In an onstage conversation with TED's Chris Anderson, Rothblatt shares her powerful story of love, identity, creativity, and limitless possibility.

Pinguenella : Consciousness is not an entity! This is just another"quest for immortality", another "search for the fountain of youth"! The human mind The human spirit The human soul The human consciousness These are being equated to gigabytes of RAM in the human brain and can possibly be translated to code.Alternatively,it may be possible to mimic the codes,but what will the results be? Artificial intelligence? Artificial consciousness?I noticed that he mentioned"feelings", the currency of Transgenderism! Can emotions be codefied?How is feelings linked to processing, storing,and retrieval of information? Is "feelings" really a trait of femininity? Is this why embracing Transgenderism is marketed as "being enlightened"?Are men being encouraged to "identity as female"to qualify for eternal life?

If you have any semblance of scientific literacy and want to have a laugh, check the work of this quack. www.academia.edu/11819714/You_Are_Photon tl;dr: _my common sense tells me that our physical bodies can't possibly be the "source" of stuff I personally find mysterious, such as human emotions, so it follows that we're actually a photon trapped inside a body, and therefore can't die. Also, when you dream you're actually in parallel universes and stuff._ _Don't mind the whole of neuroscience though, that doesn't count. My gut feeling explanation with no verifiable evidence is totally real, and not something I made up to maintain my delusion of immortality._

perfectscotty "nature has had millions of years to try and figure out how to extend life forms" You are wrong. Living forever or even for extreme lengths of time is not evolutionarily selected for. What is selected for is having a sufficient level of adaptation to be able to mate and propagate your own genes/species. As far as "Nature" is concerned, that is the end-game. "Soon physics will explain religion and vice versa." I'm not sure about physics, but psychology already can explain humanity's fondness of imaginary friends quite well. Rest assured, though, that religion will not and cannot explain science. Religion's role in the scientific world is that people will try their utmost to fit current scientific views with their sacred texts, thanks to how ambiguously written they are. It's getting hard for them though. As we gain more knowledge and ignorance shrinks, so do the shadows where religion hides.

Ya..the interviewer kept going on and on about her gender re-assignment. Why do we need to acknowledge our genders so much to accomplishments. I don't care if she is a gorilla, look what she has accomplished!! She has done so many things that others deemed impossible. She is a true inspiration to any business person or human. I'd bet that if the interviewer should in the future need a artificial organ transplant that gives him 10-30 more years of life, he will be eternally grateful.

For once this really was an astonishing talk. The components aren't all strange but put in one life story it's quite something. The floating gender identity is quite logic. She acted on it though. The achievement of curing her own daughters fatal illness was fantastic, an unbelievable result. Amazing. Her satellite communication is also a huge success. The uploading of personal treats to a file doesn't attract me. I prefer the organ repairs and possibly change of cell development. All in all a truly remarkable person with a remarkable life success. ***** Depends on which definition of "immortal" you are using. I think "Invincible" is most commonly used to describe something that cannot be destroyed. "Immortal" simply means that there is no limit on how long it can live, given ideal circumstances (i.e. not getting hit by a car). Making something that cannot be killed with the application of force is effectively impossible, so it makes no sense to even talk about it in this context, thus the "not aging" definition of immortal.

Why does the media always have to go to town on people that don't practice "traditional" heterosexual relationships?! The interviewer kept going on and on about her gender re-assignment. Interview the person and focus on their accomplishments, not their personal life! We humans certainly have a long way to go for acceptance. I don't care if she is a gorilla, look what she has accomplished!! She has done a dozen things that others deemed impossible. She is a true inspiration to any business person or human. I'd bet that if the interviewer should in the future need an artificial organ that Martine invented that gives him 10-30 more years of life, he will be eternally grateful and looking back to will feel shameful about his focus on her gender.

If a machine looks human and converses with you as if it were human to the point that you can't tell from the outside that it's not human, is the machine actually experiencing anything? What is consciousness? Consciousness is the most salient aspect of a person's life, but do we really understand what it is? At what point, if ever, can we ascribe life or consciousness to a machine? The talk here chose to bypass these questions and the problem of consciousness, seemingly on the *_assumption_* that if an imitation is good enough, then it has the same reality-the same experiential reality?-as the person imitated. It's still a fascinating talk, but, perhaps of necessity, it leaves out a lot that's crucial to such undertakings and their goals.
@SwobyJ
@SwobyJ 9 жыл бұрын
alwaysuseless Most of the time for a long time, it won't be 'experiencing' anything as we define it. AI developments will just be giving technology the tools to express itself once it CAN 'experience' things. There's still developments that futurists think may happen in the 2030-2050s, not 2020s-2030s. The creation of synthetic yet still organic 'human-ish' beings is one potential that would make us question all we think about 'consciousness'.
@alwaysuseless
@alwaysuseless 9 жыл бұрын
Malcolm Swoboda If these technical, synthetic, &/or organic creations proceed to live their own independent lives, contribute to society, write autobiographies, etc., then it will be hard or impossible to deny they have experiential consciousness, but will we be any closer to understanding what consciousness is or how it arises?

Should look into the usage of algorithms like machine learning and deep learning, as well as focused efforts on emulating the networks of neurons within the brain (it would cost lots of computing power and require really good data analysis, but Martine has a large budget) alongside just storing data to imitate the person.

With the satellites, Martine figured out that by making the satellites bigger, and the ground receivers smaller, it's possible to broadcast nation-wide. She wants to live on for hundreds of years through a mind file, but how will that work? in its essence a mind file is an exact replica of you and not you yourself. It gives the illusion that it's one person but it's an entirely different person with stark similarities with a living being. A mind file might be able to absorb their human's data immediately upon each experience but the same can't be said from a mind file to a human mind.
