Marvel Vs Capcom 2 is an arcade sensation and has long been held as one of the Dreamcast's best arcade ports. After the discontinuation of the Dreamcast, the game ended up being ported to other systems including the PS2 and Original Xbox. These ports have long been slammed as inferior to the Dreamcast release on the internet and the Xbox version indeed contains the lowest review scores across the board. But is the Xbox version of Marvel Vs Capcom 2 really that awful on Microsoft's first home console? In this week's episode of Quick Compare, I put the 2 side by side to see for my self once and for all if this game has deserved the reputation it has gotten!

@@aaronclayton8958 my brother got the Japanese copy of ps2 version and we noticed the punching sound effects are bad compared to Dreamcast and arcade versions such a shame Xbox and PlayStation 2 ran guilty gear x2 one of the most demanding 2d fighters of the generation there shouldn’t be a excuse for PS2 and Xbox to have lower sound effects

I don’t have my Dreamcast anymore, honestly wish I never got rid of it and I truly miss playing MvC2 on it. However I still have MvC2 for PS2 and that’s the version I still play. Love it!

You can also play the arcade version of MVC2 with a Dreamcast controller, as well as plugging in your VMU and saving your progress.

The reason why DC will always be perfect is cuz the DC hardware is literally a sega Naomi arcade board for the home, so when capcom brought there Naomi title MVC2 to the sega dreamcast it was running on the DC arcade perfectly ❤️😁💯 That’s why all the Naomi titles that made it to the DC were all Naomi board arcade perfect ❤️

Facts! PS2 version is by far the worst. XBOX does okay, but suffers from bad audio quality. 360 version nails it but minor frame cuts are noticeable. PS3 version is damn near perfect with no frame cuts at all. But what still keeps Dreamcast in 1st place for me is the ship level, and the clock tower level. The weather on the ship level clears up on the Dreamcast. A shadow of the blimp that fly's over is perfectly displayed on the clock tower level on the Dreamcast as well. All other versions DO NOT HAVE THIS!! I've owned and played all versions of this game so I know. I still have the 360 version.

Lmao what makes me laugh is I still to this day get people telling me that the dreamcast is still not Sega Naomi board perfect LOL, and I keep telling them Sega literally was building the Sega Dreamcast right next to the sega Naomi arcade board, so whatever graphics and sound chips they put into the sega Naomi they would put DIRECTLY into the sega dreamcast hardware, THUS making the Dreamcast an exact replica of the sega Naomi arcade hardware, so Naomi to dreamcast conversions were absolutely 💯% arcade perfect

The Naomi and Dreamcast share similar hardware but the Dreamcast was weaker comparatively. It had great ports but they weren't without their shortcomings compared to the arcade versions. segaretro.org/Sega_NAOMI

@@SuperKillerdreams From my experience, Naomi and Dreamcast do slightly differ, but not by much though. The positioning of the character selection is completely different. The music and the looping is slightly different as well. And last but not least, Naomi has slightly different artwork for the ending credits.

HOTD 2 actually does look a bit of a mess when i've seen the arcade version. Textures don't have any filtering, but the bonus port on Xbox restored that issue.

I have the game for Dreamcast, PS2, and Xbox. I like the Dreamcast version the best. When I first got the other versions, I did notice some little differences in sound without actually doing a side by side comparison. That being said, while I do think the Dreamcast version is the best, neither of the other versions are terrible by any means. They are still pretty close overall, and you can't really go wrong with any of them.

Just to add: The Sega Dreamcast Version has the IAs of Hulk And Jin like in MVC1 (thing that XBOX version hasn't), and the EXP LV rises, to rise the difficult of the game.

MVC2 is great on both systems (and the PS2). Kinda peeved with the PS3 version as they took out the awesome intro of the Vanilla version. If they are gonna re-release it on current gen systems, hopefully they re-insert the original intro. Or just emulate the arcade version.

Get the Brook Wingman XB along with an xbox usb adapter cable and you can use any compatible arcade sticks and controllers on the system.

The Dreamcast version of marvel vs Capcom 2 is a masterpiece in my opinion... What I like so much better about the Dreamcast version is the color palette looks a little better and the transparencies look much better so the game pops in a way that the Xbox version doesn't... The transparencies and color palette on the Xbox version looked so muted and I don't care what anyone says there's no way to spin that into being a good thing... You can always adjust your display to mute the color but you can't add color information that was never there to begin with...

I never played the XBox version of this game, but I do played the PS2 and Dreamcast versions, the contrast and colors looks better on Dreamcast. I also could see the fall of frame rate on PS2 is worse than Dreamcast. It's a pity I can't see the original Arcade version of this game anymore. Perhaps if I buy the Arcade board. @@ArchadesGames They probably mean the contrast you mentioned. The games are exactly the same other than what you mentioned with contrast and sound. I'm not sure where you hear the Xbox version is the worst, back in the day I always heard the PS2 version was the worst version with slowdowns during supers and missing frames of animation and claims of more pixelated sprites, but I have not played it so could be BS. I have the DC and Xbox versions, the audio doesn't bother me on Xbox, especially if you're playing it through a good audio receiver with some quality speakers. I like the brighter colors on the DC personally though and wins just out of nostalgia.

Marvel vs Capcom 2 was made first for the Sega Naomi arcade platform and the Dreamcast hardware has the same chipset as the Sega Naomi with graphics memory cut in half. So Dreamcast runs the game natively the way it was made and Xbox is a port of the game. That's why the Dreamcast version looks better. Crazy Taxi was a Naomi game too.

I do not know if they have the option to change the aspect ratio but when I saw it on XBOX 360 I did not like that it was on wide screen, I clarify that I only saw it, I did not play it since it passed through an arcade room where they rented them for time.

I got the Dreamcast version day one i believe and still got it. I remember i traded in like 5 games for a brand new MVC2 because i was broke at the time, wanted it bad and too impatient to wait to when i get the money to be able to buy it. I just went to the game store and there it was. The thing about MVC 2 is that i had no idea when it was scheduled to be released for the Dreamcast. If i did, i would have made sure i had the money day one to be able to buy it. And i`m glad i never sold it or traded it, because its expensive now.

Like yourself, I have both versions of MvC2 and I agree with you 100% and I did my own comparison back in the day and found the results to come to the same conclusion. The Xbox version is actually really good. I think the reason why the sound came out as low as it did was may have been due to audio compression being used in order to implement Dolby Digital into the game which Xbox managed to implement in quite a lot of games even back then.

To be honest the only thing that was wrong with the PS2 version was the sound effects for a couple of things being bad such as the hit sounds. Pretty sure the Xbox version doesn't have that issue. The sounds on Xbox is just at a lower volume but they are still correct.

What you point out regarding save areas actually is the same for the arcade version. I remember getting the DC version and thinking somehow the screen got smaller. Actually the Xbox version looks closer to the arcade version in that respect

Just wondering why the Dreamcast version would looker better than the Xbox version. I would imagine the Xbox would be better being that it can be set to 480p while the Dreamcast only has 480i capability. From personal experience my Xbox games are easier on the eyes then my Dreamcast when I play them on current TVs. Am I doing something wrong?

At a glance there doesn't seem to be a big difference. But if you play this game at a high level, MVC2 on XBOX is an entirely different game. As someone who played competitive MVC2 at the time when both the XBOX and PS2 version were released, there are some huge differences. PS2 does have insane frame drops, and tons of combos are different or just don't work. XBOX also has the same issue due to smaller sprites. Smaller sprites = smaller hit/hurtbox. It throws everything off. As a purely casual experience, it shouldn't be a big deal. But if you're a hardcore or competitive game, XBOX and PS2 version are basically unplayable.

Dreamcast port was Arcade perfect because the Arcade was made from Naomi hardware, its a Dreamcast ware with more RAM. Other versions like the PS2 and Xbox are just inferior. I owned all the versions.

It's actually a horrible version. I had a friend who had this version. We use to play it all of the time. Both of us also played the arcade version pretty regularly, and we both competed in tournaments. There is a lot of stuff that simply doesn't work in the PS2 version. And the character sprites are really bad really messing the game up. If you don't play competitively, you may not notice much of a difference. But the frame drops and hit detection is very bad on the PS2 version.
