJJ in armored fighting. You’d never pull guard. The techniques resembled wrestling or Judo more, with takedowns and maintaining top position to use a dagger. Now of course that means one of them had to be in bottom position, but the treatises about armored fighting have a lot more to say about stand up grappling/clinching than on the ground.

In Medieval combat, we know of ground fighting not only from many detailed accounts, we know that people perceived it as highly important and we have manuals teaching Medieval combat grappling. Daggers play OF COURSE a big part of that sort of grappling. They also focused on completely unarmed grappling. So, would BJJ be a complete representation of the grappling that knights/samurai might have been training for? No, of course it is not complete. It is a grappling art and that alone makes it "incomplete". It just focuses on one aspect for means of specialization. They would also train swordfighting by just focusing on swordfighting. Because modular training works better. In other sessions, you do integrative training. Bruce Lee said he fears the man who trained one kick 10,000 times, not the man trained 10,000 kicks once. That doesn't mean that one kick is sufficient or that there isn't a benefit to knowing more than one kick, it means that he values mastery of a skill over quantity. That is something you achieve by having modular training with a narrow focus.

There are limits to overlooking someone's politics. Seagal filmed a propaganda clip for the Russian government inside occupied Ukraine, specifically aimed at backing Moscow's version of an incident that killed many Ukrainian prisoners of war. Now, even if you believe Moscow's version, it is fair to ask what Seagal was doing, getting shipped into an illegally occupied territory in order to then read from a script written by the Russians. Is that brave, heroic, independent, in any way? Or is it pathetic fealty towards a powerful state that he somehow decided to do business with? I think it's pretty clear it's the latter, and it's hard to see any honour in such behaviour. Therefore, I would advise any person doing decent content online to drop Seagal. This is certainly no time to lend him any kind of credibility.

absolute nonsense. People put on different personas for 8h a day regularly. It's really damn normal. Actors are even better at it because it's their job. He's been practicing his persona his whole life. It's effortless for him. With his wife or kids, he will not be using his public persona. You don't know him because you met him for a conversation.

It's become a cool trend to make fun off or put down Steven Seagal. People just say whatever these days with nothing to back it up, evidence. Very sad world we live in where, the ones that have the most viewers get to say what is true.
