As a guy in a wheelchair, I've learned to adapt. Out of very real experience of being assaulted in a wheelchair this theory works. Because of our height in a chair, the weight of the chair and using its breaks to best effect. Remember that any aggressor has to lean in to you. You have the advantage of balance. Use their clothing, your knowledge of the chair. It's easy to bring an able bodied person to ground. Remember that strength and aggression is all important. Never be defensive without it. If someone takes your chair from behind, break the left wheel and hard left this will break their grip. All the best brother keep strong

Theirs this girl at our dojo who’s deaf & none of speak a lick of sign language but somehow we all make it work & she’s a pretty good martial artist & has no issue sparring & is always friendly. Martial Art is something special man, it’s the language of the body.

It really is. There are some things that transcend human cultures over millenia and two of the most prominent are dancing and wrestling. It's something we just inherently understand and share. And just like spoken language, dancing and wrestling have their own variations and rules depending on the people practicing them. If you suddenly met someone who lives on the other side of the planet, you could easily bond over dancing or grappling with each other.

That was really inspiring. I've had End Stage Renal Failure since I was 4 (I'm 30 now) and in that 26 years I've had Caemo therapy, 18 years of dialysis, 2 strokes, 2 heart attacks, Epilepsy a dislocated hip & 2 kidney transplants. There's no cure for my illness but I choose to stay possitve every day and fullfill as many dreams that I can. Sure there are things I can't do, but I embrace the things I can do. For example.. as a child I always wanted to learn karate and Kung Fu and be this amazing MMA... But due to poor health, I couldn't. However I still got to the gym, did the excerises I was able to do AND as it turns out.. I'm a natural boxer, which I love! & It totally surprised me because that wasn't even something I pictured myself learning. Some people in this world just don't see what they have, they don't realise the gift of life that was given, so they waste it by using drugs, smoking, drinking, eating etc.. those people are the ones that "live to die" where others who can appreciate it are "dying to live" like me. Don't see failure around you, see achievements that can be met with determination, see how precious it is if your healthy, because others don't have that luxury. "No matter how bad your life may seem there's always someone out there whose got it worse". If you're stuck inside your head on a loop, for example, always telling yourself you're going to start getting fit tomorrow, or stop smoking, or go back to college, or get a job and so on, don't think it anymore, life's TOO SHORT just start, start now, just do it, begin your life, before you wake up one day with so much regret, because I'm telling you, regrets the worst, because we can't go back in time and change it. Love to everyone! Be happy! Ramsey, love your videos, think your great! Bree.

I have been in and out of a wheelchair since 2012. I have cauda equina syndrome and severe neuropathic pain and neuro related loss of sensation/movement etc. For me the best thing I have found is Systema, although I'm not saying that necessarily from a combat or fighting perspective, I say it more from a psychological perspective as you can learn a lot about reading situations and the Intent of an individual before anything happens and then it teaches you to calm and control your own body and mind. Now, translate that into your daily life as a disabled person. You can use these methods in your everyday life. I certainly have, especially when it comes to pain management. I'm not saying that a breathing exercise will be more effective than an opioid but in the short term when you are trying to do the daily things that are so easy for the able bodied yet are a challenge to us, this combined with the focus you will learn will be a great addition to your life. Moving on to the combat side of things I have found that Systema is very versatile and it sort of becomes your own art. I have to work around my shortcomings but I can still use other techniques to get out of the situation before it develops into the areas of my weaknesses. As Ramsey so rightly says, focus on what you can do. Also there are plenty of videos showing clothing as improvised weapons and with my Systema hat on I'm already thinking of ways to use the wheelchair as a weapon in its own right. When I'm able to get out of bed next time I'm going to experiment with this myself. I hope all of what I said makes sense (I've got a lot of Oramorph and Diazepam on board right now lol) and that you find something that suits you, I wish you all the best and relief from any pain should you have any.

I have CP myself and it effects my legs. I can walk using forearm crutches though I cant say that our situations are similar but as I am in a wheelchair for long trips or just in a chair a lot I have thought about similar things. this is why I love Martial Arts training. when I get into a place of training we are all working toward the same goal of self improvement and we all must struggle to inch towards it. I can speak from personal experience when I say that if he shows up determined to try he will find people that will help him achieve his goals. Nobody does anything exactly like the textbooks and so even the most healthy and able bodied people need to modify things at times. I feel completely insane for wanting to even learn Martial Arts sometimes but what a rush even the smallest amount of success is. If you are worried about your legs being weak and vulnerable keep that in mind and give them a reason to worry about your arms.

I was really worried about the large and extremely fast growing homeless population in my city so I found a jujitsu teacher who was willing to help by giving me private lessons!!!! Now I am more aware of my scrounging as well as getting a new scooter was I'm preparing things to fit some weaponry like bear 🐻 mace jujitsu bamboo fighting stick as well as a hidden surprise if all else fails!!! I may look helpless but...!! Surprise 😮

He needs to learn upper body grappling. And then incorporate that with chokes. In this sense I actually believe that GI jui jitsu will help because it incorporates clothing as a weapon. If he can grab hold of someone's shirt and maneuver around their head/neck and try to hold on tight and learn a good squeeze and that could go a long way for someone who couldn't use their legs.

"Whether you think you can, or you think you cannot, you are right."-Henry Ford I must've seen this video before. Because when I clicked on it, it started over halfway through. To anyone reading this, your only limitations are the ones you put on yourself. I have been practicing kenpo and Eskrima for almost 4 years now. I, like this guy, use a manual wheelchair and have no use of my legs. Now I am a 2nd degree brown belt. Was it hard? Hell yes! Do I struggle sometimes to make it work? Also yes. Your determination and willpower will take you wherever you need to go in life. No matter your "limitations". Thank you for this video, Ramsey.

I would maximize my self defense like this: Really powerful dog as assist. Projectile primary weapon(gun and pepperspray). Flinging stick eith reach based weapon as secondary(telescoping stick). Martial art of choice would be brazilian jiujits with emphasis on escapes from bad positions and getting the headlock.

Depending on the day, I'm either a rollator or wheelchair user. I adore dogs but have had a few close encounters with them while I was in my own space, minding my own business. Not cool. So I've been thinking about the specific things I'd focus on if I were actually attacked. I feel like I need to have a mental checklist ready. Since you mentioned a helper dog (that would be so nice, but not possible for me!), do you have any thoughts?

But to be in a wheelchair you have to overcome so much more when it all at the end of the day is to stay fit and have fun. Always wanted to learn it and I believe there just might be a school in my area! Look guys anyone can do martial arts! No matter how messed up you are. Its really all about the mind! Make a commitment to your instructor and yourself! Burn the bridge! Set a goal and work toward it bit by bit! Go to glass every workout! All you need to do is show up, walk thru the door and your instructor will take care of the rest, that's his job, yours is to show up! Its really that simple! Absorb what is useful, Discard what is not, Add what is uniquely your own.” exactly like bruce said, what you CAN do, i used to get agitated cuz i couldn't do very good high kicks, like i could do a decent round house, but i couldn't get most over kicks above abdominal or sometimes chest level give or take, then i realized, it didn't matter, why obsess over it, so i focused on knees, low and mid ranged kicks and now i can front snap the face and sometimes round house to the face, but why worry as much about kicking to the face when i have fists and elbows for that, good advice ramsey, i'd also say study some boxing and maybe some form of throwing if possible, since it could help with keeping people from putting you out of your chair and yeah, carry a weapon, could something as simple as a pair of sticks, study some eskrima, and pack a couple short sticks or pair of compact rods if legal in your area, i mean, even my old sensei would tell us find any advantage we could, if they where bigger and stronger and you didn't think you could take them in a fair fight don't fight fair, and since your can't use your legs make up for it with some sort of weapon advantage, but i'm not a teacher so take everything i say with a grain of salt, or, a can, i dunno XD good vid ramsey

I feel like for the large majority of people with physical impairments, wrestling seems to be the best, if not at least most easily accessible option. Loss of legs naturally impacts your ability to grapple but, honestly, if some goon attacks a disabled person, how many of them would expect said person to be able to twist and snap one of their limbs like a twig? not many. So how many would be prepared for that? Not many.

perhaps the most rewarding thing in life is to develop something brand new, to do something that hasn't been done before, that others had not thought of and especially if it is thought of as impossible. There are not many things like this left in the world that the average person can achieve, most things have been done before. But if a fighting style that works without having functioning legs has not been yet developed, you should really see it as a blessing. Because you get to experiment, explore and find your own path. It is likely to be the most satisfying thing you will ever do, and something you will be remembered by after you are gone. As for practical tips, the same self defense advice for able bodied people is even more important. Which is to avoid danger in the first place. Learn how to recognise problems before they arise and dissipate them. Fighting is a very unpredictable thing in the street. The kind of people that would attack you would take you by surprise, attack in numbers and think nothing of using a weapon. There is no "honour" in Streetfighting / violence. It is about hurting someone and taking something from them. It would be unadvisable for even an able bodied and we'll trained martial artist to fight attackers in the street. It is just a dumb thing to do. But even worse if you are in a wheelchair. So avoid the danger at all costs, travel with another person where possible and do have weapons on you. If guns are legal have one. If they are not equip yourself with what is legal. If you are somewhere like the UK where neither knives nor knuckle dusters are legal. Improvise something that can fit on your wheelchair like a short police baton and use that. But also remember that if you are on the ground and you hit someone, they are likely to stomp you without mercy. So be prepared mentally and physically for that scenario.

Hey Ramsey I think this could be a good topic for a video if you haven’t made one already: I believe carrying a firearm to protect yourself is the best self defense tool. It’s the great equalizer. You’ve talked before about how size and strength alone can make a huge difference in combat sports. Literally anyone can be physically overpowered by a bigger more muscular man but this applies especially to weaker people ie women, elderly disabled etc.. A gun will level the playing field. Not to mention that single pull of the trigger means death which can ward of potential danger. For anyone serious about self defense I’d advocate concealed carry with proper firearm training supplemented with some level of physical preparedness like martial arts. (btw it takes a week to learn gun skill compared to the years it takes to master a martial art) What’s your opinion? Do you think if people are truly serious about protecting themselves they should purchase a gun & receive the necessary training?

A friend of mine learned to walk on crutches, since a shot in his back rendered his legs useless. If you attack him in his wheelchair, he will hurl one of them at you. Rather, to give you a fair chance, than to hurt you. I strongly recommend dodging the crutch and RUUUN! Just don't be in proximity while he is doing his flankirovka thing with the other crutch. Or you might want to listen to Ramsey, saying: “We are one family!” and instead offer him some help. For instance, he cannot carry his wheelchair while climbing stairs.

I'm in a wheelchair I never always used to be just arthritis, I have disproportionate upper body strength and what I didn't realise is watching WWF as a kid and being a fan of UFC since 96 grappling when applied with violent intent works basically no matter what it is you're trying to achieve I've done ken shamrock ankle locks with an anaconda tight grip a version of Perry Saturn's rings of Saturn damn near pulled the guys shoulder, guelletines when you're built like a 5'1 bulldog headlocks if you trap the arms underneath are disgustingly effective. Turns out my street fighting was just crippled BJJ all along lmao my mentality is always I want it more than you.

Best defense is your "height" from the seated position. You can duck.... pull out your arm rest and use it as a tool for blocking, dodging, even grabbing or hitting. If you have limited leg movements like you say you have a mental advantage. People see wheelchair and think paralyzed. Steel-toed shoe to the shin when they're not thinking you got a move. That's more street fighting than actually martial arts. But yeah. Don't do any of this on the fly. You need to practice practice practice. When all else fails, get a weapon like he says.

A less serious disability but Howard Winstone managed to take the World Featherweight boxing title in 1968 even though he'd lost three fingertips on his right hand and so could barely make a fist with it.

Thank you for this video.Limitations really evolve a martial art,for eg boxers limited to only hands,karate/tkd fighters limited to only points. It is applicable to life.Good luck on your journey.

Self defense is hard enough for people with healthy legs. Without legs use, running away is not an option. Wrestling would work, but only in very limited circumstances. Range is a huge problem. The only logical solution seems to be a gun. It has range and would hugely deter anyone trying to mess with you if they know you're carrying.

If you're missing legs, pray you live in the United States where you can arm yourself with not just guns but knives, batons etc. as well for self-defence. I cant imagine being a wheelchair bound person in most other 1stworld countries (like here in Aus) where that shit is outright banned let alone banned for self defence.... I mean jiu-jitsu is your best bet, but I guess other than that, try not to end up in sketchy neighbourhoods? Prevention is king afterall.

nononono dont focus on what you can do do bjj leglocks? tapping? wtf nope i would rly like to know how bjj would be without feeling my legs, my favorite submission move the triangle would even be possible by using hands correctly, i think that has potential of being an entirely new art over all its art its fluid there is no equation to that stuff and yea, i need to actually watch the video before i write a comment because its the exactly same now that i finished the video, but rly nice seeing that our opinions are the same after all ramsey lol

You could have skipped 9/10ths of that by skipping to the part where you said "Get a weapon, learn how to use it, be prepared for the consequences of using it." If you are confined to a wheel chair, and in such a bad situation that people would consider attacking you despite the fact that you are in a wheel chair, they will be unlikely to "fight fair" or even unarmed. Fuck that and fuck them. Go armed, and don't hesitate to use massively overwhelming force. Keep it legal if possible.

Wow!!!!someone who understands. I'm actually finishing before i start. So so tired of so-called tough guys who want to hit each other. I was beaten up in psychiatric facility (I am severely autistic and have a seizure disorder ended up in one nice to beat up a brother when they are hurting and this macho ego buster RAN the asylum ). This is a SPIRITUAL thing not some wacko cult, you might. I was loved in my karate (I had to learn wiht children because honestly--he yes he is in his 90s! (Oooo an old man!!! yes rascals your degrees are PHONY Right now the same sort of guys (oooh would so love to have my "pet service dog" under my seat so I'm getting an amazon harness--- your belts are mail order--SAME!!! Though most of them think it is CUTE...ooooo my. They do this and don't think). Sensei I know! Training a REAL service dog. My dog is amazing but she needs so much work. Last thing on my mind... This is therapeutic really. :D MY Sensei Weiss in Chicago took me in when I was in my early 20. We learned a strong and true kata. He told we should escape from violence--open hands?? Strange things happen Sensei. I want a REAL sensei. only interested in katas (honestly) but people thing I a bit of PT (from long hospitalization). Thank you. .
