It would be useful to add a little bit about what to do next if when you take it back they refuse to do anything.

I would assume complain to head office with threat of legal action. Then take them to court

@@julian5956 Couldn't personally taking them to court end up costing more than the product is worth?

Unlikely - a Small Claims Court action for a replacement item costing up to £1500 will not cost more than £80 in court fees.

TVs are a good one - an ex display model cost me £250 but the display was too dark after six months. After some emails back and forth, they agreed to replace it. If it fails in the first six years you have a right to at least a repair or replacement.

You don't have an automatic right at all, each case is different. You have the right to take the retailer to court but only said court can decide if your claim is reasonable. In my retail days we were taken to court over a camera lens that had ceased to operate after 18 months. We were taken to court and contested and when the absolute state of the abused lens was taken into account the court found in our favour.

@@dabe1971 I was talking specifically about TVs, which is why I started my sentence with “TVs are a good one”. I never implied anything about automatic rights, you weirdo.

@sock remember to set the level back to whatever you normally have it at. many a time i've been caught out by the next thing i play blasting my ears off because i forgot to re-set after a low volume listen.

If they say it's out of warranty and then say about the SAD FART thing and they still refuse, what would be the course of action after that? Small claims?

Except they know full well that the overwhelming majority can't afford to take these matters to court, especially as they'd fight tooth and nail to ensure they don't lose because of the [broader] consequences.

A lot of phone contracts with a handset are now 3 years, but say the handset is only warrantied for 2. In that situation, is it reasonable to expect the phone to last the length of the contract?

Do these statutory rights apply for cars too? For example if something broke on your car which would cost hundreds or thousands to replace, could you argue in court that the part that broke did not last for a reasonable amount of time?

All growth plans are pointless, national government debt is growing at 5k per second and now totals at 2.6 Trillion.. this will never be repaid, it’s impossible at this point. Their only option is to devalue the currency which in turn devalues their debt. I’m 2021 11% of total uk government spending was just paying the interest on the debt.. this will only get bigger and bigger and bigger.. they will continue ti devalue the pound through inflation. The nhs, unfounded pensions, military, social care spending can only decrease as a result of this. This who don’t own Gold, Land and Bitcoin (scarce assets) will get left behind as the pound is devalued and continue to think left or right is the

Does a electric car count as tech? If so, and given that most cost upwards of £40k, I would suggest a ‘reasonable amount of time’ should be >10years?

Legend. Marketing bumpf for retailers specifically guides them to offer 12 month manufacturer warranty in the hope that the statutory UK '6month/5 or 6 year' rights are not acted upon by the customer.

Years ago I was looking for a replacement for the overly enthusiastic 90year old fridge that came with the house when I bought it... I went to the local white goods shop and was told that five years was all I could expect from a new fridge- I left and got one secondhand from charity shop instead (still going after way more than five years). Now Im poor but to me five years for a fridge is totally unreasonable, shockingly "walk out the shop" so... but what would a judge say I wonder.

Hi Martin, I signed up for Jack's flight club, black Friday deal which was £1 for 3 months, however at the end of 3 months they signed me up automatically for 1 year and charged me for full year, it's absolutely useless for me I tried to get the money back but they won't refund.

I got my daughter an Ipad £380, lasted 22 months, then wouldn't turn on. Was a few month before I managed to get it into the Apple store. They told me it's been left lying too long and cannot be fixed, wtf? lol Said they would do me a discount on a brand new one!

But how do you appeal if they continue to say no? For instance, my Xbox control button stopped working 1 week after the warranty expired. You can't contact their customer support as it's all done via their website, and you can't progress without a warranty.

Then you have to take them to court. Simply quoting your statutory rights doesn't mean the store has to change their stance one iota.

Took my £600 Samsung TV back to Curry's October last year, it hadn't lasted 20 months... "sorry only 12 month Guarantee we cant do anything for you." quoted sad fart and i wasn't happy with that response, customer service guy said sorry cant do anything in store ring our repair team on this number... Rang said number - oh that sounds like you've damaged it - I had not - return it,if no damage we will repair...They came picked it up - wrapped back in original packaging, OK we will repair for free... then got written off as no spares available so was able to get new TV for same price from curry's... Yes don't be fobbed off. Then tried to sell me an extended protection cover for new TV that only added accidental damage over my legal rights, i declined...
