In this video, I'll explain the benefits of the 05 and later rocker arm and show how to install these upgraded rocker arms. This also a great time to replace the lash adjusters (lifters) if there is any lifter tick. Also, show you how they operate with the engine running. With an epic fail but funny.

Greetings Martin, I have a 2003 Jeep Liberty 3.7 and I'm in the process of changing hydraulic lifters as most of them are Not plunging. The Jeep overheated about 6 years ago. I managed to run it once in a while. Anyway, I went to our part store here O'Reilly's ordered some lifters and he told me that they don't stock engine internal parts now a days because, "no one do engine overhaul anymore, they just buy rebuilt engine". I told him that's bs. There are still people who rebuild their engines. So the bottom line, I'm not going back there to buy the rest of lifters and rockers in that store. Thanks for the great tips and videos.

Great video!!! One question, I changed the Cloyes timing kit and I feel the same tensioner knock noise I had before. Disappears within 2 to 5 minutes of turning on. the oil pressure measured it and it is at 70 cold and at 18 hot idle. I put liqui moly for botadores and I do not improve. What can be?

@martinbuilt 2 ай бұрын
I would replace all or at least on that one side the fact that you were able to pull the rockers out out by hand indicate they were collapsed lifters you're lucky that the rockers stayed in place. When you say that the lifters were seized or they will seem like a solid lifters, like you are unable to compress them in either way those are actually good. Also make sure that the valve springs are all in good shape none are broken.

Okay, Rockauto has a Cloyes set #90393SF listed under 2008 dodge Dakota 4.7 for $270.00. This will have everything you will need, except the toner wheel from a 2002 4.7. Grind the rivets from the back side and punch then out enough the remove the toner wheel, Swap the 02 onto the 08 sprocket and weld up the rivets. I spoke with Cloyes about what I was doing and he agreed it would work. And mine is working great. Cloyes has a video on youtube with both applications if you need to watch and see what they did differently. Best of luck.

Ok I got some of these upgraded rockers from a 4.7, I see your point and the issue with the original rockers, but I also see that the new rockers created another issue, lack of oil to rocker bearings, I have seen a few videos and the majority of rockers that come off are from the exhaust valves so I’m thinking of installing the upgraded rockers on exhaust valves and leaving the originals for the intake valve as they put out a lot more oil.

Wouldn't it be much safer all the way around to just remove the cam gear with the engine at tdc, and then remove the cam bearing caps pull the cam and simply pick up the rockers and place the new ones, then reverse the process. My experience with these aluminum heads it doesn't take much at all to crack them. Prying any part of the heads edges is scary. Would rather spend a little more time doing the job right then chance a cracked head🧐 I attempted this pop out just to see, and sure enough, I ended up with a crack... Not from actually removing the rocker, that was after I found a broken valve spring and a dropped valve seat. I mic dropped the ratchet which conveniently landed right on the edge of the first air intake flange and cracked the corner.

Hey Martin! Love all your 4.7 videos! You have no idea how much I have learned from your videos!! Thank you. Wondering what rocker arm brand you put in with the new design? Huge price difference and origin of manufacture. My rockers seem all right, but have old style you mention in video (2001 dodge dakota 4.7). Swapping all lifters and seems like good time to change to new style. Received DNJ (made in china). Got the similar priced EngineTech rockers you mentioned above coming this week. I am torn if I should just leave the old ones or not. Just don't want to put in low quality arms, but think the new design makes sense. Also everything says the Melling MR-1345 rocker doesn't fit 2001 but fits 2002, do you think that is a screw up or is there something to it.

I have a 06 3.7L. the rocker arm on cylinder two will not stay put. There seems to be an 1/8 inch space between the lobe and the rocker. There is no visible damage or wear on the cam lobe. I bought a new rocker and lifter. Same issue. It looks to me like the valve (stem?), The part with the spring may be a little bit lower than the rest, but I don't really know. Would a rocker arm clip help?
@martinbuilt
@martinbuilt 2 жыл бұрын
Perhaps you should inspect the valve Spring make sure it's not broken anywhere and it is also possible that the valve. seat is starting to come out.

As long as it didn't damage the cylinder head it is an easy fix. It depends how well the engine has been maintained, I don't see why you couldn't get 250K

They should come out quite easy by hand if you're having any difficulty at all with them you could probably grab them with a pair of small channel locks or needle nose pliers from the outside edge and lift them out.

07 Jeep Liberty, 3.7. My question has to do with the rocker arm and lift shooting through the plastic valve cover today. My question is if the rocker arm wasn't sitting properly or if the lifts with bad could that be the cause?
@martinbuilt
@martinbuilt 2 жыл бұрын
If the rocker arm was installed incorrectly, that could happen, but generally, the lifters (lash adjuster) will collapse, causing the rocker to fail out. Then, once that happens, the oil pressure will push the lash adjuster out as well. I have seen several valve covers damaged from the rocker arm. I've never seen one where the lash adjuster goes through the valve cover.

Martin quick question. I had my motor at TDC and I was installing new chains amd sprockets. When I pushed up on driverside camshaft vise grips slipped and the timing mark moved to about the ten o clock position. Can I rotate it back to proper position? Thanks
@martinbuilt
@martinbuilt Жыл бұрын
It's not unusual for the camshaft to rotate after you remove the timing chain as long as you marked the sprocket and the chain and return them to the exact same location and then you'll have to rotate the Cam to get the gear back on you should have no problems.

I had a rocker kick off. Valve lash adjuster would not compress at all until I put it in a vice. I put in a new VLA and a new rocker arm, but it had the larger hole. The truck ran great for one month. Now it has kicked a rocker off again. Misfire codes for the same cylinder. Im getting really tired of this engine.

Hey Martin reaching out to you II have done in all the upgrades like injectors in coil packs plugs things of that nature in them the Jeep developed a misfire so I replaced the PCM and still misfiring on injector number 2 and cylinder I'm sorry has injector code on solar number 2 and a misfire on cell number 8 well since I changed all those components electrical I figured a rocker came off And I just pull the valve cover in all the rockers are good would you think it might be a collapsed lifter should I continue digging or should I

I would take a close look at the wiring right by the connectors and make sure the insulation is good and not shorted to the other wires on both the coil and injector.

Hey Martin… I just did a head gasket job on my 4.7.. I soaked my brand new lifters in oil prior to putting them in the head and when I pulled them out the oil they had a good amount of play to them.. prior to soaking them they did not. Is this bad? I know they were good new injectors and I don’t get why they are so movable now.

Yeah mine are OEM I had higher confidence in the OEM part than I do the aftermarket ones. But the ones you did get are still directing the oil toward the cam lobe instead of just hitting the top of the valve cover and splashing everywhere.
@BuiltByRik
@BuiltByRik 3 ай бұрын
@@martinbuilt I have always had a good run with Mellings in the past. I know they cost more but you get what you pay for. Just like the timing set. The quality of this set compared to a generic brand before is noticeably different. I also purchased the professional set. This set is made from Hardened steel and I think only Mellings do a set like that. Other sets are made from powdered steel. They mix different grades of metal powder and heat those up and press them into shape. A much faster and cheaper way of production. Hardened steel is made from a solid piece of steel and then hardened and tempered. I just hope the roller chain will hold up better than the link chain. Rik

Yes I would recommend at least the one valve cover you have off to change them all out especially if you're doing this on your grand Cherokee on the passenger side valve cover very hard to get out because of air conditioning heater hoses and wiring that are all in the way.
