@@shanedenny5234 Yes I don't deny that her performance is great. I was also mistaken on my time frame here. Driving Miss Daisy won the year before. (my memory isn't what it used to be, gotta remember to check Goggle more often on time frames 🤣). Goodfellas actually lost out to Dances With Wolves that year. Goodfellas is still a better movie than either of them.

Fincher, too. I think he learned it from watching Scorsese. Especially Hurdy Gurdy Man in Zodiac. Took me back to the Billy Batts beatdown scene, where Atlantis is playing on the jukebox. Only two directors I've ever seen take a mellow Donovan song, and use it to underscore horrific violence, to such great effect.

It's a great mash up, Scorcese's using classic rock tracks in his film. Honestly though, it always makes me think of Scorcese only - it never feels like his characters would ever listen to that type of music. They always seem like they'd want Manilow or Neil Diamond as their soundtrack

I love Goodfellas so much, to me it really is the absolute perfect movie. It’s so hard for me to pick a favourite scene. Just a few of the greats are Henry and Karen entering the club through the kitchen, the lighting and dialogue in the grave digging scene, the scene were Tommy kills Billy, but you might just be right about this one being the best. It’s so simple and subtle but the music, the zoom and DeNiro’s incredible performance. It’s just fine art scene after scene!

There are a few directors that have that gift of using music to heighten the scene. Francis Ford Coppola had flashes of genius like that in _Apocalypse Now._ All these years later, whenever I hear "Satisfaction" by the Rolling Stones, I see Lance water skiing behind that patrol boat. The helicopter attack sequence featuring "Ride of the Valkyries" also comes to mind. My all time favorite by Scorsese was Tom Cruise showing off in the pool hall while "Werewolves of London" was playing in _The Color of Money,_ followed by Billy Batts getting stomped while Donovan's song about Atlantis was playing in _GoodFellas._
