Hey Martin I love your videos and the pro tips on painting. I especially like your critiques of work done by amateurs and learn a lot from them. I am currently following your advice on a paint job on a carbon fibre bike. The wet sanding took days but the frame and forks are now as nude as they could be and the carbon weave looks stunning. I was just wondering if anyone else had a color scheme in mind but then once the frame was sanded just decided to clear coat it to show off the beauty of the carbon. I am also massive fan of Juliet Elliott and her cycling videos from around the UK.

Martin, thank you for another reaction video. It's both entertaining and informative - very useful tips. Currently I'm painting my own frame and I've run into difficulties with sanding. Whenever I sand down the primer or colour I tend to sand off too much in some spots. Even if I try not to put too much pressure on the paper, I eventually end up with either bare metal or primer getting visible through the next coat. It's a bit frustrating. What am I doing wrong? I try to repeat your preparation steps as well as paper grids. Anyway, I like your approach - not criticising too much, giving professional advice. Thanks again, can't wait to watch new videos.

40grit is for steel finishing (deburs and such), sandpaper commonly contains materials that are really hard (diamond dusts, aluminum oxides, and what not) I used NaOh for aluminum (not sure the exact content) bubbles a lot, maybe the same stuff used to prep for anodizing (looks the same) I don't recommend it, since it may change the metal structures chemically, my favorite metal for painting is chromoly (my own bike), I've jus t recently paint again (since lockdowns due to virus) inspired by Martin's video, and found out decals are stupidly easy if you know what to do, but careful what masking tapes/stencils you use, some left nasty glue even after 1day and needs to be cleaned using IPA (isopropyl alcohol) while wiping out the paint, I use acrylic based paints from spies hecker (close to home, plenty of color variants). Great works Martin, looking forward to your new videos!

I am about to start with my first bicycle project like this. I bought my bicycle in 2011 and had it stored for many years, everyone I talk to about this this is against me in doing this. So I cannot wait to prove them all wrong, I have studied many steps and taking the most caution paths before starting. When you degrease the bike, will Propylene Alcohol be strong enough? I have even started working at a car body shop to learn more about using sand paper and adding your primers and paints. Also, I will be sanding the bike down with 120, 320 then ending in 400. I will be sanding down after I apply the Primer with a wet grid 400?

I would like to repaint the frame, problem is that there are no specialist frame desginers where I live. You can paint on some powdercoats and on some you can`t. Depends on the powder used. So I can not give a general answer to this question.

Powder coat is pure plastic, so you need a suitable plastic primer to use enamel paint. The brand krylon is designed to go right over plastic, no primer required

I just finished painting my bike helmet following your how to almost to the dot. A mistake i made was not testing the more expensive masking tape before hand, it ripped off fresh paint even after 24h and it also left this stupid glue residue behind that fucked subsequent painting and sanding. After 4 days, i finished but can't say im 100% happy since it doesn't look very professional and maybe the colour scheme is a bit too busy.

Thank you Martin for another great video! In the video you have mentioned that after sanding frame down to bare aluminum you would use etch primer, however in the links you provided, there is a link to SprayMax Epoxy 2K primer. Use auto body rubbing and polishing compounds after you wet sand the clear coat. It will remove the matte finish and bring back the shine. I’m doing a bike frame right now actually using Some of Martins methods. He doesn’t use these compounds in his videos because he’s got a flawless paint technique and doesn’t get an “orange peel” finish
