Marvel vs Capcom Infinite: 7+ Years Later

Ahh, Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite. You either know it for its fun gameplay and varied character roster, or for its shitty graphics and that one picture of Chun-Li's face from back in the day.
I'm a die-hard Marvel vs Capcom fan, and while I like Infinite, it's far from being one of my favourite fighting games. I was super excited to play the game before it released in late 2017, but it didn't live up to my (or the wider FGC's) expectations, unfortunately.
However, as many years have passed since this game has been released, I thought it'd be a good idea to revisit the game and see what I think about it after not having played it for a short while...

That's actually a popular misconception. The only Marvel stuff Disney have any real direct involvement in is the movies, they tend to be pretty hands off (or more accurately ignore and leave to rot) everything else.

Nope. It was all 100% Marvel on the business side. When it comes to the MVC series, Marvel also has really strict rules on how Capcom depicts their characters, like Dr. Strange in MvC3. MVCI is kind of fascinating because I think it symbolizes everything wrong with both Marvel and Capcom at the time. Capcom had a tarnished reputation and RE7 was just released prior that year which wound up saving the company. Marvel was pouring everything into promoting the films while virtually disregarding everything else. Sure, Disney didn’t own the X-Men or FF on the Hollywood side of things but Marvel still held executive control over every other element and they decided to blow them off.

honestly the capcom side of the roster isnt much better. monster hunter is interesting i guess, but mvc2 had characters like tron bonne , bb hood, hayato, and roll. mvci's capcom side is almost entirely the most boring "guy on the front of the box" picks from every series. megaman is exclusively x series characters (and maybe this is just me, but is anyone really that into Sigma?) street fighter somehow only has two characters and it's ryu and chun. akuma isn't in the game! akuma! that's like, the bare minimum lol. resident evil is chris and nemesis? chris?? i get he's from the first game but he's gotta be like, the third most popular RE protag at best, and nemesis is Nothing. not to mention spencer from the crap reboot of bionic commando, who manages to look like they spent 40 seconds adding accessories to frank west's model somehow. disney absolutely had a big hand in making this game as frustrating as it was, but people often gloss over the completely peanut-brained decisions capcom made on their own. frankly if marvel is going to continue to be this tied up in red tape, i'd way rather see a new Capcom vs SNK than another mvc

In general, I feel Infinite’s sound design is all over the place and is never really consistent. A lot of the vocal performances of the characters (even if they’re not perfect) are trying to convey the bombastic energy of each fight, perhaps even moreso than Marvel 3 (lots of yelling/snarling; more visceral emotion, whereas 3 was more subdued). However, it comes off as somewhat hokey when paired with the game’s underwhelming OST (Jedah Dohma, Morrigan, Strider, Captain Marvel, and Rocket’s themes are pretty good though) and hit sound effects. The latter I feel is a lot more pressing since half the time it sounds oddly “clunky” than satisfying or impactful, if that makes sense. There’s a mod out there that replaces the hit sounds with classic SFX, and I feel that made things better.

From my understanding it wasn’t licensing issues that kept X-Men fantastic four from Marvel. It was just the fact that Marvel didn’t own the movie rights to the characters at the time so they didn’t want to promote characters that they couldn’t put on film. That’s why Marvel wasn’t really doing a lot with those characters in the comics as well.

It’s hard to say how well it’d perform given the competition at that point.

It’s probably because they all had some kind of issue with general audiences. MvCI bad the aforementioned graphics and lackluster story, X Tekken had a terrible monetization system and was generally considered bad until 2013, and Cross Tag had nonsensical balance and obviously wasn’t meant to appeal to fans of the the three fighting games originally represented. MVC1 was very popular during its time and that game was 2v2. Tatsunoko vs Capcom had a nice following as well

I think one overlooked detail I really like about MVC: Infinite is the greater focus on “teamwork” compared to the previous games. Characters actually interact with each other when certain pairings are picked on the character selection screen, and your partner will actually call out from off-screen (playing in the left/right audio channels as if they’re next to you) and express concern when you hit 25% HP or lower (“DANGER!”). Stuff like that might not seem like much in the grand scheme of things, but it’s something I really appreciate about this game for what it’s worth. Despite its shortcomings, Infinite will always hold a very special place in my heart.

Also by “calling from offscreen” in 3, are you referring to tag out/tag in? Looking back at footage from that game, there are no specific voice-lines from your teammates that play upon reaching low HP. I feel Infinite was the first to do that.

MVCI failed for the same reason SFIII did, Capcom removed all the popular characters alienating the audience. You can't make a sequel to a game, reset all the characters and expect success. Those past characters are the foundation on why the franchise is popular.

To the X-Men, this was the “lost decade”, when Marvel was pushing the Inhumans all over the place and the FF getting largely forgotten after Secret Wars 2015 in favour of promoting the MCU. It would be easy to blame Disney, but Marvel still had full control of their characters outside of Hollywood. They also have a lot of mandates when it comes to Capcom’s treatment of their characters which is really strict.

It wasn't a superhero fatigue, it was a garbage movie fatigue. They knew what they were doing when they mcu'd the roster and retconned Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver in the comics. A good roster can recover the backlash of a bad story and ugly looks. Even Street Figher V recovered eventually with the dlc and arcade mode.

But one thing, if this was made to ‘advertise’ the mcu more, why not just make the characters MCU? See, there's a problem with that line of logic: the entire point of the MvC flare they had going on was that there's Marvel throwing hands with Capcom. Had they went with the MCU route, game would have been in dire straits day 1, especially after people learn it's a MvC game and not a standalone fighting game like DC's Injustice.

Worst part of MvCI is that its a damn fun game, trapped in an ugly, low budget, and limited scope release that was forced on them by corporate mandates. Disney pretty much burned the bridge of working with Capcom again for VS titles; so here's hoping we can get some other Capcom VS whatever to fill the hole in our hearts. Or, just play the fan mods of MvC3. Either or works, I guess.

Another thing that I dislike about both Marvel Infinite and even Marvel 2 is the lack of character endings. While 3’s endings had their own issues, having unique endings for every character is a fantastic way to get you to play with other characters and experiment with them. You can have over 10-100 characters in your roster, and the lack of any endings, will kill any incentive for me to continue playing after the first arcade run.

They might have used the MvC3 models for MvCI as a base, but the MvCI models are clearly different with a much higher polygon count than MvC3 (the models were ripped by fans, and can be downloaded for free and analyzed in a model viewer like Blender)

The game had over 1 million sales... that should have told Capcom and Marvel something... We wanted the game... It was a good game... but shady business practices are what killed it on arrival. Also, I honestly believe Capcom messed up when they created 3 v 3 gameplay... it was nice that MVCI came back to the game's roots. If anything, if we ever get another MvC game, they should, and I am sure can easily, incorporate both 3v3 and 2v2 gameplay... If a player picks 3v3, they don't get active switch... and if they pick 2v2, they get active switch...

Marvel vs Capcom has always been a series that’s had an over-the-top presentation to celebrate the union of these two prominent properties. The decisions involving Infinite’s development made it suffer and result in something that did not match this high standard. Infinite is not a _bad_ game. But it’s not the blockbuster the other entries were either. As a result, this is the only MvC game that’s average at best.

What people need to understand is, the X-men and Fantastic Four CAN be used in video games without worry. Marvel sold the MOVIE rights to those franchises to other companies back in the 90s, but video games, they are all still allowed to appear in because the rights to use them in games are still in Disneys hands. Best example, Marvels Contest Of Champions, yes it’s a mobile game but still a video game. And as other KZbinrs pointed out, this game was data mined and the X-men were going to be in the game. Marvel just wanted to focus on MCU characters at the time, obviously a poor choice.

SEGA deserves a Capcom fighting crossover more. /lighthearted But seriously, Infinite is oh so fascinating in hindsight. Disney wiped out the X-Men because of MCU-related restrictions and a head-scratching obsession with "function inclusions" over "character inclusions", but at the same time, there's what was at least supposed to be a tighter version of Marvel Super Heroes' old Infinity Gem mechanics. It fell short not because it was bad, but because it was relatively weird compared to the highs of MVC2 and Ultimate MVC3.

Much like how ‘Street Fighter X Tekken’ had 12 fighters that were already finished when the game launched, but were left as on-disk DLC. But unlike ‘MvC:I’, 5 of the 12 fighters were already available in the previous game (Super Street Fighter IV) for free.

I could see one of two things 1. SF’s crossover scope goes from KoF level to NGBC level, everything but RE and Monster Hunter is incorporated into SF. 2. Capcom licenses their characters to other developers and publishers.

MvCi is such a tragic end to this fantastic crossover series, ruined by the dunderheaded disney manegement, Taking away comic style,the music, Ui & the X men (even though they had the rights! Fox only had the movie rights) the game does have its bright spots, the gameplay can get wild with the tagging + stones & the rollback netcode is smooth , But it was doomed from the start. Thanx for the revisit Khanage, hope it returns ( but meanwhile, we got great mods for mvc3)

This game had so much missed potential. Really wish we got more from this game such as more characters having those special level 3 like Cap and Bucky. Also many characters were missing from this game eg Leon should have replaced Chris, a game about using stones should have had Edward Falcon (Power Stone) and Asura. On the Marvel side they should have had characters like Loki

I like MvCI, but you can tell from what we're looking at it was a shoestring budget, the Marvel side has more new characters than rehash and better models to please their partners. If it ever comes back i would love to have this gameplay back, its probably the most fun and experimental gameplay they've ever done. But in my opinion i hope Disney somehow looses the Marvel license, it woule be so much better without them. Cause around the same year. Marvels Ultimate Alliance 3 was announced and that has MCU plus a dozen others that Capcom used and referenced before. Including voice actors who were in UMVC3 and not on infinite. Such a strange favoritism.

The fact budget and time were the main problems... If they had waited until after endgame, the RE engine would be in use for the character models, disney would have access to the xmen characters by that point, and capcom would have time to remake the models in the new graphical system. The fact most of the ideas and gameplay for the game work just fine but the presentation is so atrocious because its rushed when it could have been like, the most successful game, ever.

I feel like something overlooked is that Anime fighters don't have a good reputation. Like, before Dragon Ball Fighterz, Dragon Ball games had a reputation for being lousy aside from some dated and niche 90s titles, and the arena-styled Anime fighters to this day don't get a lot of respect. Fighterz is kind of an outlier, and it got a lot of publicity because "it's a fighting game based on an Anime that's ACTUALLY GOOD," as well as the memes about how it's so much better than MvC:I. I mean, remember how quickly Jump Force crashed after all the hype surrounding that game? I think that people thought that Fighterz would have suffered a similar fate, fans of the series liking it, FGC rejecting it.

I saw something a bit similar with people acting like Batman and Spidey only got great games recently (not many people but enough to note). Dragon Ball had good games in the 00s for fighting from Infinite World/Shin Budokai to Super DBZ to even Budokai Tenkachi 2 if you actually get into the movement. I grant that not every character would be very viable but coming off Marvel which didn't even give all characters Level 3s, it doesn't mean as much. Naruto had the Clash of Ninja series which was competitively sound if Storm isn't your thing. Bleach had 7 Heat the Souls games and Blade of Fate. Fate had FUC. There have been decent platform fighters like One Piece Gigant Battle and Jump Superstars. Even arena fighters could be pretty good from Zoids Wild Blast Unleashed to Gundam Vs which is just as old. Jump Force and some other titles definitely gave arena fighters a bad name, but we had options. FighterZ is just the only modern one which popped off and from what I can tell, Storm may not be as shallow as I think though I'm not expecting it to become the next Sonic the Fighters of misunderstood games.

Considering I grew up in the arcades with all the versus games, I actually preferred the active tag switch. The combo routes were so limitless they had to nerf a grip of characters right away(Ultron, Dante, Zero, Dormammu). Now if they had just chose a different art style something a little more focused on originality and added more characters we wanted, the game would've been a banger.

Mvci was ok. It’s not so bad. I love the character roster in this game (despite not having the x-men because of licensing issues). You get to use the Infinity stones, the story is ok & the graphics are amazing.

The death knell for Marvel vs Capcom Infinite was not carrying over everyone from Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3. In a game reusing some many animations, where the returning Capcom side is basically all just retextured models from three, everyone should have come back. I can get not adding more X-Men or Fantastic Four brand characters, (although Disney/Marvel was directly involved in X-Men shows like Legion and The Gifted at that point) it’s stupid, but I can get it, and I think by and large the audience would’ve been OK with it too; but not bring back the already finished characters from 3 was a bridge too far. There should’ve been a big pivot on that idea, especially given the overwhelming negative reaction to the leaked roster not having everyone. If Infinite had just been the 50 characters from UMVC3, plus 16 new characters (gotta have the two sides be even) and everyone got four costumes (every returning character [besides Magneto] could’ve just reused their two UMvC3 costumes) I don’t think the reaction to Infinite would’ve been anywhere close to as negative. There’s also just odd absences. Wesker is gone. My guess would be because Ant-Man was seemingly original meant to be in the game, and he would’ve been handled in a similar way to Wesker, but Ant-Man never made the game. MODOK is gone as a playable character despite still being in the game. Taskmaster, She-Hulk, Iron Fist, and Shuma-Gorath don’t return on the Marvel side; and this is despite Iron Fist having a show at the time that was technically part of the MCU, and everyone else showing up in MCU things that were in development as the game was being made. And Capcom loses a lot of characters, especially odd are the Street Fighter, Devil May Cry, and Resident Evil related ones. Also, Infinite has to be the worst timing for a deal ever. Disney buying Fox is announced the very year Infinite comes out, meaning all the stupid shit with Marvel and the Fox movie controlled characters would come to an end the same year Infinite was out.
