This is why I loved watching Martina Hingis. Nobody has a tennis brain like her. Such a joy watching her shot making rather than players power playing their way to victory.

Martina Hingis is as talented as she is beautiful. She’s got to be one of the Top 5 DOUBLES PLAYERS EVER. Some say she’s not super polite. I’m still a big fan. Her tennis is amazing and she’s a petite little thing competing against big strong women. She’s one of the most gifted player EVER. She was #1 in the world in singles AND doubles as a 16-year old!!! And, she trained at Saddlebrook, my old home. I can watch her doubles for hours.

Ding Joson honestly though 2006 was kind of transition year for the tour, with Clijsters retiring and the Williams sisters’ injuries/lack of play and the Serbians were not yet in full flight, so Hingis came back playing very smart counterpunching tennis and did well. It’s amazing how many matches you can win just by being extremely solid back then...while I was surprised she did so well so soon, on one hand I wasn’t surprised. Her singles comeback was one of the more exciting ones I can think of in the open era. I know the cocaine thing at the end of 2007 was awful and hurt her pride a little and caused her to leave tennis again, but I mean we all make mistakes...I wish she could have stayed on tour and been competitive at least another 2-3 years. I say that because her serve was considerably slower than some of her rivals of her generation...but at least we got a doubles comeback...and a she actually played singles a few times in Fed Cup and got to play the Radwanska sisters if I remember correctly.

djIV Foodie djIV Foodie Tennis was never meant to be a power game. The blockbuster players have ruined tennis. It is a game requiring intelligence, finesse, power when it is needed (rarely), reading your opponent’s next move, precise placement of the ball, using the element of surprise. Sound like anyone today? Roger Federer, for instance?
@JamaalABivens
@JamaalABivens 4 жыл бұрын
@@mckavitt13 to be fair, though, if tennis were ALL power then the power hitters would have more slams. I think of like Lisicki - powerful groundstrokes and serves but nothing to really show for it. Some of the bigger power players won because they knew how to mix in solid power with placement and finesse. I wish Hingis could have done the same because she was an absolute joy to watch.

Just watching Hingis play, only focusing on the side of the court that she is on (easiest when nearest to screen), I can comfortably say that her movement and balance is simply one of the smoothest and most elegant of players, in both women and men's tennis, that I have seen! She is beautiful to watch play!

Wta4hand Clijsters has nothing to do with those players though-I think they’re talking about players who were at the top but considered counterpunchers/underpowered. Hingis was certainly able to dictate besides being underpowered by taking the ball early and constructing a point. She was certainly better than that trio. Clijsters is in another category. She certainly had variety but was such a superior athlete and ball striker, she beats Hingis and all three others when she’s at her best, without question.

In my opinion Hingis hit the ball harder and with deeper and better placement when she was #1 and much younger. She was able to match by taking the ball so early and redirecting against the big hitters. Her forehand was much weaker around this time and she became much more defensive. What she never lost was her touch and her mental brilliance.

@@sheezamann2724 Mauresmo and Clijsters were both perfect players when it comes to the technique. Yes, they stopped Hingis' domination, because they had more power and that was determining factor, but you mustn't insult them by saying such reckless things. These two women have showed for many years beautiful shot matking, great net play and court feeling. Maybe not all of these skills were as good as Martina's ball feeling and on court anticipation, but it wasn't just the rough force in their game that made them so excellent. Williams sisters are much closer to your definition of "destroying the game", but I still would be careful about considering them as not-well-techincally playing. Just not that pleasantly for the eye I think.

@@charliez077 Exactly. For me Hingis, e.g in 1999, was playing better tennis in her early years on Tour. Probably the best. Agressive with great finenesse, ball and court feeling, net play, anticipation, defense, counterattack and simply everything that comes to my mind. Comparing with 2006 performance from Hingis maybe even Aga from 2012, end of the 2015, etc. was better, but she was never capable of putting enough power and consistency to her A-game, so she never won a Grand Slam in that period of time. Hingis also couldn't repeat her successes in 2006-2007.

Hingis looked to be in far better shape here in '06 than when she was number 1 in the world. She had a lean, toned physique and her body fat was much lower. Unfortunately at this point she was a just a bit short on the quickness needed to deal w/ the very best players on tour like Serena Williams whose games were based on power and speed.
