I watched all of your videos. I am now starting at the beginning again to enjoy them a second time. It seems so serene and quiet. Thanks for some great viewing.

Do you live year round at your cabin or just go up for a few days or weeks at a time? We have a similar place we just bought and are fixing up in Northern Michigan. Its such an adventure and we have so much to learn!
@TheNorthwoodsman17 жыл бұрын
I get to the cabin about 4 times a year and stay 1 to 4 weeks each time. Remember, you do not have to do everything right now. Take time to sit back and enjoy what you have done.

Martins cabin is an awesome channel. I really enjoy watching it , it's relaxing and reminds me of a cabin at my aunt and uncles in California up by Yosemite national park. I spent every summer there and many Xmas breaks from school. I really miss that place and Martin takes me back there. Thanks Martin.

Thanks, I just kept my eyes open. A neighbor was having a moving sale and saw me eyeing the door on day three. Before I could offer to haul it away he told me to take it if I wanted it. It was nice and heavy so I just cut it to length.

At first the refrigerator nearer the woodshed and the fuel cans and that made me nervous. What if a clumsy bear came in the night and bit through a gas can??
@TaralgaBushAdventure5 жыл бұрын
i just got a very similar fridge out of a caravan/trailer for use at my offgrid shack. Plan to run off gas, with our 12v solar battery bank as backup, and off the 240v AC generator when we have larger groups.

You could use a hho fuel cell and it runs of water and you can't covert it to use that some thing to look into

Martin did you know that a lot of parts of Europe they never refrigerate their eggs. Never have. I often wondered why we do here and if we have to because before we purchased them at the market they were refrigerated. I guess if you have your own chickens you could try it. Surely their chickens aren't any different than in America.
@TheNorthwoodsman17 жыл бұрын
I know people that have chickens and the only thing seems to be to keep them cool like in a basement.
@CavemanCBB7 жыл бұрын
When a egg is right out of the chicken it is protected by a "Bloom" this is a almost invisible covering around the egg that keeps the air out. The problem with eggs that you buy at the store in the U.S. is that they are washed. This destroys the Bloom and then they need to be refrigerated. If you find a local small time farmer, at a local Farmer Market, he can sell you some fresh eggs that will not need to be refrigerated. You will get some very fresh and Delicious vegetables at the same Farmers Market.

Eggs are washed in the UK too and I never refrigerate them. Just do it, most food advice is nonsense

on the warmest days of the summer, apporx how much propane does this setup use?
@TheNorthwoodsman16 жыл бұрын
18 warm days on a 20 pound propane tank. This is set on the coldest setting so the whole thing is a freezer.

3 weeks to a month turned wide open is good efficiency for a propane ice box. Most ain't that efficient when used only as a cooler

Did I miss something or don't you have problems with animals getting into your food?
@TheNorthwoodsman17 жыл бұрын
I have never had an issue with animals getting into the propane refrigerator. Everything in it is frozen and the other food out there is in the buried cooler that helps hold down the odors. In the winter I keep food nearer the cabin in a hard sided cooler with a good lid to prevent the Pine squirrels and Martens out of it.

A propane refrigerator is not "off the grid", you're still buying propane to keep it running, what's the difference if you spend it on propane or mail it to the electric company? LOL
@TheNorthwoodsman17 жыл бұрын
I think most propane refrigerators are in use because there is no power line to get electricity from. They serve a good purpose when there is no other choice and are needed when you are "off the grid."
@georgiylevashov7 жыл бұрын
There is a good choice - 12v refrigerator, but your power would need to to be upgraded with more solar panels and one wind turbine.
@benparker68256 жыл бұрын
I think the difference here is that he has never said his goal was to live off of the grid. He is simply trying to enjoy a place that is off of the grid. Great set up, Martin!
