The funny thing is, so many people who don't have the opportunity to try out guitars before they buy them, will base their purchase decisions on videos like this, not realizing that some D-45s will sound more like this D-28, and some D-28s will sound more like this D-45. As much as I appreciate these videos, they aren't so much comparisons of different models as they are of simply different individual guitars.

Although I would say (and could very well be wrong) that the woods that look better (particularly those with cross-grain, and I think possibly tighter grain (though this is somewhat subjective)) tend to also be better sonically, but you can have woods that aren't as aesthetically pleasing but still sound as good or better than others.

The different bracing patterns age very differently as well. Although forward shifted braces are more responsive and open, they magnify string noise and finger movements. And with age and drying out, that openness as well as extraneous noise increases. Straight braces, although kind of rigid and dull in the beginning, open up with age and yet maintain their fundamentals better, develop less of a cloud of overtones. Both situations can be desirable. I think of Joni Mitchell's D-28, or David Crosby's D-45, both straight braced. Vs. Neil Young's originally straight braced D-45 which he had scalloped in the 70's, or Hank his forward shifted 41' herringbone D-28.

Martin D-28 I have a 1980 and it's the only martin guitar I've actually loved and I had D35 three of them and four D28s and one D-28 twelve string,And D45 didn't like mone of them except 1980 D-28 which I'll never sell or trade,I am a Taylor guitar lover there my favorite guitars out of all other brands and I've had bunches and lots of Guitars.

@@752brickie So sorry you can't play a D-42 or dreadnought Thom. I played and compared a few D-42s and D-45s in the last 10 years. Last year I ended up buying a D-42 custom with an adirondack top and a beautiful Amazon rosewood back. I struggled with my choice of the back wood and so listened to many comparisons on KZbin. Out of all the back woods possible (Indian, Madagascar, Brazilian, Amazon, Koa, Mahogany), I found the Amazon rosewood (in combination with an adirondack top) to yield the sweetest sound I have ever heard on a dreadnought guitar as a lifelong Martin lover. I now have this beautiful darling with other "special appointments" in my home. I had to get older and more financially comfortable to afford her. I grab her in my arms everyday, just like I grab and love my beautiful wife. When I take her out of her case, the amazon rosewood overwhelms me with an out of this world smell experience (never tried weed or mushroom or anything else, but the experience is truly "transporting"). I've had it for over a year and thought the Amazon rosewood smell would fade away after a while. Fortunately for me, this smell continues to please me to the utmost every time I encounter the guitar. I have owned many expensive guitars, Martin and Taylor. My D-42 Amazon/Adirondack darling is the best lady I ever had, second only to my most beautiful wife.

This video is rather pointless. There is almost no sound quality difference between the three Martin models. Not all Martin guitars are created equal. I have a 1969 D-28 that has the Indian rosewood that sounds every bit as good as my old 1966 D-28 with Brazilian rosewood. The great hoax that Brazilian is a better wood than Indian that results in a better sound. Martin collectors and enthusiasts bought into this ruse because it keeps the value high on pre-1969 D-28s.

You are right. However, for the guitar sound, you have to consider several factors such as setting and aging differences. So even the same model gives a subtle difference in sound. No guitar in the world has the same tone. Different models have different bracing. The important thing is that the distinction pleases us.
