Proudly I present this video of my friend and former student Martin van den Berg. Listen to Martin's super sound on his "Kühnl & Hoyer" bass-trombone in "Saturday Night Is the Loneliest Night of the Week" arranged and conducted by Patrick Williams.
Martin plays here with his own orchestra, the "Metropole Orchestra Big Band" from the Netherlands.
Beside Martin the other trombone section members are Bart van Lier, Jan Bastiani and Jan Oosting. Little detail is that both Jan Bastiani and Jan Oosting also studied with me.
Martin is professor at both the Amsterdam- and Rotterdam "Codarts" Conservatories.
Sorry for the little synchronisation problem between sound and video!

Unless you are playing fairly high( like over b5) , a small bell bass is better to use imo for almost anything you play.

A big tip to anyone thinking of buying a bass trombone or generally upgrading. I seriously advise getting a double independent open-wrap instrument. I had a Holton TR181 (double independent) for decades and wondered why my lower triggered notes were harder to blow and l found out it was because the tubing was closed--wrap and thus causing too much resistance. My new Yamaha Custom is open-wrap and is so easy to get every note to speak at an equivalent volume no matter in which register.....
@boneblaster69
@boneblaster69 3 ай бұрын
That is a lot more likely due to the rotors just being faulty or dirty rather than the twist and turns in the closed wrap. I have played various closed wrap horns (42b, 50b corp, conn 62, conn 88h, etc..) which blew better than open wrap horns. The one thing they all had in common was their amazingly well taken care of rotor(s).
@denfinch5694
@denfinch5694 3 ай бұрын
@@boneblaster69 I'm afraid that you're completely wrong! My two previously owned Holton TR181 double independent Bass Trombones didn't speak well when using the F rotor and using 3rd position for Eb and lower below the stave! These trombones were closed wrap and had a lot of resistance! Both of which, l purchased brand new, so there were no issues regarding the rotors being faulty or dirty! Bass Trombones aren't horns!!!

By playing them over and over and over and we'll, you get the point :P do lots of long notes trying to keep the note as still and central as you can :) then do long notes starting at pp crescendo up to a ff then back down to a pp in one breath and make it last as long as you can, that will help create a much more consistent tone :) hope that helps and have fun!
