Hi there. I am a beginner and have been taking lessons for 2 months now. After my first lesson in which I was encouraged to look up tabs for some of my favorite songs, I came home and tried to play this for an hour not knowing anything about hybrid picking. So yeah I gave up and got drunk for the first time in a year thinking I must not be coordinated enough to play guitar. I tried again last night and still couldn't even play it once at the 90bpm I think. I decided this time that I have to see someone perform this witchcraft for myself and found you. Thanks so much for the video. I can actually play this now though I need to practice a lot which no longer feels like work thanks to you. Also I have to say using the thumb for the first part throughout the song has cause me a lot of pain. So much so that I have to grab the strings for the first slide with my pinky and ring finger and hit the 9th of the gstring with my middle finger leaving the index free for that 8th grab on the low e. Having to switch from pinky ring then ring middle was confusing at first but it helped me a lot and gave me a little confidence in my blossoming adaptablility. I look forward to learning some more songs from you but one song at a time. Peace Marty!

The Heavy Metal Brothers The longer you have been playing guitar.. the quicker you can pick up new songs. What might take weeks to learn as a beginner can be learned in 30 mins as an intermediate player, and then even less when your advanced for most songs. As you get better the learning becomes exponentially easier.

Thankyou Marty.. I've only been playing 2 weeks I am learning little bits of loads of songs I absolutely love! Its a great feeling, I sometimes improvise with which fingers I use I'm probably picking up some bad habits but I'm never gonna do any gigs or sell any albums I just enjoy doing it so much! I used to just sit in front of my TV playing playstation.. All that time wasted haha! Thanks again!

I started guitar back up in 2020. I played a little in high school (2005-2007) and this video was the first one i found when searching for tutorials. The song was to hard for me at the time so i stopped trying. Today i found the video again after 4 years of practice and was able to lock it down in 30 minutes. Your videos are amazing Marty and seriously help new players like myself. Thanks again!

Hey man, This may be a bit late but i just want to say a massive thank you for doing these video. ive been playing guitsr nonstop for about a month now during the 3rd lockdown over here in the UK. I have strived so far to play songs that i personally enjoy. I have done others like Dont look bang in anger, the scientist, dakota, and a few more to get some technique down but i've been itching to actually learn songs that mean something to me. I learnt otherside (with your help of course) and now i am learning this. I have just got the intro riff down which i thought i wouldn't be able to even get near to playing for another few months at least. Your videos are extremely helpful! Thank you so much, hope you're staying safe!

Marty, I'm no where near you level but please consider some advice: when you're showing the main riff at e.g. 05:15, with the Dm chord you omit the C (on 6th string) with the thumb. This C (IMHO) is how the riff ends naturally before you start the it again from the beginning with the F chord. Not all people follow along the entire video (me being an example, I paused at around 5:40) so I was practicing without this for a bit of time until I realized I was missing this transitional C note. It's a single note, I am not sure why you left it out on a couple of examples you've shown but I believe it'd be more helpful if you always played the riff in its entirety. Also, sticks to my hearing better this way. Thank you for everything, you're great!

I know it's very common now for people to point out John's 'Hendrix-y' embellishments and is obviously a very main point to what makes him such a creative guitarist, but I'd like to beat that drum again some more here. It's just the best. I've seen other people try it and it just doesn't work. Whether it's chromaticism or in the shape, it just works for John and he always knows where to put it, and makes songs interesting to learn because a lot of people try to cover songs and put their own spin or takes on them, but I've almost never seen a RHCP cover of a song John wrote where they played the part different in the cover that actually sounded just as good, much less better.

Yo Marty, instead of using a hammer on in the second part of the opening riff (4:39), slide your middle and ring finger back up a fret (to the 8th and 9th fret respectively). This way, the sliding your ring finger up plays the note that your hammer-on would usually play, and your middle finger will be in the right place to play the note that your thumb plays. This gets around the problem of having to use your thumb, and also makes your fingers less cramped.

Just a tip for learning this song, you can use your index finger to just bar and keep your fingers in the same position for the whole intro part, instead of moving your fingers just slide the bar as you go, that way all the work is in strumming. Hope this helps!
