One of the most famous moments in Avengers: Age of Ultron sees Thor daring the other Avengers to try and pick up his hammer, Mjolnir. Predictably, no one is able to, until they get to Captain America. Cap seems to get the thing to budge, but he doesn’t actually lift it, to the relief of Thor. However, Avengers: Endgame sees him wielding the hammer at a heroic moment, which led many fans to believe that he was actually able to lift it the first time. Okay hear me out, in Age of Ultron Cap couldn't weild Mjolnir because he still had the guilt of hiding from Tony who was his parent's killer. But in Civil war he is free of the guilt after he tells Tony who's killed his parent's. Hence that makes him worthy in all aspects after Civil war and thats why we get to see him lift the hammer cause he is finally worthy

Personally, I have always seen that moment in Age of Ultron much differently than other people. While I do believe Steve was always "worthy" of the hammer, I have always thought Steve was only trying to lift the hammer to appease the group rather than for his own use. He saw that his comrades put their whole souls into trying to lift the hammer and he didn't want to make things about him or make their efforts appear to be useless. He realized he could wield the hammer but seeing as there was no need to, he tried to hide it to keep the overall morale of the group up. Honestly, I think Mjolnir sensed this and after "letting Steve know" he could wield it by moving, Mjolnir honored his heart.

I honestly think that's how we're supposed to see that scence. If you watch and listen closely, there is a very distinct noise when he first grabs the hammer, the exact same noise we hear in the movie later when Vision picks the hammer up below the edge of the screen, albeit a lot softer. To add to that, as soon as this sound is heard the camera immediately focuses on Thor looking concerned in background. I've always assumed that when Thor screams "I KNEW IT" in Endgame, he meant that he knew Cap could lift the hammer from that moment on. Obviously not fully confirmed but he was suspicious.

Steve isn't one to really give a damn if people are or are not impressed by him or respect him. He just does what he honestly believes is the right thing to do, and he is also incredibly humble, having basically no ego or pride to mess with his head (unlike someone like Tony who has some ego/pride issues, Hawkeye & Widow are basically just glorified assassins [albeit heroic ones], Banner has his self-loathing and constant struggle with Hulk for control mucking him up). This is why *Vision* was also capable of lifting Mjolnir, he was literally the very definition of an "innocent" as he had pretty much just been "born" and even then his primary goal was to protect others and like Cap he had little interest or concern about how others viewed him for it, he just did what he believed was the right thing to do. However, it's possible that during Civil War, Vision may have become unworthy because he was "willingly" attacking and fighting his own friends, while Cap only fought the other Avengers when he was left with no other feasible alternative.

I think it’s as simple as this-he could lift it in Age of Ultron, but saw the concern on Thor’s face and decided to stop. Steve is a soldier, and always does what is good for the unit. There was also no reason for him to wield that power, as power is not something that Capt. America yearns; he’s driven by duty. He didn’t lift the hammer because he thought Thor wasn’t ready to handle this development, and duty didn’t call for it. In Endgame, when the stakes were super high, the whole world was at stake and Thor was about to be killed, he knew he needed to step it up and needed the hammer to fight Thanos. He didn’t need it before, duty didn’t call for it, so he let it go.

I think that Thor summoned Mjolnir on Asgard in order to confirm for himself whether he was still worthy or not. After the events of the film Avengers: Infinity War, Thor was filled with shame and doubt. He thought himself to be a failure. Cap is always humble and that’s part of the reason why he could always pick the hammer up. But whether cap was worthy or not, he wouldn’t pick it up back then. For me, what made Steve worthy was self-actualization; his journey from the First Avenger up to Endgame is what enabled him to wield Mjolnir. The "worthiness" enchantment of Odin referred to the realization of one's true potential. In AoU, Steve nudge Mjolnir but couldn't lift it because it was a betting game, nothing serious or world-ending there but come Endgame,Thor needed help and Mjolnir responded accordingly to Steve's worthiness. Steve maybe a humble and righteous, but his conflict in Winter Soldier, Civil War even in Infinity War made him question himself if he really is doing what is right that's why we got Nomad Cap. Sharon's speech in CW and his reunion with Peggy in Endgame provided him the stability and a goal to strive for. The smirk on Thor's face in AoU and his "i knew it" reaction in Endgame indicates personal growth; Odin's question "are you the god of hammers" is one of Thor's self-actualization moment. In Endgame, PTSD Thor found himself worthy again thanks to Frigga's "success in who you are" talk.

I can’t believe some people still don’t believe or get why Captain would do it. It’s called “letting your man save face.” I once wrestled with my pops when I was 16 and he was in his 40s. Mom and family was watching us on the grass. I didn’t destroy him even though I could have. I had to let my dad keep some of his pride so I made it tough for him so He knew I could kick his butt, without actually kicking his butt so that he could walk away head high. If you don’t get why people let others “save face” then you’re probably a selfish person with no friends! Also you probably won’t get very far in life if you’re always showing people up. You have to let other people win sometimes. It doesn’t matter if it’s 60/40 or 70/30. Just fold your winning hand once in a while. You’ll see many more friends and opportunities if you do this.

I remember the first time Cap lifted Mjolnir in the comics, it was an issue of Avengers in which Ironman and Captain America were fighting over whether Tony Stark was right or wrong to go around destroying every suit he ever made for the US military. Thor wasn't sure who was right or wrong, either, but shortly thereafter, in the middle of battle with some weird alien critters, Captain America picked up Thor's hammer and cut a swath through them all and then threw the hammer back to Thor. Curiously, there was no lightning bolt and no transformation into the character of Thor as had happened for Beta Ray Bill and a couple of other people, but he did gain far more strength than he had possessed previously. But Cap picking up Mjolnir made it clear to Thor that Cap was right and Stark wrong. The most dramatic transformation into Thor scene was the time Loki turned Thor into a frog, and after a brief sidetrack to save the citizens (and frogs) of New York from being poisoned by a bunch of rats, Thor the frog picked up Mjolnir on his back and was transformed into a 6'6" Thor-frog. Thor-frog returned to Asgard and proceeded to beat the crap out of Loki. Thor's conversion back into himself was a kind of deus ex machina moment (or the reverse), but it brought the Warriors Three into the story, sort of.

I always thought that after the events of Winter Soldier, Steve had a shred of doubt within himself and his purpose that prevented him from lifting Mjolnir. After CW and Infinity War he was more sure of what he was fighting for, so he was able to lift the hammer. That's my head-canon and I'm sticking to it.

When he realized he could lift it he quickly chose not to because he realized it could have a negative impact on Thor. He didn't want to hurt his friend so he let Thor have his moment. He truly is worthy.

Wasn't a similar thing done in the comics where Cap was only able to pick it up during a fight, because it is like to be worthy, besides just being good or whatever like most people think, you have to be in like a state of mind of wanting to do battle, like that of a Norse hero.

Idk why people say cap could lift it before, no he couldn't because he had guilt and kept secrets from tony about bucky being the killer of tony's parents etc., the hammer only chooses with those pure of heart, obviously cap is very pure of heart and cares about others and puts them first as priority, before himself (don't believe me? Watch Cap America the first avenger how he covers his whole body onto a fake grenade thinking it's real just to sacrifice himself for others safety even if those soldiers treated him like dirt). That being said, he wasn't able to lift it due to the fact of the secrets he kept from tony, in the end of civil war, he apologized to tony through mail with a flip phone, giving an apology for all the hurt he caused him and that he will be there for him just as long as he dials him for assistance. Ever since he apologized to Tony through mail (even tho that's a cruddy way of apologizing, but he was wanted so he had little choice) he was lifted of that guilt and secrets from him, which made him worthy of holding the hammer.

It may be that way in the cinematic universe but the comics it’s whomever Odin deems worthy. As seen in one of the most popular examples where Superman lifts it to deal a single blow then finds out he’s unable a few moments after. Thor tells him Odin felt it was in good hands and temporarily lifted the ban.
