Thanks Marty. I started playing a year and half ago after my brother passed away. He was a big reason I started playing because he was a huge fan of music and his favorite artist is Neil Young, so, for me, playing is way for me to stay connected and remember him. I am finally at the point where I am good enough to start trying to play some Neil and am starting with this one, every single note and lyric brings up a thousand memories of my brother. Thank you SO much for all of the amazing content. As you know music can do so much for so many people, so, I truly want to thank you for your guidance and helping me learn to play, and, even more importantly help me continue to remember my brother and heal a bit more every time I play. You are the best. Thanks!

You, Sir, are an actual musician! Many people criticize anyone who doesn't play note-for-note the identical studio rendition of a particular song, but that wouldn't be music, that would be mechanically mimicking music, which is not music and doesn't require any musicianship. I truly appreciate that you teach the song and leave some of the individual, performance-specific nuances to the artist. You are teaching timing and music theory, great foundations for real music, and real performances. Well done, Sir. Well done.

I took guitar lessons 40 years ago and learned a few chords, then somehow I was made the drummer in our garage band. Years later my son played piano then guitar at a VERY high level and continues with music as he attends The University of Oregon. SO, my point is I missed the sound of his guitar in the house so I picked a couple up while thrifting. I was blown away by the fact I actually knew all of the chords I had learned (some better than others). BUT, I've gone through a few of your videos here and can't tell you how presentable and easy you've made it for folks like me. I know these are beginner songs, but I'm a rockstar in my house. LOL. Thanks, Marty! BTW - My son and I used to hang at Norm's and I'm friends with Nick! Okay, I'm just all excited, here. LOL

If you're still struggling trying to figure this out, here's my honest opinion. You need to start by learning how to play/finger a few basics chords properly on the guitar before you try to tackle a tune like this. The chords used in this song are C, F, G, Am, Em, D and a variation of the D used further up the neck to play the cool intro. Start by looking up how to play a proper C, F (simple version, not Bar Chord), G and D. Then practice each chord until you can get it to sound out properly on the guitar and can move between them without too much difficulty. I know it's more fun to jump right in and think you can just memorize a new song and start playing it, but if you don't at least have those basic chords down you will continue to struggle. Take the time and do this first and then start trying out some songs. Once these chords are in your 'muscle memory' you will find learning a new song much easier. Good luck!

Don't know if you're still at it but sounds like this tune is way above your skill level. Give yourself a chance to succeed by choosing something simpler or else you run the risk of your attempt to learn the instrument turning into a source of constant frustration. The key is finding simple enough tunes that you can play keeping the beat the whole way through, from start to finish, even if just "down strumming". You're not striving for perfection in execution here, you're laying the foundation you will build your house on. So, my advice to you? Try something like Bob Dylan's " Knockin' on heaven's door". 15 minutes a day will build up your fingertips and rythmic skills way better and faster than if you only play 1hr on Saturday's...After 6 months of this you won't be thinking you are dum...you'll have realized that you weren't giving yourself the proper framework to succeed and will be eating up new songs like the rest of us...Cheers!
@rlin26483 жыл бұрын
Marty the way you use the chord names to figure out the rhythm and changes/timing here is exactly how it’s done! I do it this way as well, I was actually taught this way. It’s a great way to memorize the chords in the song as well as the timing! You’re a great teacher Marty! Keep up the great work! This is the way songs are learned.

I still hope to make a mark in the music industry.. never too late hopefully... I had a band at school with a guy called Henry Priestman.. he was a founding member of the Chiristians a pretty big band on Island Records in the late 80s.. biggest selling debut album at the time.. Henry left and now has a solo career.. he became the oldest person at age of 58 to get a new record contract and I'm aiming to take over his mantel at the age of 70.. anyway thank you for everything you do.. keep well and keep making great videos best David

This is the first song I ever learned to play the whole way through. Classic song. For me the key to this one is the strumming hand. The finger placement is easy, it’s all in the strumming hand.

Always a big fan of your work. I especially love the way you use chord names to pronounce the timing of the changes. Great teaching point. That’s a big help for getting the timing in our minds. Thanks for everything you give to us. Take care brother.

Hope you’re still at it Marty. Tried thinking through this own my own but your tutorial was the best BECAUSE it was the simplest. So go g the chords is a help and I’d never seen another tutorial teaching the three down/one up strungs for the verses. Brilliant. Thank a lot.

I love this tutorial so so much . As I get older this song makes you feel so much . And the tutorial is so great even the mistake on the on take two teaches us to just play through it. Thank you for your honesty and brilliant way of teaching the old man ❤
