Honestly half the questionable decision was making that many banelings in the first place against that army. Not only was it mech, but it was mech with half air and a heavy complement of thors, there was basically nothing those banelings would have traded very effectively against. He really needed that gas for more corruptors and spellcasters.

So I had the thought, why would a player like Maru keep doing something as an opener that doesnt win him a game? The answer perhaps it does something he wants besides outright winning the game. Perhaps that Hellbat push is just to drain out all the queen energy

Its pressure. Its not supposed to be devastating, its supposed to try and kill anti air and possibly hit the economy. Also gets an idea of where the queens are at so he knows if he can/cannot use BCs 30 seconds later.

Its about getting the opponent off-guard to deal heavy damage, and its also about how he doesnt want to reveal all his strategy yet.

its more like a prisoners dilemma. If he would never hellbat push, then zerg could cut gas and queens and drone much more early. Hence, he has to hellbat push some percentage of games to ensure the zerg keeps trying to defend against it, although the push itself is negative-EV, over time it creates an advantage because of the cumulative resources zerg invests to defend it.

I guess he wants to keep some sort of pressure out and force the zerg to defend and not rapid fire the drone button. Its not meant to deal damage and you want to get rid of them eventually as he transitions into bio or mech.

The cost of repair a battle cruiser from 0 health is 100/75 + the mining loss from SCV... so killing a muta for every repair is almost an even trade.

Thor has two anti air attacks -- the missile looking one and the one that looks similar to their ground attack. The missile one has splash and bonus damage against light units but still does a lot less damage so it's really only useful against stuff like a giant muta clump, and the other attack is useful against most other things. Of course, a lot of what thors are made to fight against (at least in pro games) is giant muta clumps, so you probably see the missile attack a lot.

I don’t know why more pros don’t do what Maru does. Do damage with the BC’s then jump out when they get low. Too many pros see a clump of units and then jump away without doing any damage
