Nothing like Martin’s setup. You can see his setup in a plethora of videos. Two Kino Flos in front of the subject, two black flags on each side and a back light behind the subject lighting the background. Mamiya RZ67 with Mamiya 120mm lens.

Martin Schoeller uses 2 kino flo strip banks in front of subject facing at subject nose, the photographer is sitting in the middle of the kino flo. In the back he uses a strobe to create a gradient from bellow. Sometimes he uses additional strobes in front of subject, above and bellow, check Angelina Jolie blood portrait. He uses a MF camera Mamiya and sometimes large format 8x10 camera, when shot in the Mamiya he used a 140mm Mamiya Sekor lens to compress the face and get that shallow depth of field of MF lenses. This series of portraits are done in Kodak Portra 160 C-41 film that captures tones and skin tones of the kino in a very specific way. Without the Kino and the Portra its pretty much useless as the film and the kino is what defines the image in Schoeller work, Peter Hurley also uses kino flo lights and his portraits look nothing like Martin Schoeller work, because he is shooting on digital Hasseldlad not Kodak Portra 160 film. My two cents

As far as my observation goes, he uses Portra 800. I tried with a 160, but the light is just not enough and also, you have to compensate for the bellows extension.

large-format truly makes a stunning portrait, especially when paired with portra.

I love your tutorials, thank you so much for sharing all of your expertise! This particular one was a little refreshing actually, because it took you a while to sort things out. It's a good reminder that we are constantly learning and growing with photography. I think the biggest lesson from this one was not necessarily how to create a Martin Schoeller type portrait per se, but how to problem solve and be persistent / patient. Any who, thanks again! Schoeller also uses the 6x9 Fuji medium format "Texas Leica" which has one of the sharpest lenses found anywhere. A video on youtube shows him on several shoots using this amazing film camera at this location: He also uses the 6x9 Fuji medium format "Texas Leica" which has one of the sharpest lenses found anywhere. The catch lights in Emma's images (Martin's) look like 1/2 Peter Hurley. The lights are in the front and probably continuous.

Miles Hennis Both Martin sand Peter uses the light called Kino Flo, so yes it is continuous light.

In the place where you show Martin's image of a woman's headshot, I saw a third light on top of the camera. would that have fixed something earlier to what you were trying to do?

Why did they use ND and not just a faster shutter speed?
@Snapjockey

+L. Willis they used strobes - flash.

+L. Willis Use strobe or typical commercial photographic flash heads and the sync speeds you are limited to with a focal plane shutter are say 1/200th - it can vary a bit but the point is with studio flash you don't change the exposure by changing shutter speed. You do change exposure using aperture, and by turning down the lights to their lowest setting on the strobes they used - on mine that's 1/4 power on 500w/s lamps. If I want to use a larger aperture than that gives you, since I can't reduce power lower than that and I have my ISO set as low as the camera allows - I have 3 options - move the lights significantly farther from the subject (not practical - takes the lights through the wall and out of the room) or filter the lights (not practical - I need HUGE,incredibly, expensive ND filters) or....tatatatadataaaa...stick an ND filter over the lens and use a larger aperture. Does that explain it?
