Hey I’m located in Waterloo. Any good recommendations on where to get parts for the 3L engine?
Awesome thanks for this video, just what I needed! An easy way to get the crankshaft bolt off is the starter bump method; long breaker bar resting on the frame rail, then turn the ignition on for just a sec.

The only thing i had to do was to make a tool with 2 Holes in it to immobilize crankshaft pulley passing 2 bolts of the 4 smaller it has and Hold it to chasis. It worked ,the Bolt was very hard but could take ir off. Sorry My bad english, lot of thanks.

Hey Marty T. You need a slight edit. I did my 99 hilux yesterday All went well. I did replace the water pump in the process. It took a few internet searchs to find out EXACTLY how and where the spring mounts on the lower water pump bolt. Maybe a picture edited in? Other than that a great video. Next job in the exact same job on my Landxruiser diesel.

Absolutely superb video which im sure has helped thousands of 3L engine owners around the world. But i would like to ask if there is an obvious way of knowing for sure if your camshaft seal is leaking? What should we look out for?
@MartyT3 жыл бұрын
Mine had an oil leak from around the front, taking the front cover off confirmed it was from the camshaft seal
@archygrey90932 жыл бұрын
Generally its good practice to replace the camshaft seal when you replace the timing belt, its cheap and pretty easy to do if the timing belt is already off, even if it isn't leaking now it probably would be the next time the belt needs replacing.

Another way to immobilise or stop the crank from turning whilst undoing the bottom crank pulley is to insert a tyre lever thru the front uni joint, or put a 50mm open ended spanner thru the rear uni joints . The cam shaft has a hex for 30mm open ended spanner . Just loosen the cam pulley lock nut and give the pulley a couple of whacks .....Hope this helps guys >>> PS I had a badly cracked head and needed to replace the head with a 2nd hand unit ,,,all went well RT

I am doing a restoration on a 1988 Hilux 2.4 diesel, and fitting power steering, and need to know if the power steering bracket for my 2.4 diesel is the cast iron version. Thanks.

Thanks, need the bracket that is attached to engine block to fit the power steering pump to on my Toyota Hilux 2.4 diesel engine. Been told by one chap I need the cast Iron bracket, that not only is the power steering pump attached to it , but also the engine is attached to the chassis using the same bracket. It quite common on probably most Toyota Hilux models , but their is also on some models a pressed steel version, that is for the power steering pump only. Think the power steering bracket on you vehicle is the cast iron version, from what I could make out . Thanks again. .

In the States we get 100K miles between recommended belt changes. You blokes are getting screwed! ;-)
@hampuslytz53934 жыл бұрын
Nope! :) It's the same here in Finland, with all timing belt intervals, oil changes etc.(with all cars) Beacuse of our cold winters it puts a lot more stress on bearing grease, the rubber of the timing belt, oil in the engine during cold starts and so on. Did a headgasket on my hilux last fall, not even two years on timing belt, and very moderate mileage. Noticed the idler pulley bearing was leaking grease when I was reassembling. No way that would have survived another 85k or so miles :P I know a lot of people that ignore the recommended service intervals, and they're usually the ones bitching the most when shit hits the fan, or in this case when valves hit the pistons ;) (Not saying you're that kind of person, just find it a bit funny :D )
@I_M_Nonno4 жыл бұрын
@@hampuslytz5393 Recommended service is 100,000 MILES in the States. 100,000 Kilometers is the equivalent of 60,000 miles.
@hampuslytz53934 жыл бұрын
@@I_M_Nonno Yeah, that was exactly what I was telling you, we're not getting screwed its a safety featire. Getting screwed would be to have same interval and ending up with s blown up engine :p I was giving an example of why it differs in different regions. Just beacuse we use metric I have no problem grasping the imperial system ;) My point being was that my car that runs mayby 15k kilometers per year, would not have survived the american-standard timing belt interval, due to the idler pulley bearing leaking grease already after 3 years, around 35-40k kms

Why Loctite the crank and cam bolts. surely if they stayed tight after 100 000 klms they wont come loose again after being torqued correctly. Won't is just make it harder next time you try to do this job. I'm a massive fan of Loctite used correctly and in the correct place.

PT Cruiser timing belt replacement. First, remove the engine. 2 days work at home. Nah, let it die. Riddled with electronic gremlins. Pity, as it's tidy, with a low mileage, but the dash is always celebrating some new disaster by lighting up like an Xmas tree, I kid you not, and they'r e always intermittent warnings, so a scan tool is pretty useless...
@andysaunders37082 жыл бұрын
Plus parts ex-USA. And then there's the Jeep. I can see why Chrysler, (or Fiat-Chrylser, or Daimler Benz), crapped out. Jeep and PT made in Austria. Not Australia, but Austria. Bloody rubbish. Pretty bad deal for the money. A 4.7 V8 should last a whole lot longer than 250,000km, but I won't use it anymore, as they're prone to dropping valve seats at about this mileage due to poor design. I don't have the disposable income to buy new heads from the US, and to have them recontidioned in NZ is $2000 minimum, and the $800+ for a gasket set, and while its apart, you maight as well replace the OHC timing chains... I think not. I'm so paranoid about it, having seen the outcome when the HO engines eat valve seats that I haven't started it since it got it's last WoF, and now the battery is flat-as. Gonna get me a Hyundai.
