So much to say for this episode. First, Ted may be one of the best interviewers to come around in a long time. His questions, probing and overall style brings out the best in his guest. Martin Short. A unique person. He has created some of the greatest characters and bits of all time. He also has a personality that makes me wish I knew him as a friend. Three Amigos is such an underrated classic. It came out before I was even born, but some of my favorite memories are sitting with friends in high school, having some drinks and just watching the movie and laughing our butts off. We all had loved it as children and it was just something we bonded over while also discussing the silly drama of high school, college and life and also all the real loss we had each felt from close family members at young ages which probably had initially brought us together. Three Amigos become a bedrock and we still bring it up every now and again.

I adore Martin Short. I first saw him in Godspell in Toronto with that star packed cast - only none of them knew that's where they were heading at the time. Victor Garber, Eugene Levy, Andrea Martin, Gilda Radner, Dave Thomas, Martin Short, Jayne Eastwood, Paul Shaffer, Avril Chown, Gerry Salsberg, Rudy Webb and Derek McGrath . In fact, one evening my sister (a dance teacher) and I ended up at a party with some of the cast members I went on to see many of them again along with new faces at Second City in Toronto which I went to for years (along with Yuk Yuk's). They were all there: John Candy, Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara, Robin Duke, Andrea Martin, Joe Flaherty, Harold Ramis, Rick Moranis, Dave Thomas, Dan Aykroyd, Mike Meyers, Tony Rosato and that is where I first saw Martin Short do Ed Grimley. 🤣A night of laughter is so good for the soul - and these were the best of the best. Of course, I followed them to SCTV and SNL and then all their movies. One of my favourites of Martin's is 'Simple Wish', which I watched with my daughters. What a scream he was in that movie playing a fairy godmother. If you haven't seen it - watch it. Of course 'Father of the Bride 1 & 11 are absolute classics. I love them all...and so miss John Candy. Great interview!!!!

Reading his book encouraged me to write my own, "The Ten Gifts Of Grief" under my pen name Hawthorne Wood, when my husband died, suddenly, in a mountain climbing accident. Using 6 degres of separation, the amount of A+ guests TD can get on this podcast ilimitless. Plus they all know each other or know someone who does off screen or in their personal lives that its a very comfortable vibe for them it seems. To think that some of them have known each before fame and managed to become famous as well is pretty mind boggling. Very enjoyable conversation between the 2 of you. As a Torontonian, now living abroad, it was warming to hear the Canadian references, all of which I can relate to. I would've seen Godspell at the Bayview Playhouse in my Leaside neighbourhood, but I don't know who was in the cast at that point. I served drinks at 2nd City Fire Hall when Marty was in the cast with so many others who went on to be known talents. I worked there through 2 shows & I totally knew these were some of the funniest, talented performers of their time & that they'd go on to big careers writing or performing or both. Then, of course, SCTV, which we all knew all the bits & still play-out with friends & fam. OMG Marty's Trudeau (Sr)!

I've heard this play mentioned quite a few times now in Comedy interviews/circles, and I'm looking up the original castings from like 71-73 and it's obviously got super-heavy hitters like we all know, but I can't figure out why it was SUCH a HUGE deal. Is there something I can watch or read that goes into why this was such a big deal in the comedy/theatre world? Whenever someone brings it up you can see people's eyes go wide and talk about it like it was the best thing ever, and I don't know anything about it.

@@xhighone I figure that Godspell is one of those cultural artifacts that American actors look back on with fondness when speaking with each other. Because it's basically a black box show with no real mandatory staging requirements, it can be put on easily at every level from highschool to college to Broadway, so many actors have been in a Godspell production at some point in their lives. Almost all the numbers are group numbers, so the emphasis in that show is on working together as a cast rather than letting some cast members be the stars and everyone else supporting them (except for the guy who gets to be Jesus of course). As for the show itself, it has a secular spiritual approach to Christianity, which appeals to many non-Christians as well as liberal Christians. In Canada, the show is known for bringing together much of the SCTV cast before they were the SCTV cast.
