It's difficult to produce a lighter than air smoke without combustion. Technically, even a lot of actual fire based smoke isn't lighter than air (like the big billowing black smoke). However, in a classic fire, the flames create a powerful updraft that pulls even the thicker & heavier smoke upwards. The only easy way to create a lightweight smoke without combustion would be the reaction between ammonia and hydrochloric acid. But ammonia will eat into and wreck various plastics, while HCl acid is insanely corrosive and will burn skin and plastic on contact. So that's not really a feasible option either.

the smoke is basically vapor from fog liquid, most of which are water based. It won't damage the gun if you clean it after a game.
