Black Panther #9 from Marvel Comics will be remembered or a very long time, for all the wrong reasons. John Ridley introduces The Colonialist villain and lost his mind in the process. Black Panther #9 is filled with on-the-nose social commentary, terrible dialogue and awful characterization. The Colonialist is one of the worst pieces of propaganda witnessed in comics in 2022. T'Challa doesn't sound or act like the character readers have known for almost 60 years. Marvel Comics writer John Ridley may have lost his mind.

Ridley has been trashing this book and the Black Panther character for MONTHS! This has been his LEAST offensive issue. From the outright disrespect of T’Challa,to his hinted “Bisexuality” a couple months ago. This book hasn’t been shit from day one.

Wow. This is the modern writer problem of writing a story and then making the character fit it, instead of writing a story that fits the character... And that Colonialist story is JUST AWFUL. Horrible way to do satire that is both on the nose and way off the mark at the same time.

Isn't it pretty insulting that all Black Panther seems to deal with now are racism-based stories. Like his entire reason for being now is just to fight racism, nothing else. It's like these woke (white) writers want to keep black people as perpetual victims by making them constantly relive past injustices over and over and over again, never moving on.

It's like John Ridley opened up the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe, looked at all the villains, and went "What am I supposed to do with this? Almost none of them are racist, why would they want to attack Wakanda, the richest and most powerful nation on Earth?" Hell, if you wanted to go the racist angle, replace the cringeworthy Colonialist with the Red Skull and you''d get a LOT more people interested in the book.

When I looked at the Alex Ross cover of Black Panther #9 with a pink construct look, I thought this story arc involved Black Panther's arch-nemesis, Ulysses Klaw. Boy, was I wrong. It's a shame. I thought John Ridley had something with the initial arc where a Monarch with the right to dissolve its government, voices impatience over the lack of productivity in a democracy. The Wakanda Parliament discovered it's Monarch has been secretly continuing black op cells monitoring all countries all over the world. All hell breaks loose because the government fears T'Challa might turn Wakanda into a dictatorship. After having read Ridley's I am Batman...and now Black Panther, I'm questioning his fame as a screenwriter. I'm wondering if he just writes the bare bones to a script and then someone else fills in dialogue. His comic book dialogue is problematic.

This John Ridley guy is a writer who is not a comic book writer. He is not a creator of comic book characters. He is a person who is obsessed with politics. If he feels that strongly about politics, especially civil rights and Constitutional law, then he shouldn't be writing super hero comics like the Black Panther from Marvel Comics. He should be teaching a class in a college, or working for some politician who has the same political views as he does, or he should be a civil rights activist protesting against the racial injustices that were brought upon all of the American citizens in his community who are not white. But what he shouldn't be doing is writing comic books. He is not a fan of comics, he doesn't like super hero characters, and he doesn't care about Marvel Comics in particular because his mind is focused on various other things that are going on elsewhere. He is no better than Ta-Nehisi Coates. All of his comic book stories are written like bitter essays from a University professor with a chip on his shoulder. He is better off being a Black Lives Matter! advocate than doing what he's doing now.

If you don't get that sense then you have not written the character correctly. As to The Colonialist pr whatever he is....I doubt Ridley really did any hard research into colonialism and it's effects within history. It's just gonna be bad white people came and bad things to people of color. Which is not the complete actuality of its history. And I wouldn't doubt they did not plot this series out beyond so many issues, in case the numbers weren't there for it to continue. WTF20

You could honestly do a deconstruction of Colonialism in the world of Black Panther without resorting to lazy satire like this. "The Colony" could be a band of refugees fleeing the forces of Thanos or the Kree Empire, who hear about the protection that Earth offers and decide to settle down there. An advance group builds a fort near Wakanda because A) it's isolated from the larger population of humanity, and B) Wakanda's culture and advanced technology makes them appear more enlightened and accepting than the Russians or Americans (hence why they teleported onto Earth to avoid detection from SWORD or other agencies). They try to approach Black Panther for his blessing to stay in their land, stressing that the remainder of their people is living on borrowed time, and that their enemies are searching to pick them off. Unfortunately, the "needs" of the Colony trump respect for Earth itself, so they start mining for energy resources, hunt African animals for food with their advanced weaponry, and injure other Africans while trying to scare them away- making it clear that although they claim to want coexistence, they won't remain that way for long. T'Challa then has to marshal his forces to stop the Colony from building a space bridge and summoning the rest of their displaced army to Wakanda, but doing so would doom the rest of those aliens to die at the hands of the Kree or space pirates. Maybe T'Challa or Shuri could find a third solution that satisfies both parties (like exiling them to the Negative Zone or hooking them up with the Eternals), or they'll have to destroy the Colony and doom their kind to extinction.

A science-fiction story like that is way too intelligent for DC Comics or Marvel Comics. You are better off making your own independent comic book company, and making your own independent comic book about a sci-fi universe with various super-hero characters that tackles that subject and uses a similar way to metaphorically tell the story. A good graphic novel about it would be cool. But "mainstream" comics are way too stupid to ever write something that clever. They actually think that they are brilliant, writing on the nose bullshit like that Black Panther comic book written by John Ridley with the alien character called the Colonialist.

I’ve liked all the Black Panthers so far. I didn’t have a problem with the Colonialist, it’s weird af, but I’m into weird. The Cap BP convo was the most upsetting part to me.

Oh hell no. Like, Black panther is a title that can totally explore colonialism, but leave the on-the-nose parody to a title aimed at that audience, if you please.

Can anyone explain why colonization is bad without sounding like a child? Colonization is good because it's the strong replacing the weak. That's how nature and life works. Might makes right and weakness will be punished. Since natives were too weak to keep their land, they didn't deserve keep it.

It sucks for the losing side. I don’t agree with invading and war and genocide, but you def gotta be able to protect your shit. Life can be horrific. It sucks that good people have to protect themselves against those not so good but that’s how it is. And speaking of Native Americans, weren’t they killing each other and taking over each other’s land as well? Why is that so different than when the whites did it?

@@largefactory some people believe the natives all lived in harmony and never engaged in war until white people showed them how. Someone told me a native told them that and I immediately thought it was bull.

@@aballofgrime7273 - I guess white folk taught them how to scalp people too. They’re humans, and humans kill each other.

Great video Wes as always. Maybe we need to wait for this storyline to develop. Nothing you showed in your video put me off the book. It doesn't look bad, it looks unfinished. I am curious as to how a comic book or tv show is supposed to tackle racism towards black people specifically without using Mutants as an analogy. People complained about Captain America The Truth when it came out. People complained about the Blue Marvel mini series and it still hasn't been reprinted. People complained about the Doctor Who story 'Rosa' {which was the only decent episode of the new Doctor Who show}. How should it be done to be acceptable to everyone????????????? I really want to know and see an example that makes everyone happy.

I thought the Deep Space 9 episode “Far Beyond the Stars” did a good job with this. Captain Sisko is trapped within a vision wherein he is a struggling science fiction writer in New York in 1953, dealing with persecution and naysayers because of his race. The episode is, on paper, far more blunt about racism that many CW shows, yet it works beautifully because the racism itself is actually a metaphor. The writers of the episode used a real-world issue as an allegory for Sisko’s personal struggles, rather than the other way around, and thus managed to put a spotlight in that issue without the audience being preached to. (This also got a nice payoff in a later season, where Sisko, being one of the few people in the 24th Century who can claim to truly understand racial discrimination, is reluctant to use a holodeck program set in a time and place where black people were persecuted.)

@@colebuckon3856 That is one of my favorite Star Trek episodes of all time and that is one of the few {or only} tv episode about racism that show the psychological consequences. I will have to rewatch it and reread the Steven Barnes novel of the episode. I agree it is an amazing episode but I believe if it came out today in the current climate anti woke people would hate it. That is my opinion. DS9 never had the high ratings of STTNG so they could be more experimental on that show. Benny Russel didn't get a happy ending.
