As someone living in NYC when Spider-Man came out, one of my biggest thrills came from seeing Spidey visit my apartment complex. Wasn't a perfect recreation, but they nailed the placement of so many New York landmarks. And web-swinging was so good I actually wanted to 100% complete the game. That rarely happens to me in open-world video games.

Fun fact: when I was a little boy, I didn't have a PS4 since I was still a Nintendo main, so I watched Jacksepticeye, DanTDM, and Tetraninja play this game (the fact I watched people play the game and this game's DLC should really tell you everything about how revolutionary and replayable it still is to this very day) and every single time, I always cried at the end because I never expected Aunt May to actually die. To this day, Spider Man 2018 is still my 2nd favorite PS4 exclusive (1st being The Last of Us Part 2) but this game will always have a very special place in my heart and my childhood

Yes the game's narrative still has problems and the ending was pretty rushed making Harry's emotional revival scene not hit that hard as Aunt May's death. But the first 2 acts of SM2 and the Anti-Venom scene are still my favorite parts of the game and I still replay the game while listening to videos talking about it

@juhaeerjayran4246 nah not just that I generally dislike this incarnation of miles compared to his first appearance in ultimate comics in 2012 story wise, I felt like the stealth in Sm2 was also pretty mid compared to the first game without the gadget system. Also the story was rushed and they tried to squeeze too much in in too short of a time. Still an okay spider-man game but I enjoyed the first way more. Sm2 obviously has the better web swinging and traversal mechanics though

@@kjr1150 I agree, people don’t understand that this game is better because how they manage to create everything meanwhile the sequel only needs to improve those things which they did but it is still not as impressive as creating it + they failed at improving the most important thing, that being the story and characters. Even some of the gameplay improvements hurt the story, for example MJ being John Wick and one shotting Symbiotes being very unrealistic and out of character.

Regarding the open world, I see what people are saying that it's a Ubisoft map, but I don't see that as a bad thing. It's a meticulous re-creation of a real place, to make the wish-fulfillment experience more authentic and immersive. I'm not clear what else it should be. I consider this game the perfect next step for action superhero games after Arkham Knight. The city was more like a city and less like a game playground, the way Gotham was in the Arkham games. I feel like that's long overdue. The whole superhero fantasy experience takes place in the ordinary world, not a weird post-apocalyptic theme park, where everyone is a bad guy. I want the life of the city all around me as I do my Spider-Man thing. I want bystanders. Because that what it is to be Spider-Man. I hope the next Batman game (if there is one, yeesh!) is more immersive, less of a game, and more of a Batman simulator. As for this world being shallow, I mean, sure, I guess. It's an action game, and the city is just a setting for the action. But that's the point. Go any deeper, and it becomes a Spider-Man RPG. Which, I mean, obviously is the next step. I think it's beyond doubt. A full-blown superhero RPG in a similarly authentic setting, with tons of interaction and side-quests, branching choices leading to multiple endings, and a variety of character builds. Who wouldn't love that?

Actually finished it a while ago. I hated how tedious the gadget management gets, that without certain mods and powers, they just immediately deplete. How stealth is non existent after the first wave of thugs you painstakingly takedown in a hideout because everybody gets alerted immediately after the last guy gets hit. That you can't exactly return to stealthily taking them down bc it's underground or too cramped to find space to hide in. In higher difficulties, it gets annoying having to constantly dodge and shoot gadgets whilst being one shot when you choose to experiment on mods. But despite those issues, I still believe the title still holds amazingly through storylines, dlcs, and with how much content and hidden things you discover by just digging a little deeper into backpacks, sidequests and conversations with characters. The dread of winning as Spiderman and losing as Peter Parker is such a hard dynamic to balance and they absolutely nailed it. Side note: Most of my combat issues were actually solved with Miles Morales. The game offers so much more versatility despite having lesser gadgets and more of a focus on the abilities. I loved the combat gameplay and the stealth, but hated the story plotline. Phin just felt like a hack for being so rude to Miles when he lied yet acts apologetic when she literally plotted to cause a riot in his mom's own rally. Her entire purpose to get back on Roxxon doesn't make sense, she's just out to kill and demolish stuff bc whatever?

With Spider-Man 2 having been out for a while now, I think one of the biggest reason I prefer the first game’s story is that there seems to be a lot more balance. There is more Peter Parker drama outside the mask. The pace is not as fast. Every character gets time to simmer. There are fewer big setpieces (the setpieces in SM2 are great, but don’t add as much to the narrative as smaller scenes tend to do). The first game just feels more cohesive. Not as consistently epic, but there is more buildup to get greater payoffs in the end.

I think the stealth from Spider-Man 1 is better than in Spider-Man 2. You can use a lot of your gadgets in stealth. The web lines are fun but they kind of make stealth even easier. Stealth peaked in Miles Morales. With his temporary invisibility (but some Roxxon enemies have infrared lenses), introducing wall and ceiling takedowns and that gadget you get from Aaron, which you can use in those specific outlets or something that made it really powerful). It would’ve been nice if SM2 kept most of your gadgets and allowed you to swap them out as you do with the abilities. It feels like a weird downgrade in a gameplay sense, even though I don’t use gadgets that much (I use them even less in SM2… I barely pay them any mind). It feels perhaps weirder in a story sense. Some of the gadgets you acquire are canonical. Otto crafts the impact web. Jeff’s stun gun gives you the electric web. Peter’s old designs for a web bomb remind him to finish it. Peter uses Demon tech to craft trip mines. And Miles gets those electric mines from Aaron and those holographic guys from Peter (where did he get the money for such tech? 😂). It feels weird that both Spideys would neglect these gadgets. Spider-Man is always a techy genius so the gadgets just really suit the character. If he has the resources/money to acquire them, at least. Maybe it’s good some of the gadgets were omitted. Suspension martixes don’t exactly scream ‘Spider-Man’. But if you gave Peter the four canonically crafted gadgets back, he’d have another 4 gadgets to switch between.

I still really don't see the Arkham comparision with the combat. They play next to nothing alike. Yes both have a Spider-Sense indicating you to press a button to avoid incoming damage, but that's basically where the similarities end. Biggest letdown in this game for me was how they didn't do anything with the heavily advertised and hyped up parkour mechanic

Spider-Man 2018 definitely holds up in general, but playing the open world part can be agonizing. The 165 Random Crimes (80 of which are introduced in Act 3, and is inflated to 205 with the DLC) you have to do to get 100% really drags the side content part of SM1 down badly. Combined with the combat’s lack of depth and Spidey being hilariously overpowered with the gadgets, the game starts to collapse under its own weight.

Spider-Man 1 is one of the best games that I’ve ever played. Amazing gameplay and story. However, I think the main story for the second game is a bit better than the first because of one reason, MJ. MJ was a bit irritating in the first game but her attitude improves in the second. The relationship drama between Peter & her gets really old. I think they should’ve been a couple in the first game and they get married in Spider-Man 2. I do like the theme of family with the main villains in both games. The first one involves a father/son relationship(Otto) and the second game is about brothers(Harry). Both games 9/10.

Obviously the first game is great but I think the second story is slightly better because: 1. there’s no unnecessary break up drama with MJ(she was a bit irritating in the first game). The drama with MJ is getting pretty old 2. Having a villain win(actually accomplish his goal). Yes, I’m talking about Kraven. His finale against venom was excellent. 3. The theme of brothers when it came to Peter and Harry. 4. Miles fighting against his desire for vengeance against Li and how he helps Peter break free from the suit. Showing that Peter isn’t alone as a hero anymore But still even though both games have flaws, The stories are still fantastic. Both are a solid 9/10.
