That '68 D28 sounds stunning- rich and clear across the frequencies with great separation. Very vintage sounding. #4 nice also.

For fun I analyzed the spectrum for each guitar. Extremely similar. The Paela had noticeably less bass (~100Hz) but was otherwise identical. The Brazilian is about 3dB higher in the high range (G3 and above) but 3dB lower in the midrange between G2 and G3.
@danielpenaofficial41865 жыл бұрын
Dave Anderson did you extract the file into an audio file? Brazilian Rosewood is louder 3dB is noticeable. 3dB is one S unit of sound.

wonderful set of guitars, and great playing to demonstrate the differences (though they all sound fantastic)! While the backs were identified (and rightfully so with some amazing rosewoods in there) don't discount the fact that much of the tone we're all hearing is due to the varying tops. That last combo of Adi/Madi sounds primo!

My what a lovely stable of horses you have. They each have their own vibe. I dug the 68's warm, classic Martin/Braz sound (broken in), but they are all real nice. I guess my least favorite is the D42-Paela. I loved the Honduran and the Madi, probably in that order. But in person I might totally love the Paela guitar above the others. In this recording it seemed that it was less warm. I think you ought to go ahead and order a Cocobolo guitar to round it out! I take it you're not a mahogany lover. I am. I have and use both RW and hog. My favorite is probably my D18GE, but my D28M is right up there and on any given day I might say one or the other. I had a nice OM-28V and now that they quit making them (I can't believe it), I wish I had never sold it. I would also like to know more about the bracing on the guitars and what your thoughts are on the merits of each wood. Which do you play the most? Congratulations on a nice collection.

Yeah nice Guitars, D-28 in my mind is the iconic sound, if you like, it's the sound you expect an acoustic to sound, in my view of course.....Of course I have a D-28 Re-imagined and love it, makes me smile every time I play, which is every day. Makes you forget pressures of work within minutes.

Brazilian and Amazon sound pretty similar to my ears, Amazon sounds a bit bassier, which could probably be attributed to the Adirondack top, but overtones are there. D-42s are beautiful guitars.

I love the D-28 with the Brazilian rosewood. I always go back to my Martin HD-28. It always gets me the sound I smile about. It's only East Indian unlike the guitar in the video, but that's good enough for a poor guy like me :)

My heart goes to D28. Brilliant muscular sound with lots bites to it. I am also a proud owner of a 69’s sample, it is said that the straight bracing , large rosewood bridge plate contribute to the stiffness to the top, thus the character of the sound. I’m sure 45s will mature to a degree that surpasses the 28, yet for now 28 is a winner for me
@jixxxxer177 жыл бұрын
they all sound amazing and I could not really tell the difference between any of them, but oh what tones, nicely done. now the reality, a woman can't tell the difference between one of those beautiful pieces of art made by Martin and a plywood Yamaha fg110 made in Taiwan , they can tho hear beautiful, sad words and stories . Peace !

man... what a collection! they all sound great. it's a tie between the amazon and the madi for me.
@vox19622 жыл бұрын
The difference in tonewoods, is definitely something that is only truly appreciated by the player; most listeners would not be able to tell the differences. This is especially true for the subtleties of rosewood varieties which aren’t as sonically obvious as the differences between mahogany or maple. I do love the sound of Brazilian Rosewood and the particular “dryness” it imparts to the tone but honestly there is not enough of a difference to justify the outrageous prices of those models. I actually prefer maple over any variety rosewood but that’s just personal preference

For me the d28 has the most "iconic" sound....the sound of an acoustic guitar on every radio. Very nice bright tones with a complex mid. My favorite though was the D-42 Amazon. It just had a beautiful deep tone that feels calmest to my ears. Curious which guitar the owners favorite is.

I prefer the D28 Brasil ( redvood top). I hear the high and middle frequvencis, nat only the low. The Amazonas D42 can hear the very deep and worm bass. The D42 paela is what I would buy of these colleczion. I had over 8 years a D28 Brasil / 1983. but I changed it for a Gibson J45 TV. I say haven't best guitar, only a guitar what likes me.

D-42's are nice if you could afford one, and appreciate fancy wood and inlays, but to my ear the D-28 wins this context for tonal richness. Of course this is completely subjective and depends on what you are looking for - sometimes different examples of the same model can sound different too! Out of curiosity, are they all strung with the same strings, and if so, what are they?
@danhutchinson86494 жыл бұрын
1968 D-28....Just has that "Martin Sound" ........Sounds almost as good as my Bourgeois Vintage D......Almost....and I think that has to do with the guy that used to be a Martin Luthier that repaired the returned Martins and saw why they were being returned for repair.....he addressed those problems and made a better version of the D28....IMHO...Play a Bourgeois Vintage D or any other Dreadnought made by Dana and you'll see what I mean.....

You're playing too close to the bridge. It gives each guitar less of a chance to project the dreadnought's "rich" voice. Other than that, I enjoyed the video.
@aaronkim10746 жыл бұрын
Don Reed I completely agree. Playing that close to the bridge makes an overwhelming nasally sound; might as well play a banjo at that point.
@drothberg36 жыл бұрын
It depends upon the style of music and your personal style. I personally think that playing directly over the soundhole produces too boomy a sound, especially on a dread.
@probono93415 жыл бұрын
Playing that close to the bridge is actually a technique that adds acoustic shrill and takes away the natural balance between the strings. That technique is misleading and truly isn’t desired in this demonstration. Surprised that the player didn’t recognize that himself.
@ohrofax5 жыл бұрын
alpen-spruce or sitka spruce is a fine grain wood there is no reason to prefere Adirondack for a guitar Top.
@el34glo59 Жыл бұрын
Sitka isn't finer grain. Unless you mean appearance wise, which is completely irrelevant to tone. Although you can still get fined grained adirondack. It's a smaller tree remember. Adirondack and Alpine are on another level to Sitka imo.
