I remember back when Public Television used to broadcast the entire Opry show live from Nashville on Saturday night during their pledge drive. I think it was March of 1974 they had a bad late season snowfall during one of those broadcasts. As was Marty's tradition he closed the show that night. One of the buses was involved in a fender bender so Marty told everyone that if they stayed he would stay on stage until the roads were clear. He walked off stage at 5:30 am. I was there that night.

I sang this song when I was a youngster, growing up in Louisiana, and it is a sad song indeed. Red Griffin wrote it after his wife left him. He died some years later, in New Orleans, LA and was just 47 years. His version of this song is a great record and you should get it if you ever get the chance.

The thing is that it is a song about suicide and it is a somewhat depressing. Of course, the great Marty Robbins wrings out every drop of sorrowful emotion like only he could. I could easily shed a tear listening to it as Mr Teardrop sang with such conviction and sincerity. Love the singer, hate the song. Thanks for your comment, by the way.

Why do you treat me as if I were only a friend What have I done that has made you so distant and cold Sometimes I wonder if you'll be contented again Will you be happy when you are withered and old I cannot offer you diamonds and mansions so fine I cannot offer you clothes your young body crave But if you'll say that you long to forever be mine Think of the heartaches the tears and the sorrows you'll save While I am writing this letter I think of the past And of the promises that you are breaking so free But to this cruel world I'll soon say my farewell at last I will be gone when you'll read this last letter from me When you are lonely and tired of another man's gold When you are lonely remember this letter my own But don't try to answer though I've suffered anguish untold If you don't love me I just wish you would leave me alone

Little Roy and Jerry Byrd were Marty's favorite steel players. Hoy Hoy can be heard on almost every post from the early Grand Ole Opry show. Those video's were taken from the television Opry show. Marty was as warm and genuine as anyone I have ever met. A misconception about Marty was that he was aloof; that is untrue. He had several layers of friends but those closest to him were like family. Marty was very protective of his personal life and family which led some to think he was aloof.

I think so often of how in the olden days some songs were written about dying for love or gong it alone if someone can't have whom they love. If there is true love then all of the material things shouldn't be the main point of whether to marry or just love someone .Years ago when I married we had very little. However, I always felt like if it truly came down to it I could live in a tent if I had to to be with him. The story here sounds like an object of love keeps in touch to torture someone.

Best version I've heard was Chris O'Connell with Asleep At The Wheel (it's very hard to find; I don't think it's on youtube) Jack Greene's is good too. Too many singers change the words or leave off the last verse to hide that it's a suicide letter.
@pro3tlb15 жыл бұрын
Little Roy Wiggins told me once that Marty wanted him on the recording, that is until Hoy Hoy broke him up with a mournful "Ting-a-Ling" run. "I'll never get through it with you playing like that Marty told him. Little Roy talks about both he and George Morgan tearing up on a live performance of this song on his videos posted on here. Little Roy is also playing behind Marty on the Marty Robbins at the Grand Ole Opry video as well.

Very few country singers have ever committed suicide. I think that's because they let out their pain by writing songs and singing.

Agree about Jack Greene's version, but find nothing special about Chris O'Connel's version which I have in my collection. I would have preferred to hear a Tammy Wynette or a Jeanie Seeley doing the song. Sadly ironic the subject considering what happened in Nashville yesterday.

Have you heard Bobby Sykes singing 'Jimmy And Me' which I posted on youtube? I think the recording is actually Little Roy Wiggins accompanied with a vocal by Bobby. I believe that Roy was one of the few of Nashville's musicians who Marty used to invite to his home in Brentwood.
