The story about the producer telling Tarantino that he should shoot coverage and Tarantino emphatically refusing reminds me of a clip I saw of Werner Herzog talking about why he doesn't shoot coverage: "People ask me why I don't shoot coverage and I always tell them the same thing, it's because I know what I'm doing". The next time you see Steve Buscemi in a Tarantino film is Pulp Fiction, and he is a waiter. I've often wondered if it is the same character and just Quentin's way of winking to the audience that Mr. Pink made it out alive in Reservoir Dogs, because you never actually see him die. But also, it would be poetic justice for Mr. Pink, who didn't believe in tipping, to have to earn a living as a waiter. It would also suggest that, even though he didn't die, Mr. Pink didn't get away with the diamonds.
@auntedistarious

So there is a theory that Pulp Fiction is the prequel to Reservoir Dogs, given that Vic Vega is Vincent Vega's brother and Vincent is still alive during the Reservoir Dogs timeline, Mr. White also makes a reference to Alabama from True Romance, Winston Wolf at one point talks to someone named Joe (possibly Joe Cabot) and I believe there was also a reference to Marcellus Wallace in Reservoir Dogs as well. It might make sense that the waiter is Mr. Pink, and the rant from Mr. Pink about not tipping is meant to either overcompensate for being a waiter in front of a bunch of hardened criminals or it could be to throw them off as Mr. Pink took it very serious to not tell each other about their past. Also, it's clear that Buddy Holly (waiter) in Pulp Fiction hates his job and Vincent does not leave him a very good tip.

Back then in 1993 in high school in Luxembourg we had a cinema class professor who showed us that movie on a beta max player. We had to look at it and analyze the chronology and compare it with QT‘s editing work. I, we , were flabbergasted by that flick and he, the professor just like that became our favorite one. From then on , QT‘s work has been and stayed part of my film buff life, since then. Kudos to him and all those awesome actors. My son already quoted some Chris Waltzes ligns of Django (the d is silent) at an early age of 4 (out of excerps , mind you). I guess , some things stick for life, and don‘t skip generations… Cheers from tiny Luxembourg;-)

There is no way that Buscemi is a lousy tipper in real life. He was an FDNY firefighter, and after 9/11 he went to his old house and volunteered for weeks digging in the wreckage looking for survivors, and then looking for remains. No press releases. It took years for the story to get out. That is who Buscemi is when no one is looking. I lost a good friend last year to liver cancer, thanks to all the building material crud they had to breathe in at the WTC site. He'd been an NYPD mounted police officer, and he was one of the better people I ever knew. I hope Steve doesn't experience any health consequences for his service. He's a good and decent man. This is Tarantino's best movie and the cast was spectacular in it. They all bought in to such a well written script and Buscemi quietly stole the show being one of the most believable scumbags in a group full of them. The tipping rant was executed perfectly. This movie just works though and it paved the way for Tarantino to dive deeper into his style later on, but I still maintain this is the cleanest and best work he has done. The disjointed story here fits the action and it's used properly without doing too much. I personally felt that Pulp Fiction took it too far. It wasn't until I saw Reservoir Dogs that I started understanding Tarantino. I liked Kill Bill and From Dusk Til Dawn, but his more real to live works were hard to get behind. Reservoir Dogs really changed that. I'll say this about the movie. Reservoir Dogs is probably the greatest directorial debut by a writer/director in cinema history. It's so tight and and clean both as a story and the filmography that it's hard to find many faults. I rarely see people talk about "Tarantino really refined this style later" or "You can see the seeds of greater things to come" because this movie was great on its own. If anything this movie was the most refined and contained Tarantino will ever be and we see it as a starting point to push to excess.

Everything you get to hear about the movie from Buscemi is great, really like this video. However, any story I get to hear about Lawrence Tierney from an actor that worked with him is always far more interesting than anything else.

I’ll always feel an odd sense of pride in Reservoir Dogs because it was in my time, it was my generations first proper cool movie and in the UK it didn’t get a very wide release. Hard to imagine that’s over 30 years ago and now it’s an oldies movie 😂

Did Mr Pink get arrested outside the warehouse ? gunned down by the cops ? or did he escape altogether and get a job at Jack Rabbit Slims
@EvertfromNederland

I believe you can hear gunshots and police yelling at the end of the movie when he walks out. i suspect it's implied he got shot. But yeah, he probably survived to go work as a Buddy Holly waiter

Pink gets shot and captured. If you turn up the volume you can hear him scream, "Stop shooting! I've been shot goddamnit!" There's no more shots outside after that.

Steve Buscemi's acting career took off because of this movie

I loved this movie and must have rented it 20 times when I was a teenager. Tarintino is an incredibly gifted filmmaker but I just learned his philosophy on tipping when Steve talked about it. If that's actually true then he's kind of a dickhead then. In places where gratuity is expected tipping is optional but it's not really optional. A certain amount is standard and expected. Anything beyond that is for exceptional service. I did the pizza thing part time and full time at various points in my life (you'd be surprised how well you can do in the right area working for the right company). Getting stiffed hurts. If you order fifty bucks worh of food and can't find another 3 to 6 dollars to tip the driver then you should get in your car and pick up your own damn pizza. Still it was always a great part time gig for extra cash but I'm glad I don't do that job anymore. Oh and since we're on the subject of not tipping I'd like to address a stereotype, namely the one that says black people don't tip. That was actually true at one time but it's a long time ago now. I never had that issue and in fact they were often the best tippers. When the stereotype was created I've had plenty of black people say that they weren't aware that you're supposed to tip the driver, but that's not the case now so if you haven't already you can lay it to rest. If you don't get tipped it's probably because you did something wrong not because they don't tip as a general rule.

He's not wrong about tipping. We all still do it for various reasons. Public pressure, guilt, etc., but it really is a scam on both parties. I say that with the understanding that restaurants usually have very small profit margins. Nevertheless, severs should be paid a livable hourly wage.
