Hinges was crying after she won because she knew she had two bad ankles. That year she got an operation on one of them. So, felt very that she was still able to win even though she was the number one seed. Martina's biggestistake was playing doubles tournaments as well as singles. Add to all that constant practice and by age 20 here her hips and ankles were all worn out. If she just played singles tournaments she would have dominated at least another five more years even beating Serena when she reached her prime. Don't over do anything in live.

I think the first operation took place at the end of 2001, the second one in May 2002.

I don't think she would've fared any better against Serena if not for those senseless doubles' matches, but it definitely played a role in several of her losses, most notably the AO 2001 and 2002 finals against Capriati. She was all but fresh in that scorching Australian heat, and the doubles definitely contributed to it.

Martina always played a smart game against Monica. She stood very close to the baseline and took everything very early. She robbed Monica of time and was able to put her in trouble. Martina was always at her best and played remarkably well when she struck the ball early. This is the same style she executed very effectively whenever she had a win against the Williams sisters. If she backed up too much, she became too defensive and usually ended up losing those matches.

Unbelievable that 11th game of the first set, pity Monica could not pull this off.

Monica's game was unmatched in the history of women's tennis. But her limited fitness and mobility after her comeback kept her from becoming the GOAT. She still remains one of the legends of the game though.

Nobody will ever surpass the ruthless brilliance of Monica Seles commanding the court with her ground strokes. She invented angles that hadn’t even been conceived of before, and she was consistently able to execute her shots with powerful precision. Her raw talent and mental fortitude in her first career is still hard to fully comprehend. She was a phenomenon.

Agassi did the same in the 90s. Sharp angles taking the ball early.
