For decades, Marvel has shied away from letting Peter Parker really grow up and come into his own as an adult. In this video, I talk about why he'd benefit from being allowed to get older, even in the MCU.

Man, I want a Peter Parker film than a Spider-Man film. A Peter Parker film that just so happens to be Spider-Man. The struggles of being a college student/young adult and being Spider-Man. What it takes/means to become an adult and why we have/need to be one and that it's unavoidable A intimate, yet mature story.

Peter Parker was made a teenager in the MCU to contrast the already established Iron Man, Cap, Thor in the same way Peter Parker contrasted with the already established Fantastic Four, X-Men who were older in the comics. The way NWH ends clearly signifies the beginning of an adult Peter Parker. I feel like Holland could approach the role with less of his "aw shucks" Marty McFly anxious energy moving forward.

It always baffled me how people keep saying that being a teenager is one of Peter's core traits, when most of his stories occur during his more mature years. High school in Spidey's timeline is only the first bunch of ASM issues. The notion of Peter having to be a teenager is something that I believe has mainly been pushed by USM

Stan lee wrote Amazing Spider-man until issue 100. Peter graduates in issue 28 and even the most iconic story from Ditko's time on the title (Masterplanner Saga/If This Be My Destiny) takes place when Peter is in college. This obsession with keeping Peter in high school is irrational.

As much as I love classic High School Peter, the PS4 Spider-Man was fucking amazing and so relatable because he was so much more mature and older. Possibly my favorite interpretation of the character so far. Like you said, I think it's likely (and I hope) Sony & Disney will go with that route now that the "Home" Trilogy is over and Tom Holland is taking a break from acting. Like I said a year or so ago somewhere else, I'm totally fine with highschool Peter stories, as long as their good, and as long as we have somewhere to go afterwards, like college era, and mid to late 20's era and beyond. Unfortunately, we don't get a lot of that, since adaptations either end suddenly, or if they do end, it's just Peter leaving school. MCU Peter is the best position right now to do college era tales and beyond, as long as cooler heads are in charge. Comics side on the other hand is STILL in that stagnation period with MJ's "Will-they/won't-they", and I'm getting tired. As messy as Superman in comics is currently with how it got to the current status quo, At least Clark and Lois were together, married, and with a kid, for many years now. I just want that for Peter, which we were SO CLOSE to in the late 90's, and have seen work in Life Story, Renew your Vows and of course Mayday Parker's MC2.

Completely agree. Kinda funny but the high school spidermen (Ultimate, spectacular, even MCU) always end up feeling more like adults than most the ones that have been outta high school and college, and it’s because they grow into men. As opposed to a lotta 616 comics where every time he grows, they pull the rip chord, or Raimi sorta stuff where they just feel like a beaten puppy with zero confidence. There are exceptions. PS4 spidey began kinda that way but grew to feel more in control. Even McGuire’s spidey in NWH felt more confident and fit perfectly as a camp councilor sorta guy. I’m stoked for where MCU spidey will go as the first one to get enough time in high school to feel like college is a change and have to exist without his typical support network. Let’s see if he continues growing or if they pull the rip chord

This is the reason why I love Logan. It's the fact that he's old there and that allows him to grow on what happened before in the timeline of the movie. It makes the movie mature as it is with the character and I think that's one of the highlights of that movie. It feels different from the Logan that we saw from the X-Men films to this Wolverine film and I hope while not the taking the same mature and r-rating route as Logan did, I hope the MCU take Spider-Man into the same route but with more darker themes.

I always preferred 30s-aged spider-man. His character really shines through with some more of the existential dread and financially exhaustion and burnout and crises that comes with aging. The main way teenage spider-man gets to show growth is by going through violent personal tragedies stemming from individual mistakes. Adult spider-man gets to show growth through introspection on a lifetime of failure. Which I think is more universally relatable.

There were rumors that Fiege wants MCU Spider-Man to be like the Harry Potter films, having Peter grow throughout multiple films. It really all depends on Tom, hopefully the writers of the films bring strong enough scripts for him to still be interested in the role. The money will be there obviously, but a great story will be more important. I like in him in the role, and I want him to stick around long enough to pass the torch to Miles, as an adult though. Doing it in this trilogy feels premature for the character, there's still so much room for growth and mature stories.

@@Raccon_Detective. Honestly, if they had just excluded Venom but kept the black suit arc, it would've been a much better movie and kept with the theme of him learning about vengeance and forgiveness. Arad thought about splitting the movie in two, but said he couldn't think of a satisfying intermediate climax (which I call bullshit on). They should've saved Venom for Spider-Man 4. The inclusion of Gwen Stacey was also a decision by Arad that was unnecessary, and any romantic tension between MJ and Peter shouldve been saved for a fourth film with Venom's "unrequited love" for Peter being a parallel. The whole amnesia plot with Harry should've also been cut since it's such a cop out. Either way, it's interesting reading about the development of the OG trilogy. The first movie was largely written by James Cameron (who is a brilliant filmmaker), and then just polished by David Koepp, Scott Rosenberg, and Sam Raimi. The next movie had even more writers submitting drafts but Raimi and Sargent picked and chose what they liked (and also drew upon "Spider-Man, No More"), so ultimately they were the screenwriters. The third movie is where things started to flounder because of studio interference and Avi Arad, but also because Raimi was creating material from scratch rather than adapting it if that makes sense? It's the same issue D&D faced after George R.R. Martin left Game of Thrones. He's a good director but he needs a solid script as a foundation (which he can polish).

letting Peter gets old means letting everyone else get old as well, it wouldn’t be impossible to do but pretty problematic in terms of pacing and would eventually lead to a full universe reboot every so often just to bring back popular characters i don’t need Peter to become an elderly anytime soon but i’d love to see him with a stable job, marriage, and a kid or two. For some reason Marvel is scared for Peter to hit 30 or even push it, in his previous run 2 volumes ago, he was confirmed 28, had a relationship with MJ and was at a solid spot in his life in his last run he was de-aged back to 25 and in his latest one he’s now single again, with no job, no friends and struggling to make ends meet… for the like the millionth time. Marvel is too scared to have Peter develop and have that development stay permanent unfortunately this means Miles and his generation will also stay a teenager forever, or for as long as Peter is the age he’s at, sucks cuz i’d like to see him move onto the next stage in life. At least spiderverse is doing that but i’d like to see it done in the comics too

Meanwhile Franklin Richards who was introduced in 1968 just hit puberty. Then there was Curt Connors' son who was ten in the 60s and aged two years in almost 6 decades. During this time Harry Osborn had son who is almost ten now, then Eddie Brock had a son after him but that son is older than both these other kids. Batman Beyond is still one of the best Batman takes out there, and to this day it's depiction of Bruce Wayne is one of the strongest and most striking. And I think that one of the things that makes Invincible work so well is that Omni-Man isn't *just* an 'Evil Superman' but that we also get a lot of him being a 'Domestic Superman', where he's just being a dad and a husband (with some sinister vibes beneath).

For me I grew up with a young Peter Parker and so I will always have a fondness for that. But I grew, so I also feel like he should too. The character should work at any age, so they really should write stories for him, for every age. Also I kind of hope Holland decided to keep playing him for a long time just so they'll have to let the movie version grow up. I mean, I'd also just like to keep seeing him in the role because he's good, but at this point I especially just want to see Spidey get older with us.

Thank you! Some of my favorite Spidey eras were 80s long term relationship post college/married Spidey. Sure it kinda went off the rails with Clone Saga and never fully recovered but there were still plenty of gems in that era. We’ve gotten both younger and older Batman. Let’s get the same and get a live action movie older Spidey (maybe with Garfield?).

Highschool Spidey is fun but I think he works best in his 20's. A young, motivated yet traumatized (because of losing Ben, Gwen, etc) and just highly overwhelmed by his life and morality. Whenever something bad is happening he feels like it's his fault and he needs to fix it and when he does he feels shitty because he thinks he didn't do it good enough or fast enough. And besides that almost every relationship doesn't get the attention it deserves. May, MJ or any other friend falls short and even if he handles all that, he still have to earn money for just living. All that and he still does an amazing job, that's why I love him that much. Maybe an older version (Old Man Logan but in his 40's) would work but I guess Marvel wouldn't do it, unfortunately that's not blockbuster enough for the MCU

No. I think they should restore his an MJ's marriage, allow him to be a more mature adult, but he should never be over his mid-30s or so. I think that there are certainly stories to tell with him being older, and they can do that in projects like the ones you did highlight, but it would lead to _fewer_ stories overall, not enough to fill 30+ issues per year.

My expectations for MCU Spidey is to grow not just as a character, but also as a story. Past films have been stuck for so long in the high school that the tone of the movies has been focused mostly in the teen comedy. With No Way Home humbling Peter in the hardest way possible, I hope to see a much more mature person. Now that he understands what is to have a responsability, they show him putting Spider-Man more above himself, until it drives him to understand why it's so important to keep doing it, akin to "Spider-Man 2" (2004). By the third movie in this trilogy, I want to see him adapted to this lifestyle, working with less struggle, paying his bills, cultivating relationships and doing the hero thing, where the challenge is above that and he will reach the next level, which might be retiring and teaching a younger Spider-Man. I also hope to see a more serious type of film with darker themes to reflect Peter's personality. Spidey has a lot of crime underworld background villains, if they want to make something similar to Spectacular Spider-Man season 2, they need to do them justice. My greatest hope is for a heavier Spider-Man movie so Daredevil, Punisher and Kingpin can really show what they can do in terms of violence.

My favorite Spiderman stories are from that narrow span of time in the first civil war arc where Spiderman outed his own secret identity to the world and then went back to his day job as a high-school science teacher. The ideal Spiderman story for me is middle aged high-school science teacher Peter Parker semi retired from hero work and married to Mary Jane. He still patrols every now and then and he answers the phone every time the Avengers or X-men call, but the main thing he does is train his daughter and possibly Miles Morales to be a new generation of spiders. The biggest failure of recent marvel comics was Renew Your Vows not being the Spiderman that survived the brand wide continuity reset.

This is one of the reasons why superman has be reinvigorated. While his current continuity is super complicated, he's moved forward in a organic way. He's married lois lane, putting a end to their will they-won't they, and had a child (without lex), allowing for writers to explore his new status quo and grow as a character more than any other comic character. And this has seeped into other media aswell, like superman and lois, which is has been amazing.

One of main reasons why Spider-Man became legendary in each generation is because he's the most relatable hero to the widest margin of readers. A high school kid who has real world issues from bullying, to poverty, to girl problems even though he has great power lol he's still just like us. Literally ANY kid can relate to him and learn valuable principles from his character. It's not like X-men who were created due to the civil rights era and other minority issues or any other hero who focuses on specific disabilities or ethnicities (Daredevil, Luke Cage, Kamala Khan, etc). So i understand why they keep Peter Parker young, he's the ultimate "blank canvas" for teenagers because he fits so well with any race, ethnicity, gender, etc. Now with the introduction of Miles Morales, a pretty successful heir to the Spider man legacy, they could be focusing more on an aging Peter.

The thing about spider-man getting older (when I say older I mean he has kids/has a stable job) is that a big part of the appeal of spider-man is the relatability of his struggle dealing with his personal life, whether it be keeping a job or trying to maintain the relationships with those close to him. When you make him older the appeal isn't as wide reaching as he's got things figured out. On a personal note stories when he's older kinda irk me because its feels like they ignore that being spider-man puts those he cares about in danger and just generally interferes with his life but you expect to me believe that he's in a stable marriage and is able to raise a child comfortably while also having a secret identity. In these stories they usually handwave the explanation and give a tl;dr basically amounting to he just figured it out.

Thank you! This is what I have been saying for years! I grew up from my teen years looking up to spiderman (especially the comics), I'm a Spider-man biggest fan by definition. I feel totally related to his story. But as I grew older, Spider-man didn't. I got married, started my own business, and became a business owner with several employees, while Spider- man still living off scraps and living with a roommate? There's where I can no longer relate to him. How can he still be my hero if I have outgrown him? I know that Marvel tried to turn him into this new "Tony Stark" by giving him a huge corporation, "Parker Industries" but that's also not relatable. That's not him. What they should've done instead, is make him a 'small business owner'. That's relatable. That's possible. And that is allowing him to grow, while also giving him realistic money and decision-making problem. We, adults, have problems too. Let us relate to Spider-man one more time, and let the newer generations look up to Miles and Kamala Khan.

i would love it if Peter actually aged and got older in the comics, he definitely deserves as he’s been in his mid 20s for the past like, 30-40 years lmao that said, peak spider-man for me is high school spider-man. The best part of Spidey being in high school is that he’s a kid, every adult can relate to being a kid but not every kid can relate to being a adult, so it’s like a perfect meeting point for all fans. i also like that age of spidey cuz he seems to juggle a lot of things i also can relate with. Not being understood by parental figures, not being the most popular in school, dealing with curfews, having a part time job plus dealing with school assignments, all on top of being spider-man, a kid vigilante with a naive outlook on life due to his age. It’s why i think Ultimate Spider-Man worked so well, because it really emphasized that Spider-MAN isn’t a “man”, it’s a kid still learning the ropes. Irony at it’s best which is why i think it sucks Insomniac is washing over the kid aspect of Spider-Man’s life so quickly. They aged Miles up so quick from 15 to 18 in just two games lmao, and Peter’s story started so far after he was bitten, we barely know anything about it. I get spidey as an adult is so beloved, but it’s wild to think there’s only been one Spider-Man story with a fleshed out high school life. Yeah it was paced really bad in Ultimate Spidey but 616 had peter graduate in less than 30 issues lmao, and even then he was originally 17 when he was bitten, so we only saw his senior year, he was later retconned to 15 when he got bitten but even then we didn’t see any of his other high school years and the one we did see was over like that anyway that’s my rant of my favorite version of spidey lol, keep up your good work midnight

I 100% agree in having Spider-Man age. I grew up watching the Raimi films, the 90s Spider-Man as well as the MTV Spider-Man. So I was pretty used to him being out of high school at the very least. I think also for audience sakes, having a character like Spider-Man age could actually help a LOT. Because growing up and adulting is hard, and for me, Spider-Man is a character I can relate to in those moments when it feels like the world is unfair. Spider-Man 2 really did this well with having Peter balance his personal life as well as superhero life that is incredibly relatable for those that start to experience the real world, complex relationships, stress, burnout and so many other things. And just as much as people loved Miles Morales in Spiderverse, the love that people have for Peter B Parker shows that audiences and fans really appreciate a Peter that goes through a lot in life, but still found a way to get back up, even if it took him some time.

To this day I can't believe they took Ganke from Miles, renamed him Ned and served him up as a Harry equivalent. I think one thing with super heroes is that the idea of aging, settling down or giving up the gig is not super, inherently. Most people settle down and some may feel that life does get less exciting, less super. I think that Marvel can see how this would just inherently be less interesting, just because it would mean Spider-Man has a routine. Also keeping him young sells more to the young people, so, yeah. They’re the ones playing video games, going to the movies and reading comics.

I like the version of Peter in Into The Spiderverse. His an old & jaded Fighter yet still the same kid he used to be. Jake Johnson & Chris Pratt both did great performances and their voices fit Peter. If they make an Older Adaptation of Peter they should cast one of them as Peter in hus 30s or 40s.

I came up with an idea for a Spider-Man franchise a while ago. A semi-adaption of Spider-Man: Life Story. Have it decided into 3 trilogies. 1st trilogy - Highschool 2nd trilogy - College/Adult 3rd trilogy - Married Man
