Today Ben dives into the Marvel Cinematic Universe to try and answer a question that has been plaguing the fandom since Age of Ultron - Was Captain America ALWAYS worthy enough to wield Mjolnir? Or was his guilt over not telling Tony the truth about his parents holding him back?

To me Thor’s “I knew it” implies he knew before Endgame that Cap was worthy. But the only time we have where Thor would’ve realized was during the scene in Age of Ultron. Just look at his face. So yes I think he was always worthy, but what you said about not feeling worthy makes a lot of sense
@_helvetixa
@_helvetixa 4 жыл бұрын
Omg like he knew that just it moving means that cap was worthy, but he also respected him as a friend cause cap was probably going through issues. Like, he knew cap could actually pick up the hammer but didn’t die to cap not feeling worthy himself, but instead of calling him out on it, he doesn’t say anything and let’s him figure it out himself. That would be so wholesome if it was true ;w;

@WVBigfoot
@WVBigfoot Жыл бұрын
Just gonna jump in here, 3 years late to the party, to kinda play devil's advocate. While I will agree that Thor's reaction in Endgame seems to indicate he knew Cap was worthy all the way back in Age of Ultron, it's important to remember that the Russo Brothers only INTERPRETED the "budging Thor's hammer" scene in AoU to mean that Cap was worthy all along, and of course if they believed that they'd naturally have Thor react in Endgame as if that were the case, BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN THE WRITERS OF AOU INTENDED THE SCENE TO BE INTERPRETED THAT WAY. With Civil War slated to come out the following year, Cap's lie (and the implications surrounding it) would have been on the forefront of all Marvel writers/directors minds. So it makes complete sense for the writers of AoU to include a scene of Cap budging Thor's hammer as a cheeky way of hinting at that ONE PESKY LITTLE THING keeping Cap from being TRULY worthy, that of course would be revealed to everyone in Civil War the next year. That being said, what all this really reveals is that we're dealing with fictional characters; characters that have been written for by a dozen different people over the years, all with different (and unwittingly conflicting) visions and intentions. So it's certainly possible that Cap wasn't worthy in AoU, (because the writers of AoU intended it to be that way) AND he was worthy all along (because the Russo Brothers intended it to be that way). Irreconcilable incongruities like this are to be expected in decade-spanning cinematic epics.

Kyle Pietrusiewicz it’s actually the exact opposite. Odin decides Thor is unworthy when he acts like a King who is more concerned about winning wars than preventing them. When Peter stays on the ship in Infinity War, he isn’t doing it to charge at Thanos and his army, he’s doing it to so he can help the rest of the people on Earth, just as Odin is doing for Asgard.

The difference between thor and cap was that Cap was keeping secrets though. He's scolded Natasha, Nick fury, and Tony about keeping secrets from others while doing the same just to spare his own feelings. He was being selfish, hypocritical, and lying about something pretty messed up. Thor was struck with sadness over his failure to stop Thanos. Also the pep talk from his mom might've helped with his depression lol.

It’s a comic book movie, real world science doesn’t apply. For instance, one of Cap’s ability in the comics is that he can see faster than bullets and dodge them (briefly shown on top of the taxi in The First Avenger). Given that, it’s very easy to assume he just stopped as he has those kind of reflexes. In the AOU scene, it also subtly shows his grip loosen and the handle slide through his hands at the exact moment the 43 pound Mjolnir moves. His second “attempt” is overly exaggerated, Mjolnir does nothing, and he plays it off like a dad letting their kid win a game.

@jonathanh5872

Coming back to this video, (to me) there’s a reasoning to all this; and it lies with WHO Thor is. The enchantment put on the hammer and Thor’s development isn’t about getting power back, it’s about learning what it truly means to be a leader, a PRINCE, THE FUTURE KING. My interpretation is that the enchantment and hammer is effectively the crown. Translated to “If who finds this is worthy of protecting my people after I’m gone, this power will allow you to do so.” I truly believe that although Odin loved Thor, he was more than willing to have someone else on the throne; he’s most angry at how Thor failed as a future king by starting a war and there was a real possibility that he wouldn’t be able to change. He believed Thor had THE ABILITY, but at least at that moment not the heart. I think that’s what it means to be worthy. I think Steve could lift the hammer because he was a leader in the truest sense of the word. His principles make him WORTHY of being king of Asguard if the need was there. There are many amazing heroes in the MCU, but few I would say that are worthy of being that king. Thor: The battle hardened Warrior-King Steve: The defender of the defenceless Vision: The hyper-intelligent Diplomat It’s about having the responsibility of all those lives and doing what’s best for them. At least that’s how I see it…

While there are people getting upset over it now, there are many male terms used as general terms because that's how they've been for a long time, this comes from origins in male dominant societies where females just weren't counted, things may have shifted away from those ideas, however common phrasing has not fully. For example people might think it rude or offensive, but I use the term "guys" to refer to any group of people regardless of gender, simply out of habit and because I myself am male, though I don't regularly talk to or about that many people

Also I'm not sure if Steve "knew" or KNEW. I personally think he "knew" as in he was pretty sure The Winter Soldier did it, but had no actual proof, as Zola gave Hydra as a whole credit for the assassination, not The Winter Soldier specificly, and figured it would only make his and Tony's already tenuous relationship even worse if he told him or risk his best friend being hunted when he had no confirmation or any idea where he was. I also think he justified it as such saying "I don't know for sure so why open that can of worms?" That's why I think he said yes in CW, he was saying yes because he knew in his gut despite the lack of proof.

Yeah there are others that are totally willing to die too, but Tony has already put himself on that line twice before Age of Ultron and the Mjolnir party scene. So the requirements to be worth has to be something more than just "willing to die to save others".

I don’t believe that argument that he could always pull the hammer. I believe his arch was always going this way, his problem was that he could not live without war. Scarlett Witch makes him have a nightmare and his nightmare was that the war was over. He could not live without war. As soon as he lives in the present day he is always fighting something and he can’t do anything but fight. But there is a moment in Endgame when he sees Peggy Carter in the past he has a moment of realisation: he finally realised that he can live his life without war, he can live his life with Peggy. As soon as he knows this he can wield Thor’s Hammer. When Thanos attacks, Cap is finally fighting to end the fight, rather than fighting to fight a fight. He is fighting to live with Peggy.
@alyssa6918
@alyssa6918 4 жыл бұрын
That's a very good argument, Cap probably did like to fight. When you really think about it though, would a person that would fight just for the fun of it be willing to lay down their life for other people? Especially when they're mainly strangers? I think he fought for the people of the world he lived in and for the people he loved, so he was always worthy. Good point though, I wouldn't have thought about it that way if I didn't see your comment.
@SeraphimCramer
@SeraphimCramer 4 жыл бұрын
@@alyssa6918 It's entirely possible to do both. No one said he was fighting because he liked it, though. He was fighting because he basically didn't know what to do with himself in times of peace. Because without the fight, he just didn't have anything to really live for. That's why the proper ending to his story was going back, & actually finding peace for himself, rather than dying a hero's death like Tony.

I think Ben's idea that Cap didn't consider himself worthy is the most elegant solution. If he was worthy all along and consciously chose not to lift the hammer, that kind of cheapens the payoff when he finally wields it. There's no growth to the character if he's choosing not to lift the hammer and then one day just changes his mind. Well reasoned Ben!

I 99% agree with you. I also think Cap had doubts about himself and couldn’t believe he was worthy. However, because he believed he was unworthy, he was deemed unworthy and couldn’t lift it. Until he could accept he was worthy, even if he tried to lift it he couldn’t. I think there’s a mistake in believing there’s one quality the hammer looks for. Thor forgot his selflessness, Cap needed to find his confidence.
