Marvin , I was there at Wembley, London , when you beat our man Alan Minter. I’m sorry that you were not given the respect that you were due that night. It was not personal at all but many were caught up in the highly charged atmosphere of the occasion. Which is no excuse but is the truth. Many of those same people , I’m sure, went on to admire and respect you for the great fighter and man , that you have proved to be. Thank you sir , for the fantastic memories.

@@tomulator It wasn't that he lost it was the way it was accomplished. Hagler didn't lose he was robbed. Yes Ray fought a masterful fight enough to win a normal 10 or 12 round non title fight. However he DID NOT DO ENOUGH TO TAKE A CHAMPIONS TITLE. The same way Norton was robbed in 76 against Ali, like De la Hoya was gifted a couple decisions. All three of these men had star appeal outside the ring to the casual observer. This is why most hard core fight fans dislike the Leonard's and Ali's of the world. They get to a point where they CAN'T lose because it would hurt the sport. Oh Hagler has always shown more class than SRL and he wasn't a coke head like Leonard became later . Go watch Ray's second fight with Hearns....another classic robbery.

@Timeoftroubles I have to agree,thing's changed after that fight.I think Ray was a great fighter but to my eye's Hagler was from another time.Old school had some rules to it.like when you fight the champ you have to clearly beat him to take the belt.Miss the saturday aft. fight's that used to be common.Sanchez was like a rock star to me,i was 14 when he died.Shocked me.Very nice to hear from you,i hope your day is as good as your memories.

One of the very best ever. I feel that Marvin gave away the 1st 4 rounds to Ray in their match cuz he started slow. It might have cost him the close victory. Deep in my heart, Marvin still won that fight. Ray always had this uncanny ability to impress judges when needed. The decision frustrates me till this day.

Hagler's hatred of Sugar Ray goes back to when Sugar Ray had Hagler fly down to Washington D.C. for a big announcement he was going to make. MMH the golden initials I still remember from a glorious era of true boxing. Mr Hagler the Man who destroyed dreams of many national Heroes . He destroyed my Hero. The second best welterweight champion of the 70s ( The electric elusive Hamani) whom even the legendary Carlos Monzon described as a ghost in the ring he even couldn't lay his hands on him for Six rounds of sparing in south France. Wrong time wrong place for my Hero to face the American Dark destroyer. Hamani stayed inactive for several years grew older then had to make his fatal "voyage" to Portland "wishful thinking" to get passed the iron wall of Mr Marvelous Marvin Hagler! At 31 poor training no fights for years prior to the D day, My hero was thrown out of the ring in the 2nd! The entire nation( Algeria) was in shock. My generation never saw him knocked out before. Ever since I followed the Marvelous till his last fight with the Handsome Leonard. Leonard as his nickname goes of Sugar was definitely sweet to watch. His lightening hands and feet are simply a blessing from Heaven, no boxer in history can be compared to. Yet in that fight, although fabulous show throughout the night, no way he had won it. At best we talk of a draw. Having said that. Mr Sugar Ray Leonard proved his tactics worked against the monster although past his prime. Very smart hit and run all night and never knocked down which we all expected. I love both men. But something in me feels more for my Marvelous Marvin Hagler the best and the beast of all time and a man full of pride and manhood ! Wish you the very best and long peaceful life. Still your fan.

My question is... Do YOU have what it takes to endure the pain and hours of sacrifice to train hundreds of hours in a sweltering hot gym or on the road? Do YOU know the feeling of emptiness when you train so hard and feel nobody understands the sweat, and blood that pours from your body? Though they see it....... Have some respect

Hagler won the fight, SRL won the decision. Not the first bad decision in boxing but one of the few that allowed a guy to take the title backing away and running.

Thing is Leonard stipulated a 12 round fight cos he knew Marvin had a great engine and in fact Leonard started tiring after 9 round. What's annoys me is why did hagler give in to Leonards demands and lower rounds from 15 to 12? Leonard played him like a fiddle.leonard was like may weather. Both made money and press loved them and both timed their opponents. Leaves a sour taste for me. Especially when Leonard refused hagler a rematch. He waited for hagler to age as did may weather v pacman

I believe it was a money thing - Marvin conceded too much to get the purse he wanted - bad negotiating by his agents - also he never should have given away the first 4 rounds by switching to right hand - stay southpaw and I think the gloves were also an issue that was negotiated favoring Leonard -
@mskidi
@mskidi 3 жыл бұрын
@@jimclancy6715 The whole orthodox in the 4 rounds thing is blown out of proportion, a myth mostly like Ali beating Foreman because of rope a dope. You watch the fight, he switched from orthodox to southpaw and fought in the latter stance for about half, or even more, of each one of those first rounds. And fighting southpaw he remained passive and reactive to Leonard, too cool for school type of fighting. Either he was past it or his gameplan was wrong (he might have thought Leonard would gass out from all that running around) or it wasnt a good night or Leonard put up a better fight than he thought or all of the above and then some. I mean, even when he had Leonard cornered, it didnt look like he was trying to knock him out, he was punching him like going by the numbers. As far as I am concerned a draw would have been the fair result, but even in a smaller ring, fighting southpaw from the get go, smaller gloves and all, the way he came out to fight, wouldnt have made any difference.

Mike Trainor outmaneuvered the Petronelli brothers. To get the money they agreed to a 12 round instead of a 15 round fight. First mistake. A larger ring. Second mistake. Using gloves with a partially attached thumb. Third mistake and fatal one. Hagler never fought with that kind of glove plus Goody and Pat didn't have Hagler use that glove while training and sparring. It threw his whole rythm off. Lest we forget location, location, location. In Vegas everyone knows how it goes there ask Larry Holmes and Tommy Hearns. Had Hagler demanded a 15 round fight there would have been no fight. Remember the WBA and IBF stripped Hagler before the fight. Its ridiculous that the fight was sanctioned. Leonard only fought twice after the first Hearns fight he was not a ranked contender at all,and hadn't fought in nearly three years. Its funny because he won 2 more titles by fighting Donny La Londe ,super middle and light heavyweight. He should have never been given a shot when he wasn't even ranked and had relinquished the middle title, never once defending it because he didn't want a rematch with Hagler.
