My parents paid off their mortgage just before retirement, now they're going to be paying more in power than they were in mortgage payments. This is madness.
@licensedtaximan42712 жыл бұрын
Precisely, it is madness. I paid our mortgage off some time ago and my present monthly joint gas and electricity payments, like your parents, are also higher than what that mortgage was. At the moment I am in credit with my energy company, but rather than getting them to lower the present amount (and given the increases we are facing) I will let things lie. They will be going up in October and that credited amount will start to be eaten into so it can stay status quo at least for as long as possible post October.

When will anyone be brave enough to actually mention that green energy policy has played a significant part in the energy cost rise? There is no shortage of gas but there is electricity when we are reliant on weather-variable wind farms and solar. This has had a feed on the effect of forcing alternative ebergy like Gas and oil upwards.
@harrybarrow62222 жыл бұрын
Nonsense. Renewable energy, even if it is weather-variable, does not force the price of oil & gas up. It actually is competition, and helps to keep prices down.
@Towerwatson5252 жыл бұрын
@@harrybarrow6222 You on one hand claim my post is 'nonsense' whilst on the other offering a dissenting opinion based on factually incorrect points. Coal power has been virtually eradicated, that is not a competition, it's an energy policy by design! It's simple to set out clear undisputable facts that green energy policies have forced the price up that everyone pays. I don't understand how you could even dispute that, even RWE/ Npower issued a report that green policies alone, not including the price hikes they cause will cost each billpayer £240 extra. 1. the most conclusive fact is that in 2002 the Green levy was introduced, It is paid via your electric/ gas bill adding on average £153 to your bill each year. 2. Green policies of stopping facking that would release so much cheap gas forcing spot prices lower as supply outweighs demand! 3. Net zero policies by loony Polititicians egged on by media and big business in closing coal power that stops companies investing in future coal projects and creates a shortage of coal, hence a price hike and demand outweighs supply and the laughable situation where like at West Burton, energy companies use Gas to generate electricity instead of coal; What would you imagine that huge extra demand has on the gas spot price? 4. For Example last winter when there was little wind all of the electricity generating demand then goes to Gas and coal, with most of our coal power stations now closed that leaves Gas to generate virtually all the electricity, are you seriously suggesting that that the huge spike across Europe for Gas due to zero renewable energy from turbines has no effect on the price spot price of gas? Blackout will become the norm and the disastrous net zero policies bases on hearsay and flawed research will continue to force energy bills higher. It is very convenient at the moment to blame Russia for a failed policy, the fact is energy prices were already skyrocketing before any invasion of Ukraine. Indeed, take Crude oil it was $80 in January $90 in February before the invasion, and is today $89! Politicians are not only playing with national energy security for 'Woke' favor they are making it almost impossible for poor families to heat their homes.

you do realise that energy prices started to pick up in Jan 21, that was way before the Ukraine situation emerged. Its not even an opinion at this point, you can find the data on the ofgem or other energy websites. The UK is still exporting gas to mainland europe via its pipeline to Belgium and the Netherlands, if I remember correctly its running at nearly full capacity. Unfortunately when you cap the amount of money that energy suppliers can charge, you wreck the market and it cannot function correctly, and people quickly got used to the unrealistic energy bills, which I do admit would have risen, but its much better to have a gradual rise rather than a heart attack inducing spike.

I just don't know how having price rises every 3 months can work for consumers when the costs are averaged over the year. You pay the same amount each month and use less is summer and more in winter. If you make the summer savings over the 3 nicest summer months but the price increases every 3 months and wipes out the cash amount you have built up, how can the consumer ever get ahead of the prices and build up reserves for winter? The prices change too often, that is clear. By design or accident, this impoverishes consumers over the winter months, and not just the ones already struggling.

Renewable energy is MUCH cheaper (and getting cheaper still)... and the UK generates a lot with renewables already... but - we could have doubled our wind capacity over the last 10 years... and for the price of one Hinkley C nuke, we could have GIVEN 20 million homes 4kw of solar PV and 4kwh batteries (there's only 28 million households in the UK). That alone would have mitigated these gas price rises. The Tories have been anti-wind power for decades and the last thing they want is for people to generate electricity for FREE on their rooftops.

@ejbh31602 жыл бұрын
@@spencer2721 Not sure of that analogy. The Karens do moan about turbine anywhere within view - but they moan a lot more about rising electricity prices. And I'm definitely not convinced they are the people who are 'for' immigration from brown people - (white Ukranians are no problem)... but yeah the NIMBY attitude is something society should address. Perhaps ensure that those who support renewables can get access to cheaper energy. Then watch how fast they change their tune (and the energy companies). All we need to do is remove ALL gov't subsidies from energy and let the market decide - renewables are already more profitable WITHOUT any subsidies (and still the cheapest form of energy) - while fossil fuels get more subsidies globally every year than the USA spends on the Pentagon (go figure).

@Martin. Can I ask you a question? I have signed up to 100% 'renewable energy' tariffs for the last 10 years or more. I have been happy to pay a premium to get renewable electricity. Now however I have been landed with 100% rise in standing order because (we are told) of the 'energy crisis' caused by the rise in GAS prices. I have been in the energy business myself (started a community energy company) so I know that the strike price for renewable energy is WAY lower than for any other energy sources now. How can I be charged a premium for 'gas' going up - when solar and wind renewables are MUCH cheaper? Isn't that fraud or profiteering... Or at the very least misleading advertising?

I might add that my energy company are raising my standing order by 100% and are clearly NOT including the £400 government payment into their calculations - and being disabled and on benefits I get the Winter payment of £140 as well - so this year it will be an additional £540 - yet they don't include the Winter payment in their calcs either... despite the fact I have got this payment for the last 10 years too.

It's because the Levellised Cost Of Electricity is set by a range of forms of generation - most of our electricity in the UK is generated using gas fired power stations. They set the bar. Solar and wind are cheaper than gas generation and will reduce the LCOE as their capacity increases. Offshore wind sites are currently being auctioned at the lowest prices ever (£/kWh) and will continue to fall over the next decade. We need way more offshore (and onshore) wind power so we can reduce gas generation.

@@GrahamRead101 As George "Dubya" Bush didn't manage to say " fool me once shame on you........." I'm sorry if "Which?" magazine is too left wing, but I thought its piece on the latest water company scandal explained how the scam works "Our water companies are giving us sewage spills, leaking mains and a pricing postcode lottery. As a Which? Travel report found in March 2022, data from the Environment Agency shows that untreated sewage was pumped into the UK’s rivers and seas more than 400,000 times in 2020 - equal to three million hours of polluting spillages. Meanwhile, analysis by the Public Services International Research Unit (PSIRU) at University of Greenwich Business School revealed that English water companies have handed more than £2bn a year, on average, to shareholders since privatisation in 1989 - money that could have been spent improving services. If we can’t choose who supplies our water, companies repeatedly pollute our waterways and their shareholders keep making money, does the water market really work for consumers? THE UNIQUE UK WATER MARKET In 1989, the government sold the regional water authorities in England and Wales to private firms for £7.6bn. At the same time, the government assumed responsibility for the sector’s total debts amounting to £5bn and granted them a further £1.5bn of public funds. No other country in the world has adopted the English system of private companies owning and running regional water and sewerage systems. Most countries - including the USA - run water and sanitation services through the public sector. A small minority of cities subcontract private companies to run water services, while sewerage is very rarely outsourced. WASTED WATER From 2018-2021, an average of 3.1bn litres of water leaked from mains pipes each day in England and Wales. That’s equivalent to 1,245 Olympicsized swimming pools every day. In 2020-21, water companies in England and Wales lost an average of 117 litres daily per property through mains leakage. There was considerable variation by supplier, from 69 litres (Bristol Water) to 161 litres (Thames Water). SERIOUS FAILURES ON SEWAGE The thought of swimming among raw sewage is disgusting enough, but the damage sewage overflow pollution does to our health and the environment goes much deeper than what we can see and smell. Untreated wastewater also contains such nasties as microplastics; endocrine disruptors (chemicals that interfere with hormones); phosphorus, which causes algae blooms; and antibiotic-resistant bacteria - all of which end up in our seas and waterways."
