I'm continuing building up the utility cabin / doghouse / pantry (it's been used in different ways), making an arched doorway and laying the beams. The weather is really nice this week, so I'm going for a walk to the river.

I agree on the work planning. For years I worked as a builder, so there was always a schedule targets and a living/profit to consider. Now I only build by myself and for myself, so it's finished when it's finished. I'm much happier this way!

You have you own very unique style of living and creating your wonderful videos. They are often very calm without to many words, but in that silence there are many wonderful and beautiful sounds of nature and the bells from the cows. It leaves an inner space for the imagination of the viewer and provide a deep relaxation. When you visited the "waterfall" with the very old overdue wooden bridge, I even sense some of the long gone people, who use to live in these areas during the last 100-300 years. I wish you a lovely summer. Kind regards from Copenhagen, Denmark😊

I wish the Italian regulators would watch Martijn’s videos and see the care, time, and love he is putting into these structures. Perhaps then they would allow him to make practical and respectful changes such as adding or widening windows, connecting the two cabins with a glass corridor (one of Martijn’s original concepts), and other changes. Instead, they tie the hands of people who wish to improve upon and save these historic structures by making it cost prohibitive to do so while wrapped up with mountains of bureaucracy. 😢

You are absolutely right! I live in the other part of Italian Alps and I myself have a baita which I've been rebuilding. I've seen many baitas rebuilt with legaly added new windows and other spectacular stuff. That's why I'm quite surprised that he couldn't do so. The authorities let you even add some square meters for a bathroom. It might be different from region to region. However , I agree that the regulations are crazy.

It’s a balance. Regulations ensure that the future will be the preserved past. Martjin is an excellent example of keeping respect for the spirit and character of the buildings. Otherwise, someone would be putting in a jacuzzi and making a spa! It takes a certain type of person to respect what has been.

The purpose of reviewing projects and resisting exterior changes is so these historic buildings can be understood, years from now, as simple stone volumes built to last for centuries and extraordinarily, built by hand. Respecting the regional architecture, building by building, gives the whole area great value, instead of one example here or there. A glass corridor would be antithetical to the stone construction - the technology of masonry construction means beefy walls and small openings. Glass is the opposite. Additions and adjustments are possible, they just need to be made within the language.

Chickens need calcium from their feed, not from eggshells. Feeding with all in it for egg-laying chickens is best. Having chickens for a long time I only encountered an egg eater once. I blame my wild cats for snatching an egg so she ate from the remains they left. Entertained, good food-eating chickens won't eat eggs. And the chicken race makes the egg colour, not the chickens colour 😉

When you work at something you love doing it isn't work and requires minimal planning. In fact, planning is perhaps the incorrect word. Having something to do every day means our brain continues to function at its utmost capacity. Perhaps "engagement of will" for a task is the best description. When you are fortunate enough to do what you like best for your dwelling place and it fills you with affirmation and accomplishment, that is the mark of a life well-lived. When you can say that your passion has been shared with some that have wanted to learn from you to grow their character or their sense of well-being, that is the mark of a man worth knowing. Taking time to refresh your soul and body by seeking the calming effects of nature means you have found the true balance between work and Life. Your videos are those that I keep for last as they calm my own spirit and the views, panoramas of your corner of the world and sensitive videography fill me with peace. Thank you for being you.

It’s good that that you don’t micromanage your project. Things happen that can easily derail any timeline. You are very meticulous in the way you work. Keep it up you’ll be happier with the results.

The key as you say is process and concurrent activity - different tasks during the week and time to rest and reflect - you set out your priorities of work to be done before winter and your timelines are coming together. So many of us are with you in spirit and we are so grateful that you share your vision with us - thank you

At 51 minutes, the "cow invasion" always dredges a cherished childhood memory from the early 50s. I was a child on a farm in Ohio, and our parcel was flanked on both sides by adjacent dairy fields owned by the same family. As need and weather permitted, they would be moved on the roadway from one side to another. The sounds were identical! Clattering cowbells, lowing of cattle, and shuffle of hooves on gravel roadbed! I love those scenes in your edits.

Heerlijk dat geluid van de koeien en hun bellen..doet me denken aan een gedicht: Man is condemned to be free; because once thrown into the world, he is responsible for everything he does. It is up to you to give [life] a meaning.”

Every night I watch a few minutes of your weekly video with my toddler as I’m putting her to bed, since she always requested “Mountain Man." I wasn’t sure how much she was observing until today, she asked if you were building your house with peanut butter! Smart kid 😆 that’d be plenty sticky!

My parents and their friends did exactly what you're doing starting in the 70s in Tuscany. I grew up in that small village with the sound of the cement mixer calling to everyone that work was being done. One project after another, one wall after another, year after year. Very soothing videos.

What a great idea to close this video with the ticking sound of the water sprinkler. You make use of everything! It was also brilliant to include the scene of you cleaning the fridge. You took the time to do that too; once again showing care with an everyday thing that we all need to do from time to time. Everyone can relate. Special treat: the butterflies. More of those, please! And longer!

With the cow invasion the transcendental effect is achieved of many classic films, in which the rational dialogue gives way to unrestrained clamor and emotion. It's happened before and will happen again :D lovely stone work, howdy from Texas

I envy those of you who have an artists 'eye' and can sketch out ideas and have them darned near perfect before applying rulers and draftsman tools to check. The arch reminds me of some Roman aqueducts I saw in France and Italy----although, I imagine it is a common design out of necessity, eh? I also appreciate your choice of music when panning pastoral scenes---again, the "eye" and "ear" of an artist. Thank you for a delightful hour of relaxation (on my part).

Hi Martijn, I am 78 years old and My wife and I have watched your exploits in the Italian Alps since you started rebuilding there. I have built 2 of my own homes including my current one solely DIY by myself and I very much appreciate and incorporate your philosophy - I am my own schedule. I am also a retired microcomputer engineer and have been involved directly in Drones and VR. I am interested in what drone you use, my previous one was a DJI Spark and I now have a DJI Mini Pro 3 which I am just learning to use. I do have a US drone pilots license and have built and used many older drones. I would like to know what you are using and what your feelings about it are. I have noticed lately you seeming to use self following and tracking mode - through trees - I have not been that brave yet. In any case - excellent You Tube presentation - I greatly appreciate it - it suits my ethos very well. :)

Every week this series slows me down and makes me rethink what I really need in my life and what I want. And than there is in short interruption of a commercial where people show me things I definitely won´t buy, don´t need or even get digusted by. It is like a collision of two worlds.

I enjoyed seeing the lighting bugs, the one egg (when are the girls going to get on board with their duties ?) and the cow bells❣️ Also, the hike. So glad you take the time to enjoy the beauty around you. I’m sure it refreshed your soul. Hope you have a good week. 🌼
