I'm a business major who wants to be a pharmacist. He did the best thing. The drug wasn't profitable which means it wouldn't keep up with the evolution of diseases. He raised the price to a reasonable number, where they would get THE CURE to a certain disease that we really need to get rid of, to a break even point. Either don't raise the price, the disease doesn't get taken care of, more people get it, and the company can't pay for that drug to be made OR raise the price, see how the market reacts (not people's opinion), reduce the price to a stable amount that goes with supply and demand and get rid of the disease.

+Brandon Luco ID (infectious disease) specialists on the record--who've actually prescribed Daraprim to patients with toxoplasmosis (unlike Martin Shkreli)--say that a better, safer Daraprim is not needed. But an affordable Daraprim is very much needed. Shkreli's retroactive defense of the Daraprim price hike (and "hike" is really too soft of a term) is highly questionable, if not outright bunk. Turing/Shkreli are basically saying, "Allow us to legally exploit/rape patients, insurance companies, and the government [Medicaid mostly, in the case of toxo]--but really in just a tiny way overall--so that we can create a better drug. Nevermind those 'experts' who say that a better drug really isn't needed. That's not the point. Or better yet, those so-called experts are morons, who don't know what they're talking about. And once we've exploited/raped the system, and we think we have enough cash, we'll follow through with the creation and testing of an unnecessary 'better Daraprim.' Really, we will. Trust us. But gosh, if we have to lower the price of Daraprim, those poor patients will ultimately suffer because we didn't have enough cash to create a 'better Daraprim.' And really, if we're about anything, we're all about the patients, because Martin Shkreli can pronounce big medical words." It's all hogwash.

My first impression of all this a few days ago was in tune with the headlines: "greedy spoiled rich brat raises price of drug through the ceiling." But there's always "more to it" that goes on behind the scenes which few see. I'm curiously interested in the altruistic undertones alluded to by Mr. Shkreli, while acknowledging that unless I'm directly involved in his business, that it's none of my business to judge. I'm not the one pouring my life's efforts into this field; so I can't honestly say how it should be done - if the goal is to achieve a better result than what presently is. And if I were to be his moral judge, I'd be first asking the people who use this drug, and the people who are the recipients of his charity - before I'd ask the opinion of those who aren't. Thanks for this video.

Martin donated 10million of his own money to Charity no one ever mentions it in the media, one of the differences regarding daraprim is Martins prices are affecting the companies that can afford it, and the cost to the poor and other consumers is virtually free. I have trouble to judge his character and his primary motivation. In the CBS interview he stroke me as a prick who bought a company because he seek the opportunity of rising costs and earning huge profit out of it. On the other hand, on this interview he strikes me as a guy who saw an opportunity on this company to bring research and evolution to this drug that hasnt seen much evolution in the past years and presents many side effects that cause patients to quit their treatment. I want to go more with this interview strictly because buying a pharmaceutical company that treats Taxoplasmosis isnt necessarily the best way to earn huge profits. There are thousand other companies you can invest on that will give you 10x more money than this.

What a clown, just listen to him say how small his fraud is compared to the whole industry, he is basically saying he will only still $5 dollars per insuranced individual and a little bit more from the government to pay for his company's operations and research. This is whats going on and why health care is sky rocket high, glad he is accidentally pointing out the flaws in the system and how corporate america uses the system to do free research and have the taxpayer pay for it... and in the end of it still have a protected patent they own!!! Who is going to own the patent of this new taxpayer funded pill to combat toxoplasmosis? I assume its going to be public domain and anyone will be able to make the new pill.

lukivah I did listen to a word. It was "cure", there are no cures for most of the illnesses and no life without buying their pills and living on them forever. As a small business owner, this Obama expense I have to dump on customers. Insurance dropped us. My employees went from $20.00 a week up to $400.00 a week (all out of pocket until they spend 2 years income) who could not afford it, which means NO healthcare for them. One persons meds cost for 28 days what they made in a year BEFORE taxes I have to pass it on to customers who are creating this huge jump in cost of living.. If I hauled this pharmas meds, I would charge hundreds of dollars per pill to cover cost of living for my employees. I am not impressed with this guy saying he "donates" millions to charities as a matter of fact I'm disgusted, it's a tax deduction passed on to tax payers. Donate means to give and not expect or take in return. He gives away meds? Again dumped on tax payers as a "loss". If they were affordable, everyone would be able to afford healthcare.

lukivah At times he clearly evaded the questions. The point is, he's trying to say how awesome he is for taking $0 in salary yet it's completely and utterly irrelevant - it's typically only done for tax reason. "I'm gonna Change the WORLD!" Like he honestly even cares how that transformation unfolds for the 99% that aren't millionaire capitalist. What he and other drug companies are doing will/is having a negative effect on people's health insurance premiums across the country. The "conversation" we need to have about pricing involves providing more transparency to break even cost, and perhaps not allowing technocrats to completely exploit and take advantage of people who can't possibly be a part of that process...?
