We're in a sticky situation where I live as only EE has strong 5G signal. They practically have a stranglehold on the region, and that makes it difficult to switch. The fact that we only have four carriers in the UK (EE, Vodafone, O2 and Three) is a travesty.

My son was paying vodafone £45 a month for a sim only, with unlimited data. He switched to Asda, who use the Vodafone network and is only paying £20 a month. Not only that, his mobile signal is a lot better now, even though he was paying more than double to vodafone.

There's no need to buy a new phone these days as there are some really good secondhand phones for about £70-80 to buy outright no contract and a £30 pay as you go sim which gives 100 gb data and most people won't use more than 50- 60 gb of data a month etc People could save a few quid by only using a smartphone for everything and cancel home Wi-Fi as WiFi isn't necessary nor is a t v and cancelling monthly subscriptions saves a lot of money too Plus buying a Portable solar powered station with 2 collapsible 100 watt solar panels would give free energy for many after initial purchase cost

They do tend to de-prioritise virtual operators, yes. You won't be deliberately slowed down, but when a cell is busy, you'll find your data performance is worse than others. Also, you're at the back of the queue when connecting to a busy cell - noticeable at a popular event, for example.

Most virtual operators have very similar speeds as the network they piggyback from, try to use ones run by the network directly such as O2 -> Giffgaff, Vodafone -> Voxi, Three -> Smarty. You can also use signal checkers to compare network coverage in your area.
