Fantastic! What an awesome town. Think of the amount of workers that built the castle. Thanks so much. You did put in a lot of work!

Congratulations on making it to the top! The views were worth it! I like these videos of lesser known towns!

You intrepid Traveler! I loved it! The wonderful thing about Portugal is all these little jewels that you find when you turn off a country road. Last few days I was in the Algarve and I visited two wonderful little towns: in the hills was the little town of Santa Barbara, and at the beach where a river meets the ocean is Ferragudo, a very picturesque and quaint old, fishing village, one of the loveliest in Portugal.

I'd read of this fort before. I love these videos you make of these town visits. You made a Bombarral one sometime ago. My father lived there till he died in the late 90s. And I myself visited there in 94. Look forward to your videos. Take care.

I thought at first this was Monsaraz, which we visited with friends from Badajoz many years ago. They are very similar, lovely little towns.

Just amazing Stuart! Thanks for taking us along. You live there you are going to be in good shape from walking about. I just cannot believe there are no railing and handrails on the stairs and walkways! No nanny state present. That would not happen in USA as too many aggressive lawyers!

One of those places on my to-do list. According to the Bradt guide to Alentejo, the opening hours of the castelo are 9am to 9pm in the summer and 10am to 7pm in winter, and the price is quoted as €2.

I'd say there's a 40 km view from that castle top.. probably a 10th century or earlier. Toledo was taken from the Umayyad to Castille in 1080, but Badajoz wasn't until the 12th century I believe, and so would be these Portuguese fort cities , even Lisbon was taken quite late with the help of British and German Crusaders! apparently, I read up on all that for my bus tours thingy ;)

Beautiful place, both the fortification and the interesting landscape. I'm visiting Portugal this autumn; Stu, how's the driving there? ( I've only recently received my driver's licence.)

You should be a bit careful with Portuguese drivers but in general it's OK.

Excellent Stuart. Thanks for taking us along! I cannot believe they have no handrails on the stairs and walkway. No nanny state there! That just would not exist in USA, due to egressive lawyers!
